    The closedown weekend.

We chose this campground based it’s prox to Brandywine Falls, Cuyahoga falls and Chagrin falls. Very clean and well maintained. KOA Bath house trailer was very clean, easy to utilize the outdoor kitchen.

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

    Bad experience

Stayed here on Saturday night of July 4th weekend. Arrived after hours without a reservation. No information on how to self register or which campsites were available even though some sites are first come first served. Found an open site, set up and went to bed. There were fireworks (prohibited) and the campsite next to us played loud music but it was before quiet hours so we didn’t mind. The loud music turned into a party with alcohol (prohibited) and the loud music continued way past quiet hours. No campground host or personnel did anything about the noise/party. At 12:30am we moved campsites because we couldn’t sleep. We saw sheriff patrolling the campground - don’t know why they didn’t quiet the offenders.

The campground is large with many sites so the probability of inconsiderate people is higher. I won’t be returning.

    Charles Mill Lake Park Campground

    mixed feelings 😕

Upon arrival friendly staff greeted us. Bath houses are clean and well maintained.  Our site was not clean and ready.  Picnic table looked like it was not cleaned since last season and the fire pit was full of rubbish.  Had campers behind us who played music so loud we couldn't hear each other talk.  I asked the gentleman to please turn it down and they did slightly. Another camper also asked them to turn it down and again it was very slight.  Well after midnight music continued.  No park ranger made rounds until Saturday morning and throughout the day.

The lake is gorgeous this weekend and we enjoyed riding bikes and walking the park.

May be back to try again.

Mill Creek Camping — Berlin Lake Wildlife Area

Busy, but not too bad :)

Stayed a night here near the end of June after a rainstorm. A few quick highlights:

    1. Because there are a ton of sites, you can expect one thing: variety. There are plenty of aluminum Airstream, Winnebago, fifth wheels, pull behind, and tents. You can expect to find a little bit of everything here.

    2. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Mill Creek might not be for you. Most of the sites seem to be typically pretty packed. Generally, people respect quiet hours, but with sites so close to each other, noise is a factor.

    3. The surrounding area seems to be pretty spartan. There’s a grocery store about 10 minutes up the road, a bait shop about three minutes away, and a drive-through (with some light groceries and drinks) about two away. Nice enough folks in all three :) Super helpful and accommodating.

    4. Berlin lake seems to be the big draw. Plenty of boats, jet ski‘s, kayaks, and swimming opportunities. If that’s your thing, plan accordingly and you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, Mill Creek is a pretty solid site within driving distance of Akron / Canton. I’ll be back, with adjusted expectations.

Quick tip: My particular site was pretty muddy upon arrival. Granted, that was after a bit of rain. But it wouldn’t hurt to bring an extra pair of shoes ;-)

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

Well kept park with good spot spacing

Stayed here the first weekend of October.  Nice spots and many have good spacing from your neighbors.  Pets are welcome.  Facilities are older but well kept.  Bathhouse is heated with showers that have a fiberglass tub surround, not concrete.  Nice hiking trails that connect through the campground.  Hiking trail maps are not great but the trails are marked well. The Lake is a good walk and looks good for kayaking and fishing.  Brought our kayaks but it was a bit too cold.  Big wide spots are 11 and 16.  Nice hammock hangers on the non-electric spots.

Quiet, peaceful, close to all the things

We stopped here for a couple nights to go to a Cleveland Guardians game and go to Cuyahoga National Park. It was within great proximity to both and had all the amenities the kids and I love. Swimming (wish it were open a little later…) laundry 24/7, a game room, store with just what we needed to pick up a few things, a pond that seemed to always have someone fishing at it (that’s a good thing) and a big wide sites to spread out and have a nice campfire in. (Wood available 24/7 and trash pick up at the site in the AM). It’s always nerve wracking when the fire pits are close to the rigs - loved that these sits were wide. And while there are likely people here it feels nice and spread out.

