Several campgrounds within driving distance of Catawissa, Pennsylvania provide rustic cabins with varying amenities and comfort levels. Knoebels Campground offers cabin rentals with electricity, featuring a queen-sized bed and loft bunk arrangement. According to one visitor, "The insides of the cabins had a large queen size bed and then a loft bunk. There was a nice built in shelf with electric and even a good amount of hooks and cubbies for storage." Lake Glory Campground in Catawissa itself provides similar accommodations, though some guests note the cabins are positioned close together. Whispering Pines Camping Estates, about 30 minutes north, maintains clean, pet-friendly cabins that receive consistently positive reviews for their family-friendly atmosphere.

Rustic cabins in state parks near Catawissa typically include basic furnishings but require guests to bring additional items for comfort. Worlds End State Park, though farther away, exemplifies the typical state park cabin experience with wood-burning stoves for heat, electricity, and basic kitchen facilities. "The cabins stay very warm with a wood burning stove—sometimes even too warm and windows need to stay cracked open," notes one camper. Most state park cabins sleep 6-8 people with bunk bed arrangements. Peak season at many locations requires longer minimum stays, often 5+ days, while off-peak periods allow weekend bookings. Pet policies vary significantly between properties, with some state parks prohibiting pets in cabin areas while private campgrounds like Whispering Pines welcome them.

Most cabin rentals provide beds with mattresses but require visitors to bring their own linens, pillows, and towels. Kitchen facilities range from bare-bones (just electricity) to more equipped setups with refrigerators and stoves, though running water is not universal in more rustic options. Bathhouses with showers and toilets are typically a short walk from cabin areas, with most reviewers noting they are clean and well-maintained. Firewood is generally available for purchase on-site, with Knoebels offering a "fill a bucket for $5" option. Basic groceries and camping supplies can be found at camp stores within larger properties, though for extended stays, bringing provisions from home is recommended as rural store options may be limited.

      Hickory Run State Park Campground

Peaceful State Park Camping in the Fall

This is a large campground with a wide array of campsites so be careful attention when you book online, especially if you have a pet because some sites are not pet-friendly. Some are 50-amp full hook-up and some are primitive with no hook-ups.

There is a nice nature center with interesting interpretive exhibits and lots of informational brochures including ones about the hiking trails, bears, scat and tracks of local animals, and fishing. Our site was at the edge of the campground and backed up to Route 534 which resulted in a bit of road noise at our site. Other than the road noise the campground was pretty quiet and was not very crowded when we camped there in October.

Not all sites are level and we happened to book one that was not and we had to live with a slant for our stay. The roads in the park are gravel/dirt and since it rained the day we arrived the roads were a muddy mess which made the roads slippery and there were lots of potholes. Unfortunately, some campers were disrespectful and left bags of trash in the fire pit and scattered around their site which was totally unnecessary because there were dumpsters plenty of dumpsters in the campground. Since we camped at Hickory Run late in the season, there were no camp hosts and the trash never got picked up.

The campground is open from mid-April to mid-December; however, the shower facilities and dump station are not available after the third week of October so plan accordingly. We really like the hiking trails which are of varying degrees of difficulty and lengths. The Hawk Falls is a nice easy walk (1.4 miles round-trip) to a waterfall but is extremely popular so don’t think you will be admiring the falls alone. The parking lot at this trail head fills up fast so you better get there early if you want to get a spot.

You can enter the park from two different directions. If you have a big-rig, it is best to approach from the east side. We made the mistake of coming in from the west side as we dropped down from I-80 and came down 534 and the road was really windy with no shoulder. Luckily, there was very little traffic so we could go 10 mph and safely navigate the roads.

Be aware alcohol is not allowed in PA state parks. This park does allow hunting in certain sections of the park. The no-hunting areas are clearly marked with white no hunting signs on trees and you can also pick up a brochure from the office that designates hunting and no-hunting sections.

      Ricketts Glen State Park Campground

      Beautiful Falls!

What a great campground! We stayed here on a recommendation from a friend after the Overland Expo. Great hiking trails and the falls were absolutely breathtaking. Truly enjoyed our stay and plan to return!

      Hickory Run State Park Campground

      Beautiful forest

Gorgeous forested area in the Poconos. We stayed on the Rattlesnake Loop which was lovely. Sites not super private but most nestled in trees. The only bummer was that that Campground Loop didn’t have any direct links to the trail network and was far from it. The other Campground Loop was closer to trails and office. Would return!

      Hersheypark Camping Resort

      EXPENSIVE

There was no hot water in the showers. There are no dog poo stations. There is a dumpster marked “STAFF ONLY”. It’s nice they have a place to stuff the staff!

