Dispersed sites along Forest Road 9350 place campers directly on the edge of the Mogollon Rim, where some spots sit right at the cliff's edge without barriers. The campground stretches along a dirt road through ponderosa pines, with numbered sites offering varying levels of privacy and rim access.
Half the sites face the dramatic drop-off, providing expansive views into the forest below. Jacob W. notes the "drop off the rim is significant enough that I give it Jacobs survival rate of ZERO percent," making rim-side spots unsuitable for pets or young children. Sites on the opposite side of the road offer more safety but sacrifice the views. The campground operates first-come, first-serve, and competition for rim-side spots can be intense during peak seasons.
Most sites include fire rings, though picnic tables aren't guaranteed at every spot. The road surface varies from well-maintained sections to washboard areas with deep ruts, particularly at sites farther from the entrance. Cell service reaches most areas, and two vault toilets serve the campground near the entrance. A camp host presence adds security during busy periods.
Weather changes rapidly at this elevation, with sudden downpours and hail possible even on clear days. The dusty conditions can trigger allergies, and headlamps become essential for nighttime navigation near the rim. Woods Canyon Lake sits 10 minutes away by vehicle, offering boat rentals, fishing, and water access. Nearby hiking trails include connections to the Drew Trail and Highline Trail system.
Campers seeking alternatives without rim exposure can explore campgrounds around Kohls Ranch for different terrain options.
