Forest Road 195 Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Sitgreaves National Forest manages Forest Road 195 Campground, a dispersed area in Forest Lakes, Arizona, where sites are spread along both sides of FR 195 at varying sizes. The setup accommodates a range of rigs. As David Y. puts it, "sites are of different sizes, anyone can camp, big trailers etc." That flexibility makes it a reasonable match for campers pulling larger trailers, though the roads branching off the main forest road are notably rough and better suited to trucks with good clearance than to low-clearance vehicles.

Cell coverage is essentially nonexistent through much of this corridor. Visitors on AT&T or Cricket networks report losing signal leaving Payson and not regaining it in the dispersed areas, so downloading offline maps before departure is a practical necessity. The area fills up, and on busy summer weekends both sides of FR 195 have been found without a single open site, so arriving early or planning for a weekday stay matters. Those who do secure a spot find the surroundings quiet aside from birds and ambient forest sounds.

Campfires and pets are permitted, and alcohol is allowed on site. Nearby options for those exploring the broader corridor include Fr 195 Campground to the northeast and Carr Lake Campground on Forest Road 9350 to the west. Campers who come prepared with offline navigation, a capable vehicle, and a flexible schedule will get the most out of what this remote stretch of Sitgreaves has to give.

Many campers appreciated the spacious, secluded sites and peaceful natural setting. Access requires high-clearance vehicles due to rough roads, and cell service is very limited throughout the area.

Nice Large Spot

Wanted to get out of the heat of Phoenix so came up. Our spot had some trees but our RV was mostly in the sun. Far enough off the road. Not too dusty. Spots allowed no more than 20 people. They are very big. Camp host was very nice. About 22 degrees cooler here than Phoenix.

Nice site but fills VERY quickly.

We tried this site but it was full in both dides of 195. Not a site to be found. The roads off the main are VERY rough. In our Santa Cruz we had ti go very slow and careful. Better suited fir larger trucks with ample clearance. Cell services leaving Payson for ATT/Cricket was NONEXISTENT for most of the way, especially up in the dispersed areas. Use offline maps, don't rely on internet access if you have Cricket!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is FR 195 Campground located and how do I access it?

Forest Road 195 Campground is located off the beaten path in a remote, secluded area near Payson. Access requires traveling on FR 195, which branches off from the main road. Be aware that the roads leading to the campground, especially side roads off the main FR 195, are very rough and require careful driving. Vehicles with higher clearance like trucks are better suited for navigating these roads, while lower clearance vehicles will need to proceed very slowly and carefully.

What amenities are available at FR 195 Campground?

FR 195 Campground offers a primitive camping experience with minimal amenities. The campground provides spacious, quiet sites surrounded by nature. Don't expect facilities like running water, electric hookups, or restrooms. This is a natural setting where you'll enjoy solitude, wildlife, and bird watching. Cell service is very limited, with Verizon reported to have almost no coverage and AT&T/Cricket having no service when traveling from Payson. Come prepared with all necessary supplies.

Do I need a reservation for FR 195 Campground or is it first-come, first-served?

FR 195 Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. The campground can fill up, particularly on both sides of FR 195, so arriving early is recommended, especially during peak camping seasons. If you find the main sites occupied, be aware that exploring alternative spots on side roads may be difficult due to very rough terrain. Plan accordingly and have backup options in case the campground is full when you arrive.

Is FR 195 Campground suitable for RVs or is it better for tent camping?

FR 195 Campground can accommodate various camping setups, including larger trailers and RVs. The sites vary in size, allowing for different vehicle types. However, access is the main consideration – the rough roads leading to the campground may be challenging for RVs and trailers, especially those with low clearance. Larger trucks pulling trailers will have an easier time navigating the terrain. Once at the campground, there's adequate space for different camping styles, but getting there requires careful driving and appropriate vehicles.
