    Charles Mill Lake Park Campground

    mixed feelings 😕

Upon arrival friendly staff greeted us. Bath houses are clean and well maintained.  Our site was not clean and ready.  Picnic table looked like it was not cleaned since last season and the fire pit was full of rubbish.  Had campers behind us who played music so loud we couldn't hear each other talk.  I asked the gentleman to please turn it down and they did slightly. Another camper also asked them to turn it down and again it was very slight.  Well after midnight music continued.  No park ranger made rounds until Saturday morning and throughout the day.

The lake is gorgeous this weekend and we enjoyed riding bikes and walking the park.

May be back to try again.

    Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point

    Immaculate!

Absolutely beautiful RV park! Gorgeous views of Lake Erie and walking distance to the gate of Cedar Point. Beautiful landscaping and very clean. Staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Good little camp store with reasonable(ish) prices. Too chilly to swim but the pool looks nice. Bathhouses are updated, clean and very nice, but pretty far from about half of the sites. One section has premium sites with upgraded grills and fire pits and crazy good lake views. The regular sites are still well landscaped and each have a grill and an extra long picnic table, but no fire pit. You can bring your own fire pit if your site doesn't have one. No bikes or golf carts allowed on the grounds, but there are Cedar Point buses available day & night as well as rickshaws during the day. Until now I have held Disney World's Fort Wilderness as the penultimate place for camping but they could learn a few things from Cedar Point! We stayed five nights in a pull through sites, #231. I would love to snag a premium site for our next trip but it may be difficult because they allow you to book up five years in advance!

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Love this place

A great campground in Ohio. So clean and so many things to do. Campsites are close together but they do honor quiet hours. Great trail around the lake and a fun and challenging disc golf course.

    Kelleys Island State Park Campground

    Best weekend camping

We will definitely be going back! Campground is on the lake and is beautiful! So many things to do! The camp is clean, has a playground, and movie night. Bath house is a typical campground bath house. We had a tent site and it was huge! Sites come with fire pit and picnic table. Beach is within walking distance of campsite.

    Camp Sandusky

    Very nice campgrounds!

There is so much structure and order to this campground! The grounds are laid out so nicely! One big circle with cross roads all along the way. You can camp however you'd like too! They have RV sites, tent sites and cabins. All mixed in together so you can travel with all your favorite campers. They do breakfast every morning in the front pavilion for $4.50 (all you can eat pancakes, 1 sausage and coffee) I haven't tried it yet, but its certainly popular. Laundry is open 24 hours a day and in an open area. Not the biggest fan of that due to needing to do laundry in the rain. Bathrooms are clean and standard. Row of toilet stalls and showers in a separate room. They have a stellar playground area, I don't have kids but even I was drawn to wanting to play on it. Very pet friendly around here. Close to downtown, near Cedar Point and all the other attractions over here. They have 2 pools, one being heated. We haven't had a bad rain storm while we're here but you can tell by the ground of our spot its going to be bad and super muddy. All in all this campground is pretty awesome.

    East Harbor State Park Campground

    Very nice campground

This campground is very large with lots of spots to choose from. The C portion has few trees, but if you choose a spot off one of the south circles, the sites are private. The bathhouse is very clean and well maintained. If you want quiet, it may not be for you because lots of families camp there. Quiet hours were, however, quiet! Trails are wide, grassy, and mowed, great for families who want to walk with children. WiFi is not strong, so don't plan on streaming a movie in the evening. There are plenty of things to do, though. My husband and I had a great time!

    Kelleys Island State Park Campground

    Spoiled Diamond in the Rough

I have been coming up to Kelleys Island for 39yrs and this year really tested my happiness. The campground has gone through quite a bit of changes over the last couple years and it's not entirely for the better. We stayed on the water front site directly next to the trail for the public beach. I do not recommend this site unless you want everyone to walk through the site at any time all day long. People do not respect quiet hours and leave their porch lights on in the cabins that now sit on the water front. There used to be VIPs that cleaned the park everyday and maintained everything. Not anymore and the park seems a little less friendly now. Golf carts are or were prohibited from entering the campground but now drive around the park all day long creating quite the ruckus and disturbing the beauty of nature. The bathrooms did get an upgrade of fixtures and super bright LED lights, but they took out the ADA accessible showers that had detachable shower heads and a bench to sit on in the shower. This beautiful well kept secret feels a lot like it's sister island Put-in-Bay now with all the rules stripped no care for the environment with partying all day. We did however have beautiful weather the entire time we were there. The site was clean but we noticed a lot of trees had been lost over the years and our camper sat in full sun all day long. They have replanted a tree that will cover the parking pad with shade in probably 10 years. The stairs to get to the public beach we decaying railroad ties that need some TLC but work. The dumpstation has moved to back of the campground by the old pet section which is nice and keeps the noise away from the rest of the park. They also stripped the Ranger program and no longer offer education hikes, movie nights, island history hikes, or the nature program. These were all favorites of mine as a child and made me appreciate the island more.

