Vermilion area RV camping offers sites on Lake Erie's southern shore with access to water activities during the May-October camping season. Most RV parks close for winter except for the Vermilion Valley Ohio Turnpike RV Lot. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F with higher humidity, while spring and fall camping brings cooler 50-70°F days with less crowding.
What to do
Water recreation access: Cedarlane RV Resort in Port Clinton includes multiple pools and water features. "They have a great splash pad and wading pool for kids. There is a new Tiki Hut to get adult drinks," notes Jeffrey C., who appreciated the family-friendly water activities.
Fishing opportunities: Bayfront Resort provides private lake access with boat launch facilities for anglers. "Has really good views of the lake and cider point. The only problem was I don't have a boat or jet ski to take advantage of there private boat ramp," explains Jeffrey L.
Amusement park access: Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point offers direct access to Cedar Point amusement park. "Easy walk to the park or swim park! Literally the best way to stay at Cedar Point!!!" reports Malinda B., highlighting the convenience for thrill-seekers staying at this location.
Hiking trails: Findley State Park Campground features extensive forest paths. "We can easily get lost on 3 mile hikes in the woods and still be on marked paths! The roads are paved and excellent for biking and skating," shares Kimberly C., who enjoyed the outdoor activity options.
What campers like
Concrete pads: RV campers appreciate the level, paved sites at Lighthouse Point. "Concrete pads. Level! Full hookups were simple to use. The pool area was super clean. One of the thinks I liked best was there was a garbage can on every site!" writes Chuck E.
Waterfront views: Fort Firelands RV Park offers sites with water views. "We had the best lot in the place! We were on the end (which is always a plus for us), and were able to see Lake Erie!" shares Lisa K., highlighting the premium waterfront location.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms. "The bathroom was nice and close and handy. Some great effort has been made to make it attractive with two-tone tile," notes Sue B. from Gotta Getaway RV Park, though she did mention issues with bugs.
Seasonal atmosphere: Many parks cultivate community among seasonal campers. "Everyone at this campground is so friendly even the staff is great. The campground has season spots to daily and weekly spots along with yearly," explains Jason D. at Riverview RV Park.
What you should know
Variable site sizes: Site dimensions differ significantly between and within campgrounds. "We stayed at site 156. The site was large with a large grassy area right on the lagoon," reports Renee L. at Fort Firelands, contrasting with more compact sites at other locations.
Limited sewage options: Some parks have sewage restrictions. "This campground does not have sewage and pumps you out twice a week if seasonal and yearly. If you need a pump out it 20$ for emergency situations," Jason D. explains about Riverview RV Park.
Reservation timing: Sandusky Milan RV Park and other popular locations fill quickly. "This campground is right off of interstate 80, and a very easy stop! Clean bathrooms/showers, mostly level sites, full hook ups available," notes Tracey S., who recommends booking early.
Electrical options: Most parks offer 50-amp service, but adaptors may be needed. "They only had 50w outlets, but will lend you a converter for $15.00, which is refundable upon leaving," shares Lisa K. about Fort Firelands RV Park.
Tips for camping with families
Activity options: Cedarlane RV Resort offers numerous family amenities. "This campground has a little bit of everything. Rv parking, tent sites and several cabins to rent. Rates are decent. Has lots of stuff for kids to do," recommends Jeffrey C.
Beach access considerations: Lake Erie beaches vary in quality. "We visited east harbor state park while there and the beach was weird, there's a rock wall bordering the lake so you have to either climb down the low wall or walk to the designated opening in the wall," explains Ashley R. from Cedarlane.
Playground facilities: Many campgrounds offer play areas for children. "The campground has been wonderfully updated! The owners have added in an additional playground, dog park, newly paved roadways," reports April J. about Sandusky Milan RV Park.
Educational opportunities: Some parks feature nature centers with programming. "Many musicians set up camp and would jam out for some live evening music! Everyone was so nice at the campground," shares Kimberly C. about Findley State Park's community atmosphere.
Tips from RVers
Pull-through accessibility: Large rigs should seek specific sites. "It would be a bonus for big rigs as the pull Throughs are flat and easy to get into. We tend to prefer a back in because it usually gives us a bit more protection on the backside," advises Sue B. about Gotta Getaway RV Park.
Overnight travel options: Vermilion Valley Ohio Turnpike RV Lot provides convenient stopover facilities. "Clean with electric hookup got $20. Dump station as you exit. Gas and convenience items are extra helpful. Safe environment to snooze overnight," recommends Susan B.
Late checkout benefits: Some parks offer extended departure times. "Perfect for our visit to Cedar Point. We got there late at 9:00 pm and didn't have to check out until 8:00 pm the next day so our RV stayed plugged in to all day," explains Elise A. about Lighthouse Point.
