Lake Houston Wilderness Park (LHWP) is a beautiful, lushly forested expanse of nearly 5,000 acres, located three miles east of New Caney (approximately 30 miles north of Houston) off Hwy-59. Lake Houston Wilderness Park is the only park in the department that allows overnight stays in cabins and campsites.
Most of the park is heavily forested with over 20 miles of trails which provide a quiet escape from the bustling city. The park offers a variety of outdoor experiences for people of all ages including camping, hiking, trail running, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, birding, fishing and horseback riding trails (visitors must bring own bikes, fishing equipment, watercraft, and horses).
The climate is usually warm and humid during the summer months and the winters are generally mild and short. The average summer temperature is around 90° but overall the average temperature throughout the year is around 67°. The average rainfall 51 inches.

Wide roads to maneuver and large spaces made it easy to get in and get setup, no cars clogging the lanes. Private rooms in the bathhouse let you feel comfortable and not like a locker room.
Everyone was so friendly and nice and the park feels like you are not in the city despite so close to everything. At night the string lights overhead give a warm and comforting feeling to walk around and enjoy the cool evening air.
No trees or picnic tables at the sites, but, we had our own table and chairs to use.

We had a wonderful 1 night stay camping here! When the new owners took over, they did change the name to "Made in the Shade" so if you go to the website listed here it will reroute you to the correct page!
My partner is cycling the country and this is a great spot to stop for the night on the Southern Tier Bike route. We loved socializing with the owners & locals and others staying at the park, cooling off in the [well-kept] pool, and appreciated the good water pressure of the showers! 100% recommend. Great park if you want to get outside, but still want access to civilization.
Park is somewhat of a mix between wetland and forest. While this is an awesome ecosystem with lots to see and explore - take bug spray! Especially if going in May - when the Horseflies are out. We made the mistake of forgoing the Off and got eaten alive. This is our fault, and not the parks, though.
The park is conveniently located just outside of Beaumont. In fact, you may feel like you haven’t left the city until you are there. This can be helpful if you want to grab a bite and not cook, or if you run short of supplies. I would recommend this park especially for someone new to camping.

I have heard that it is very crowded with campers during spring break and in the summer. Also, there is a gated community being built behind the section of beach near Retilion Rd. I spoke with two city officials with Nuisance Abatement. There is talk of instituting a 2 week limit.

Overall Rating: 4 - would be a 5 but for heavy usage of day users during sunny weekends. Many are great. Few are not. One child came behind our camper and helped herself to our collection of shells while her mom watched. Careful of your belongings.

Great place to stay for a day or long term. Near Woodlands medical facilities, next to an elementary school, H.E.B. around the corner. Pretty much any cuisine is near by.

Very nice lady called prior to our arrival to ask if she could charge our card so she could prepare the packet. When we arrived it was all ready and maybe took 5 minutes. Didn’t use baths or laundry. Park was clean, plenty of length for our 42’ 5th wheel and truck. Hookups were in good spots. The sites are very narrow and pretty close to fellow campers but it was all good.

First and foremost Cameron and his wife are literally the kindest most loving people we have met at a site. The daily popcorn with a different flavor each day was something my wife and I looked forward to. The park is EXTREMELY clean and well taken care of.

This was such a blissful place to start my Texas snowbird trip. As a solo female traveler in a campervan I felt so incredibly safe and welcomed to this campground. Nancy and Butch are the kindest campground hosts I've ever encountered. They ensured to check in with me regularly during my two week stay, the bathroom, shower and laundry facilities were maintained consistently, and the dog park and closeness to the beach was perfect for my dog's daily exercise. For the reasonable price, I felt this campground delivered above and beyond. If I hadn't scheduled another campground, I would have stayed longer. Thank you to all at Beachside RV. This RV park resides in the middle of industrial businesses. Not many know it is there. The area around is not the greatest, but you cannot beat the prices. Have stayed over a year and a half.

We loved this campground. Stayed one night on our way to Houston. Then We stayed one more night on our way back home. Site 18 was pretty level and had full hook ups. The campground overall was really very quiet and peaceful. Was approx 2 miles off highway 59. Had a great playground area for kids and we loved walking down to the lake. The lady running the office was super kind and very helpful. If we ever get back to this area again we will be sure to stay for more than one night.
