    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Mineral Springs campground and Turkey Hole offer dispersed camping sites directly along the Klickitat River, accommodating both tent campers and RVs traveling with pets. Both locations maintain pit toilets and fire rings at established sites, though campers should bring their own water. At Mineral Springs, the riverside sites provide enough separation between campers to minimize noise from other groups, including those running generators. The campground features a dirt boat ramp primarily serving fishermen. Turkey Hole similarly offers riverside spots, though they are limited to about four prime waterfront locations. Some campers note the presence of long-term residents at both locations despite the 14-day limit policy.

Leidl South Campground provides additional pet-friendly dispersed camping options on Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife land, requiring only a Discover Pass. The campground stretches larger than it initially appears, with numerous spots situated right beside the river, though the water can run swift during spring months. Roots Rise Family Farm offers a more developed alternative with ten designated camping sites, picnic tables, fire rings, and amenities including drinking water, showers, and toilets. The farm features an open field with play equipment for children alongside a section with pine trees providing partial shade. The property layout allows campers to spread out comfortably even when multiple groups are present, creating a peaceful environment for stargazing at night.

Lone Tree Campground — Cottonwood Canyon State Park

Clean, beautiful, quiet, relaxing, family friendly

First come first serve sites with fire rings. There is overflow camping in the lawn without a fire ring but with a picnic table. Restrooms are very clean and campground is well maintained. Winds can pick up in the canyon so be sure to have strong tent stakes. Right next to the John Day River great walking path along the River. Fenced dog park for your pet and free bicycles for use.

      Mineral Springs

Free campsite along the Klickitat RIver

Nice Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife campground with a dirt boat ramp, seems to serve mostly fishermen. Some sites are right next to the Klickitat River. Some have easy access for larger rigs and space for boat trailers. The campground is right next to SR 142, but it's not really a very busy highway. The Klickitat Trail for mountain biking and hiking is nearby.

We stayed for two nights mid-week in September. The river sites are in sight of each other but not too tightly packed. It did seem that some of those sites were occupied by some long-term residents, although you're not supposed to occupy spots for more than 14 days out of 30. One site ran their generator constantly, so we set up on the other side of the old Icehouse structure right next to the river, where the river noise covered up the generator noise. We had a quiet pleasant stay.

Peach Beach RV Park on the Columbia

      Beautiful, serene location.

Stayed here on a job for at least some 6 months, absolutely loved it. The hostess was very friendly, the adjoining small state park I believe it is is very convenient for pet owners, and the location is overall gorgeous.

Lone Tree Campground — Cottonwood Canyon State Park

      Quiet, serene, oasis

This beautiful campground was loaded with amenities. The gorgeous John Day River, was perfect for fishing, swimming, floating. There was several trails within the campground as well as trailheads around the perimeter. We brought our own bikes but if you don’t bring yours, they offered loaner bikes and there were little bike workstations on the grounds. Pet friendly! Including a fenced in dog area (about an acre) and doggie poo bags readily available. We have a truck with camper but the tent sites each had a solar panel to provide electricity for charging the essentials. The grounds must have been a farm originally and the campground designers did an awesome job of using the existing structures to add to the rustic nature and maintain the land’s historic relevance. Cottonwood Canyon surpassed our expectations, especially considering the very low price tag. I cannot recommend highly enough.

      Leidl South Campground

Convenient spot right on the Klickitat River

This is a really convenient place to camp if you're rafting the Klickitat. It's WA land, so all you need is a Discover Pass (although my friend didn't have one, and nobody came by to check). There's no other campground fee.

There aren't any designated spots campsites, but there are a number of fire rings and it's pretty easy to segregate yourself from other campers. The site was clean and the pit toilet wasn't too bad. The first weekend in June, there was only one other group camping there, so it was nice and quiet!

The location on the Klickitat is really pretty. The campground is right along the river facing a really impressive rock wall. You can sleep to the sound of the water :)

I also stayed here a year ago with a big group, and it worked out great for that.

      Mineral Springs

      Beautiful quiet riverside campground eound

Nice quiet campground right on the Klickitat river. The sites are nicely spread out with lots of surrounding trees, but not so many that you don't get the sunshine in. My spot was right along the river and had plenty of sun for solar and sky for starlink. Each site had a fire ring. There is a clean pit toilet. Was there on a Wed and Thurs night with about half of the sites open.

Use the coordinates to find it as there is no signage from the highway. I drove by it. Look for the cement building (in my photos) sitting in front of the river.

The drive in is spectacular with Mt Adams fully flanking the right side of the road and Mt Hood flanking the left.

Upper Campground — Beacon Rock State Park

      Nice campground near incredible rock

Beacon Rock is an incredible, tall hill in the Columbia River Gorge and a Washington State Park. The climb up the rock is through a well-built trail. It can get narrow at spots and not for those who fear heights. The view at the top, however, is amazing. Easy day-use area and there is also a popular campsite nearby with hiking trails.

