Tent campgrounds in the Narrows, Virginia region offer a mix of primitive tent campsites and sites with basic amenities. Camp Success provides tent camping directly along the New River with walk-in sites and vault toilets, while Walnut Flats Campground near Pearisburg offers more amenities including drinking water, picnic tables, and designated tent sites. Nearby Whitt Riverbend Park also accommodates tent campers with fire rings and basic facilities accessible through multiple entry points including boat-in options.
Most tent sites in the region have limited amenities and require campers to bring their own water or use hand pumps when available. The terrain at Walnut Flats Campground features compacted dirt pads that may require a hammer to secure tent stakes properly. Access to several backcountry tent areas requires driving on gravel roads that can become challenging after rainfall, with some requiring high clearance vehicles. Vault toilets are common at established sites, though maintenance varies seasonally. Most tent areas permit fires in designated rings, but campers should confirm current fire restrictions before arrival, particularly during summer drought conditions.
Tent campers seeking solitude can find quieter backcountry options in wildlife management areas outside Narrows, though they often lack amenities. The tent-only sites at Meadow Creek Campground in nearby New River Gorge offer spacious camping areas but minimal shade since trees are newly planted. Train noise affects some tent areas, particularly those near railroad tracks. According to one visitor at Walnut Flats Campground, "The road up needs a 4x4. Nice vault toilets and a hand pump water." Several tent-friendly locations provide direct water access, making them popular bases for fishing, kayaking, and swimming during summer months, though campers should be prepared for limited privacy at more accessible waterfront sites.

Need an overnight stay on 81/77 this is the place. Booked is call them complete the reservation via Campspot app which they use so I had to download it. Place had plenty of sites pull through which I didnt need but they were so accommodating. I had a perfect view of mountains and cow pasture Relaxation and sleep close to bathhouse and office. They also have propane fill for your camper
We stayed in Site number 24 which is full hook ups, however, just about all of the sites number is one through 32 are less than desirable either very little room outside your camper or the back in sites are steep hard to level your camper and very little room to set a set of chairs out I would not camp in this area of the campground again.
From check in to our stay, large big rig drive through lot. Quiet and clean park. Even had pizza and delicious wings delivered right to our coach. Next time through we hope to stay again.
Owner is friendly, people staying here consist of workers and retired people for the most part so the people are very quiet, beautiful river running through the end of the campground and a nice little hiking trail and a wide open area for kids to run and play. Only “bad” part is the road noise you are about 200 yards off that highway and can here it all day and night! But if your like me and don’t mind you will love it here!
What a great find! Private sites, nice walking areas, and great hosts. Top it off with clean bathrooms with great showers and this was a win for us. It may not be suitable for bigger rigs but for our 22’ van, it was perfect.
Great campground. Very clean. Campsites are well placed.
Easy to get to, parking and bathrooms nearby, kayak access, 3+ mile trail access, cell service is reliable
Nice place to camp very relaxing.
