Halfway between Mineral Point and New Glarus in southwestern Wisconsin, Yellowstone Lake State Park sits on a man-made lake in open, hilly terrain that draws paddlers, anglers, and hikers from the Madison area on weekends. The campground occupies a hillside above the main beach and boat launch, accessible via a long, steep grade that RVs and trailers should approach with care. Sites are spread across the slope, and several are bi-level, meaning the parking pad sits one or two steps above the actual tent or camping area. Campers booking online should review site photos before reserving, especially if they need level ground for an RV or a flat surface for tents.
What the campground does well is separation between sites. "Trees and bushes block line of sight to the other campsites," notes Kevin M., though sound carries across the hill when the park fills up. Site 60 draws praise for its proximity to the water and relative privacy despite being a double site. Walk-in tent sites sit higher on the hill and overlook the lake. Cell service is limited throughout the park, which some visitors consider a plus.
The lake gives campers three boat launches, a kayak ramp, and a fishing pier. At a maximum depth of 14 feet, the water is shallow and not particularly clear, but it paddles easily and sees consistent fishing activity. A designated off-leash dog beach and a separate swimming beach add to the draw. Trails, including the Wildlife Loop, branch off directly from the campground. Kevin M. called it "a definite highlight," noting deer, frogs, and birds on a single outing.
One shower building serves the entire campground, and it sits on the opposite side of the park from some sites, so the walk can be longer than expected. Water throughout the park has a mild iron taste. Fire grates vary in condition across sites. Full hookups, including electric, water, and sewer, are available for RVs up to 60 feet, though some RV sites run narrow and may limit awning use. Reservations are accepted and recommended for summer weekends. The Yellowstone Lake Chalet Campground operates nearby as a private alternative, and campgrounds around Yellowstone Lake State Park include additional options in the region. The park runs from April through November and suits campers who want lake access and hiking trails without driving far from south-central Wisconsin.
Description
One of a few lakes in southwestern Wisconsin, 450-acre Yellowstone Lake is a popular year-round recreation area that offers visitors ample space to enjoy camping, swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, biking and picnicking. In winter the park is open to ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. A large family campground and group camp are just a short walk from the beach and boat landing.