Guide to Vermilion

Camping near Vermilion, Ohio offers diverse overnight options with sites situated along Lake Erie's southern shore at elevations under 700 feet. The region experiences a humid continental climate with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F between May and September. Seasonal campgrounds typically operate from April through October, closing during winter months when temperatures drop below freezing.

What to Do

Lake swimming access: The campground at South Bass Island State Park features a rocky beach area good for swimming. "The campground has a beach and playground. You can also purchase wood. Yurts are available for rent," notes Erin H., who recommends bringing or renting bikes to tour the island.

Local exploration: Milan Travel Park serves as a convenient base for day trips. "Just 15-20 minutes from Cedar Point which is an easy ride," reports Tracey S., who found the campground "right off of interstate 80, and couldn't be easier to get to."

Fishing opportunities: The pond at American Wilderness Campground provides fishing without needing a boat. "We love the fishing available here we also had the kids they enjoyed the arcade and gem mining," shares Jessica J., noting the campground also offers laundry facilities.

Glacial landmark visits: When staying on Kelleys Island, the glacial grooves are a unique geological feature. "Amazing small town feel with cute shops, family activities, world's largest glacier groves, shallow beach and fun history," writes Daniel U., who also mentions the campground's waterfront sites.

What Campers Like

Waterfront views: East Harbor State Park campers appreciate the lakeside setting. "Very nice campground, it's large so if you're walking around, remember to take a map. The campground is right on the shore of Lake Erie, there are a few restaurants nearby," advises Michi P.

Early park access: Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point offers special perks for theme park visitors. "The campground stay also included early entry passes into the park at 8:45 AM before the opening for regular entry at 10:00 am," explains Elise A., who also notes they didn't have to check out until 8:00 pm.

Island seclusion: Campers at Kelleys Island State Park enjoy the ferry-accessed location. "Been going here my entire life. Amazing small town feel with cute shops, family activities... no city lights and being in the middle of the lake means lots of stars, the sounds of water and being so dark you can barely see," says Daniel U.

Clean facilities: Many visitors mention well-maintained bathrooms. "Clean common areas. Nice pool, camp store on site with a nice selection of camp gear," reports Kathryn P. about Cleveland Jellystone Park, which also offers a snack bar with pizza and ice cream.

What You Should Know

Ferry logistics: When planning yurt camping on Vermilion, Ohio's islands, transportation timing matters. "You have to take a ferry to the camp ground. It is a few miles to camp ground so if you are renting and don't bring a vehicle you will want to rent a golf cart," advises Lauri J. about Kelleys Island.

Weekend crowds: Island campgrounds become busy during summer weekends. "Mid week during the summer season is the best time for those who aren't into 24 hour partying," suggests Stephen S., who notes Kelly's Island is quieter with a natural sand beach compared to South Bass Island.

Weather considerations: Lake Erie can bring unpredictable conditions. "It stormed while I was there and the winds got strong, so make sure your tent is sturdy, or choose an in-land campsite," warns Theresa P. about camping on South Bass Island.

Seasonal closures: Most campgrounds operate April through October. "During the week only one shower house was open, they opened them all in the weekend," notes Daniel U. about off-season amenities, adding they "got stuck due to rough waters so we got a free night on the island."

Tips for Camping with Families

Water activities: Crystal Rock Campground offers family-friendly aquatic options. "The owners and employees were so amazingly sweet and helpful. Tom went out of his way to make extra fun activities for the little kiddos," shares Crystal J., who mentions her daughter enjoyed the sandbox and playground.

Child safety concerns: Some waterfront sites require extra vigilance. "Most sites have at least one tree. The tent only area has lots of shade," notes Lauri J., while Stephen S. cautions that the "cliff-side sites right on the water... is probably not good for small children."

Playground options: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas for children. "The camp has a little bay which works out great for having a small boat, jet-ski, and also a small swimming area," mentions Rebecca F. about Kelleys Island, which combines water access with recreational facilities.

Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds offer nature programs. "Great hiking, wonderful nature center on site with some planned activities to participate in," shared one visitor about East Harbor State Park's educational offerings for young campers.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Indian Trail Campground offers complete services. "Nice campground clean restrooms. Didn't use the showers since we had full hook up," notes Dawn S., who also mentions the swimming pool and trails for golf carts.

Site selection strategy: When booking at East Harbor State Park, location matters. "The key is site selection at East Harbor... we happened to be in section C which was a newer section of the park," explains Mark S., adding that "The benefit of C is that there is a very nice newer shower house by the pull through lots."

Leveling considerations: Some campgrounds have more level sites than others. "Most space have at least one tree. The tent only area has lots of shade," reports Lauri J., while another camper notes "The flattest RV sites with fair to good locations are Sites 57 and 44 (although even these will require a little leveling)."

Check-in efficiency: Several campgrounds offer streamlined arrival. "Very friendly and efficient check in," notes Sue B. about Milan Travel Park, appreciating the "many level pull through sites" that don't require unhooking for overnight stays.
