I should selfishly say this is a terrible campground with terrible sites and unfriendly host so that it might detour campers from this fantastic area. However, it would be a complete lie.
Tight sites with some rowdy neighbors. Nice place to go with friends for a local weekend getaway. Not too far from Red River Gorge for more hiking and beautiful KY scenery.
Mix of tent and RV pull-thru sites. No privacy between sites. No air movement in September, so prepare for stagnation. Right on the Bourbon Trail just outside Bardstown, KY.
Get cozy with your very close neighbor campers. Little or no tree cover and tight sites make it good for camping with friends or making new ones. Sites on the shoreline are great for fishing (although shallow and weedy) or boating in.
Typical campground, but the best part is proximity to nearby creek for seasonal kayak rentals. Remember that out of state residents must pay to enter the park.
Deep and narrow drive-in sites for tents or campers are surrounded by thick woods and brush. Bring mosquito repellent! Stop by the park office if you have kids so they can receive a junior ranger activity kit, or just view photos of lunkers and trophy pike caught in the lake, which does offer boat rentals.
Fairly spacious tent camping sites and well manicured. Most of the sites border wooded areas, so they are in the open. Great access to the hiking trails, and the nice lodge for those who may want to check-in to a room or enjoy the indoor pool.
Imagine a giant parking lot with trees. That’s your campground. RV and tent camping are mixed. Restrooms were rough, but useable, when you’re done waiting.
A suitable local choice for camping if you desire more trees surrounding your site. There are a few very short hike-in primitive sites for extra seclusion.
The sites always fill up fast and campers are mix of RV’s with lights, generators and noise as well as tents. Neither camper types who venture here are looking for peace and quiet. Some newer primitive hike-in or boat-in sites are on the muddy lake shores, but are mostly secluded. Also heavily used by local Boy and Girl Scouts.
Stayed in the Roaring Fork area waaaay in the back of this campground. Surrounded by mountains and right on the lake shore made this a great location. You can hear the Roaring Fork gushing nearby. Thankfully the site neighbors were quiet and courteous, because there is no privacy. Lots of fat little chipmunks!
I hate to spoil this place with a great review, knowing it will make it more difficult to book here in the future. However, this may be the most thoughtful, scenic, and clean campground I’ve ever visited. With fresh, cold and clean mountain water for drinking!
