Island In the Sky Road BLM Dispersed near Big Flat

Open high-desert benchland just west of the Island In the Sky mesa, this BLM dispersed area sits at roughly 5,900 feet with wide canyon-country views and the emptiness of the Colorado Plateau in every direction — Canyonlands' Island In the Sky District lies just to the south. Camping begins past the half-mile mark from the main road, where a handful of natural pullouts and fire rings are scattered across the flat; the area is exposed with little shelter from wind, which can be strong. The rutted dirt access road is manageable in dry conditions for cautious drivers in two-wheel-drive vehicles, but it deteriorates quickly when wet and the more technical sections beyond the first pullouts demand four-wheel drive and high clearance.
