Water on two sides defines the layout at The Colonies RV and Travel Park, a small private campground occupying the far end of the Fort Monroe peninsula in Hampton, Virginia. The site sits on flat, grassy ground shaded by mature trees, with bay views in one direction and creek views in the other. Campers report being able to catch both sunrise and sunset from the same stay, depending on where they position themselves on the grounds.
The campground runs 22 sites in total, including one pull-through, 13 full hookup spots, and 12 tent sites. RVs are limited to 25 feet. Full hookups include 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer connections. Tent sites run around $30 per night without water or electric, while hookup rates reach up to $59. A country store on-site stocks reasonably priced supplies, laundry is available at low cost, and the bathhouse draws consistent praise for cleanliness. Fire pits are available to rent. The full hookup sites are named after the original 13 colonies, a nod to the historic character of the surrounding National Monument land.
A short walk from the sites leads to a small beach on the bay, where dogs can get into the water and anglers fish from the bank. The campground also has osprey nesting towers, and reviewers have noted watching birds hunt crabs near the bathhouse. One practical note: a beach club sits adjacent to the shoreline access. As James A. puts it, "Sunday nights are the loudest, but they quiet enough for bed time." Tent campers wanting more distance from noise should ask for sites 6 or 7. Wind exposure is also worth knowing about; the open, flat terrain gives little shelter, and at least one reviewer found the wind loud enough to disrupt sleep.
Fort Monroe itself has a Casement Museum, a boardwalk, and walking paths along the water. Nearby campgrounds include Home to the northwest and The Colonies Military to the south, and campers staging trips through the Hampton Roads region can find camp sites near Hampton as a reference for additional options in the corridor. Rates are higher in summer; a monthly winter rate applies from October through April for longer stays. Reservations are available and pets are welcome. Book early for summer weekends, and bring stakes designed for firm ground if you're tent camping in windier conditions.
