Right on the river

Cool spot. I feel like it’s haunted. South side junction trail is right there and leads to thurmond ; an almost abondoned coal mining town

Odd setup but free is free!

Setup is four sites in one line, so to get to the pot-o-potty or parking lot, you walk through other sites. Otherwise, the riverfront spot is perfect and it’s a quite secluded campground! And who can beat the price!

Note for light sleepers: there is an active railroad across the river and there were probably 5-10 trains the Wednesday night that we stayed.

Great location, map was wrong

Google maps does not take you there, it took us to the other side of the river. We arrived after dark. There is no check in. You just arrive and pick a site. We came out of regular camping season so we couldn’t find anywhere near by that sold firewood. There is 1 handicap site and 4 sites by the river. The handicap site is the only one that you can drive directly up to. The 4 sites by the river have a parking lot and you walk (not very far at all, 10 - 50 yards) to them. The view of the river is beautiful and you can watch trains pass on the opposite side of the river.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities and facilities are available at Brooklyn Campground?

Brooklyn Campground offers basic facilities with a minimalist camping experience. The campground features just five total sites - four standard sites arranged in a line and one designated handicap-accessible site. Facilities include a port-a-potty toilet and a parking lot. The campsites are situated near the river, with some offering riverfront views. Due to the linear arrangement of sites, expect to walk through other campsites to reach common areas. Be aware that there is an active railroad across the river that may disturb light sleepers.

Are there free camping options at Brooklyn Campground or nearby?

Brooklyn Campground itself is a free camping option within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. With only five sites available (including one handicap-accessible site), it operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no formal check-in process - you simply arrive and select an available site. This makes it an excellent budget option for exploring the area around Fayetteville and the national park. Note that amenities are minimal, reflecting the no-fee status. If Brooklyn is full, contact the National Park Service visitor center for information about other free or low-cost camping options in the vicinity.

Where is Brooklyn Campground located in New River Gorge?

Brooklyn Campground is located within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve along the riverfront. It's important to note that Google Maps directions can be inaccurate, sometimes directing visitors to the opposite side of the river. The campground is situated near the South Side Junction Trail, which connects to Thurmond, a historic coal mining town. For accurate directions, it's best to follow official National Park Service guidance or contact the park visitor center before your trip.