Camp sites are kind of small, with most in forested areas. A few are slightly more exposed and some are split-level, in that you park up top and walk a few steps down to your camp site. Bathrooms and water on-site. It is close to Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington and very popular and busy.

    Guide to Klickitat

Dispersed camping near Klickitat offers riverside sites along the Klickitat River, nestled in an area where elevations range from 365 feet along the Columbia River to over 1,200 feet in the highlands. The region experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F and cool winters with occasional snow. Wind conditions can be significant throughout the gorge, particularly during spring and fall months.

    What to do

Fishing access points: Several camping areas provide direct river access for anglers. At Deschutes River State Recreation Area, the location serves as an excellent fishing base. As one visitor noted, "Beautiful river runs through the ground. Fishing is good. Boat launch on the opposite side of the campground."

Hiking trails: The Deschutes River State Recreation Area offers trail access directly from the campground. "The Deschutes River Trail leaves from the campground, and it's a nice 16-mile-long bike ride, though it can get a bit rough. This area can get very windy," explains one camper.

Swimming spots: During hot summer days, several riverside locations offer cooling opportunities. At Avery Recreation Area, campers appreciate the water access. "Great little swimming spot steps from our spot," reports one visitor who enjoyed their riverside location.

Stargazing: The clear skies and minimal light pollution make this region excellent for night sky viewing. Memaloose State Park provides elevated viewpoints. According to one camper, "THE VIEWS. No filters needed for your photos. Must catch a sunset!"

    What campers like

Scenic river views: The Columbia River and its tributaries create dramatic landscapes. At Memaloose State Park Campground, "Some sites have beautiful views of the Columbia Rive Gorge," a visitor reports. Another adds, "Our site had a beautiful view of the river."

Dog-friendly areas: Many campgrounds near Klickitat welcome pets. Tucker Park Campground provides good options for pet owners. "Dog friendly. Hot showers for $. Water available. Good recycling facilities," mentions one camper about the amenities that accommodate their four-legged companions.

Privacy between sites: Several campgrounds offer good separation between campsites. At Tucker Park Campground, "Our neighbors were friendly and the white noise from the water helped hide the proximity of our fellow campers," explains a visitor who appreciated the layout.

Boating access: Multiple locations feature boat ramps or river access points for watercraft. Avery Recreation Area includes "a boat ramp and a garbage dumpster on-site. Over half the 'sites' are right on the water," providing convenient launch points.

    What you should know

Train noise: Railroad tracks run through the gorge and impact several camping areas. At Deschutes River State Recreation Area, "Great park except for trains go by at night and blow their noisy, loud horns. Suggest camping at the back of the park," advises one visitor.

Wind conditions: The gorge creates a wind tunnel effect that can impact camping. One camper at Memaloose State Park warns, "Do not fall prey to a river view spot! There are no trees to provide shade or protection from the wind! There are burn marks on my tent from the polls rubbing together."

Seasonal insect issues: Some locations experience insect problems during certain times. A camper at Deschutes River State Recreation Area reported, "The major downfall was that our camp was infested with flies and earwigs which did not provide a good experience."

Bridge access challenges: The Hood River Bridge presents difficulties for larger vehicles. One RVer notes, "First off, if you have an RV and can avoid taking the Hood River Bridge, that is highly advisable. With two 9' lanes, it's a nightmare to get across."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Some locations offer dedicated play areas for children. At Roots Rise Family Farm, "There's a big field with play equipment for kids, and pine trees below, where we found a nice spot with half shade, picnic table, and fire ring," reports a family who enjoyed the setup.

Swimming safety: River currents vary seasonally and require caution. At Leidl South Campground, a visitor observed, "In March the river was pretty swift and the edge sort of steep so we stayed near the boat ramp because we didn't want our dogs to fall in. I've been there in late spring and summer and the river is not nearly as swift."

Campsite selection: For families with young children, choosing sites away from the river may be safer. Tucker Park has options: "We had a site with full hookups, it seemed the lower ones only had water, check the map and make sure you get what you need."

Host support: Campground hosts can provide assistance and sometimes extras. At Roots Rise Family Farm, "Amy the host sold farm fresh eggs and the most delicious muffins on Sunday morning! All in all the perfect weekend spot."

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full-service options exist at select locations. At Gorge Base Camp RV Park, "The park is paved in asphalt, and each site has grass that is well maintained. A bit pricey, but the full hook ups were worth it to us on 100 degree days!"

Site leveling: Some campgrounds provide level parking while others require work. At Peach Beach RV Park, "Easy enough to get to, lots of trees, picnic table, can see the Columbia River from your site. Sites are on the smaller size but our 43 ft 5th wheel fit just fine."

Loop selection: Different campground areas offer varying experiences. At Deschutes River State Recreation Area, "We stayed in the T loop in our truck camper, no hookups in this loop. But they have them in the A loop," advises a camper who explored the options.

Early arrival: The most desirable sites fill quickly, especially on weekends. A visitor to Tucker Park suggests, "Get there early and snag a spot down by the river," highlighting the importance of timing for securing premium locations at dog-friendly campgrounds near Klickitat.
