Oakwood Lakes State Park's Campground 2 sits within the Oakwood Lakes Recreation Area in eastern South Dakota, managed by SD State Parks and Recreation. The campground features a mix of mowed, open grassy sites and tree-lined spots, giving campers some choice in how much shade and privacy they want. Sites are large, each with a fire pit and picnic table, and the area accommodates RVs up to 80 feet with electric hookups available.
Water access is a consistent draw here. A walking path circles the lake and works well for dog walks or stretching legs after a long drive. The broader park includes a swimming beach, multiple boat launches, a handicap-accessible fishing dock, and horse trails, so there's a range of activity options beyond the campsite itself. Families with kids tend to find the playground and the historic Mortimer's cabin worth a visit. Bathrooms are modern and clean, with hot showers on-site.
Mark L. sums up the layout well: "Big mowed lots, trees or open spaces if you want." Nightly rates run $26 to $55, reservations are available, and pets are permitted. The Horse Campground at Oakwood Lakes State Park sits just 0.2 miles north for equestrian campers, and Campground 1 at Oakwood Lakes State Park is 0.5 miles north as another option within the same park. Campground 2 works well for families, RV travelers, and anyone wanting reliable amenities alongside lake access in eastern South Dakota.
Description
Shaded campgrounds and picnic areas complement the park's excellent swimming and boating facilities. The park was once used as a summer camp and an annual gathering spot for American Indians. Later, Samuel Mortimer arrived in 1869 and built the log cabin that still stands at the park.