      Sunsational Family Campground

I would not recommend to anyone

This campground is nothing as stated in the reviews.  And now I know why.  The one review on here besides mine is from the owner.  The bathrooms are not clean. I was told for Labor Day weekend I could stay for two nights had reserved and all.  They then abruptly cancelled my reservation and took three days to respond and say I could have a different cabin and tent sight but would need to stay three nights because of the holiday.   They also charged a cleaning for a service pet which is not legal.  We then showed up and were the only people staying that weren’t seasonal site people and very not welcomed.  The first comment made was here come the weekend warriors.  We look at the cabin which was ironically filthy and covered in mouse poop yet we got charged a cleaning fee.  The grass was not mowed the porter potty’s so gross bugs are crawling in the bottom.  The camp store was closed during the car show they had and when we asked when it will be open they stated it will not.  It was 1 pm on a Saturday.  The reservation process was unorganized.  The playground was not mowed or weed whacked and a slide is ratchet strapped together.   I would not recommend this place to anyone.

The sites ard nice, it's run by Mennonites, I believe. Lots of recreation for kids, quiet time respected and a service on Sunday morning. Full hookups for a very reasonable price.

      Twin Grove RV Resort

      Nothing open

Picked the nicest days of the week. Got here and the carousel, Ferris wheel, restaurant, and ice cream shoppe are closed. They are apparently only open 2 days a week, maybe 3. I would have just went down the road to the KOA had I not known this.

    Guide to Catawissa

Pennsylvania's cabin camping options near Catawissa sit within the eastern foothills of the Appalachians, where elevations range from 500 to 1,800 feet above sea level. The region experiences distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F during peak camping months. Many cabin rentals in this area offer proximity to the Susquehanna River, with seasonal fishing opportunities from April through October.

    What to do

Boulder field exploration: Visit Hickory Run State Park, home to a unique 16-acre boulder field formed during the ice age. "There is a lot to do in the state park. Many hiking trails (44 miles of trails). They are rated from easy to difficult," notes one visitor who particularly enjoyed the Hawk Falls and Shades of Death trails.

Waterfall hiking: Explore the 22 waterfalls at Ricketts Glen State Park, accessible via a moderate 4-mile loop trail. "We saw 18 of them on a four-mile moderate hike, but if you want to see the additional four, you could make it a seven-mile hike. The trails are very well marked," shares a recent camper.

River activities: During summer months, paddle the Susquehanna River near Montgomery. One camper at Riverside Campground reports: "River was low and slow so we dropped in at Montgomery boat club instead of Muncy. Took about 3 hours with a lunch stop on island. Nice spots right next to river where we set up lawn chairs in river and let the kids play."

    What campers like

Spacious wooded sites: Tent campers appreciate the natural setting at Whispering Pines Camping Estates. A camper noted: "The sites were level, clear, and pristine. A small wooded area separated the tinting area from the RV site with a nice little grove of trees between each campsite."

Winter accessibility: Several cabin rentals in the region remain open year-round. A visitor to Splash Magic RV Resort mentioned: "The area is beautiful and I would like to stay in the winter when many of the activities are available and it is warmer."

Rural seclusion: Cabin campers value the quieter campgrounds around Catawissa. "Very nicely kept, security does rounds to check on campers, there's a shuttle to Knoebels Amusement Resort. There is a lake you can fish in and a playground for the kids," explains a Lake Glory visitor.

    What you should know

Lake swimming options: Multiple campgrounds feature lake swimming during summer months. At Lake Glory Campground, "The lake is stocked and the fish are always hungry. 10 minutes to Knoebels with the mighty Phoenix," according to a long-time visitor.

Seasonal activity schedules: Many campgrounds change their programming by season. One visitor to Williamsport South-Nittany Mountain KOA advises: "Pay attention to the Theme Weekend Events– they will be crowded and there could be an additional fee. We were charged $20 for the Care Camp Weekend."

Bear safety protocols: Wilderness cabin areas require food storage awareness. A Hickory Run visitor reported: "Be aware that this area has a high bear population and all campers are required to keep food items in their vehicles or trailers when not at the site."

    Tips for camping with families

Animal attractions: Children enjoy petting zoos at select campgrounds. A visitor to Williamsport South-Nittany Mountain KOA described: "There is a petting zoo, jump pillow, and regularly scheduled activities. Can't wait to go back next year!"

Entertainment options: Family-oriented campgrounds offer organized activities. "There were thunderstorms and campsite was a little flooded but we were still able to camp. This place is a cute little campground that allows dogs and has a bar right on the property," shares a visitor to Riverside Campground.

Off-peak scheduling: For quieter family cabin stays, consider weekday bookings. A camper at Splash Magic noted: "If you are first timer and going in for Friday - Sunday weekend camp trip...know this campground will be packed. We tried to rent kettle bikes for the kids twice during our stay and none were available both times."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choose sites based on hookup needs and privacy. A visitor to Riverside Campground & Riverside Roadhouse reported: "We had campsite 19 - pull through with full hookups (50amp, cable, water, sewer). The site was nice and long. Even though they have had a lot of rain in this area, our jacks did not sink into the ground and the site was pretty level."

Technology access: Cell service varies widely around Catawissa. One camper at Williamsport South noted: "The cable TV and WiFi were good as was cell phone reception," while others reported poor connectivity at more remote cabin locations.

Utility considerations: Some parks experience power limitations during peak season. A Splash Magic visitor observed: "Electric ran below 110 volts the entire weekend and the water had a brownish tint to it. It was a VERY hot weekend so I should mention that everyone had their air running."