Good location but expensive for what you get

Pros: closest camping to Cuyahoga National Park, safe, professional (labeled envelopes with information at check-in and wood delivery) Cons: bathrooms weren’t cleaned or restocked as frequently as necessary (overflowing trash cans, TP empty by 5 pm), shower curtains/showers had mildew, truly dirty bathroom floors, had to drive 1/4 mile to the one trash dumpster, unlevel sites

One more thing: there’s a significant raccoon and skunk problem along the section with water/electric back-in spots. We got to know our neighbors very well over two nights as we helped each other fend off multiple raids by entire families of raccoons and one very large, very bold skunk. We lost two camping chairs to the skunks because there was no way to fight them off once they moved into our shelter and, even without spraying, skunks tend to leave a scent behind on anything that’s fabric.

The price is okay in that it is the closest to the national park and the next closest campgrounds are the state park campgrounds (West Branch and Mosquito Lake), but the state park grounds are MUCH nicer and about $15 less per night. If you have the time to drive and can plan your trip months in advance to get reservations, West Branch is a better alternative.

    Clendening Lake Marina & Campground

    Peaceful serenity

My family and I had never gone tent camping before together, since my husband and I were kids. I have chronic pain and was terrified to go due to my difficulties. This place was amazing!

    PROS:

The shower houses are individual big rooms to use that include a shower with a seat and toilet. They do also have handicap parking&camping spots right by the shower house, no smell even being 89 degrees.

They also have amazing prices for renting out a pontoon, it’s only a max 10 mph. I was able to comfortably fish for 4 hours on this. For the boats we were allowed to park down below right by the docks so I wouldn’t have to walk the hill.

When you book online it needs to be done 2 days out, from where we live (Columbus Ohio) the reception at the camp was very very hard to hear on the phone. It is easier to book online then see them at the office when you arrive, they close at 7 pm. Checkin is at 4 pm and checkout is 2pm for camp set up(you can set up sooner if no one is there)

We were lucky to get a walk up electric spot, although hilly it was beautiful! We were right by the private dock and the residents were very kind, some offered us worms or help with our fire. Even though we were by the public outhouse you could not smell anything until right by the outhouse.

You do need a special plug for the electric, we didn’t realize this and did not bring one. I was panicked at first since I needed a fan to get through the 89 degree weather in a tent but the front office has spares you can borrow! They are a lifesaver up there and so kind, if we could have tipped we would have.

We caught plenty of fish up there for all 3 of us, including my 1 st grader, all we used were worms and was surprised how much we caught.

All in all we were really happy and even convinced my parents to come up with us next year 😊

    CONS:

The drive up was very hilly and lots of buggies. Be careful sometimes the road disappeared and you don’t see the buggy until right there; the road speed is 55mph but we only went between 35-45.

There is no cell service up there so be prepared, we lost it for about 20 minutes before the camp site. We have sprint. Make sure to pack a old school map so you can get around, there is a family dollar store in town, about 4 mile drive, if you forgot anything.

Most neighbors you have our yearly members, this is great for peace but limits the spots they actually have open to rent out by the lake and have electric. We were hoping to get a better spot in the future but they only have a couple of non yearly spots available even a year out.

    West Branch State Park Campground

    A ++

Always a great time at West Branch. The staff are very friendly and care a great deal about the quality of everyone's experience - they inspect and clean each site after the sites are vacated. The quiet hours are truly quiet, the bathrooms are very clean and fresh. Decided to rent a pontoon for the day - the boats were also very clean and well kept - they also have the option of an inner tube or jet skis if you want to rent those as well!

Guide to Dover

Glamping experiences near Dover, Ohio sit among rolling hills and wooded landscapes within Tuscarawas County. The region features numerous water recreation opportunities with lakes including Atwood, Tappan, and Salt Fork offering diverse terrain for campers. Summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F while fall camping season brings cooler 50-65°F temperatures and colorful foliage displays throughout the area.

What to do

Fishing access points: At Atwood Lake Park Campground, waterfront sites include docks directly accessible from campsites. "We could leave our camper, take the boat over to the beach and drop off the grandkids and me the Nana for swimming at the beach dock. Good fishing, clean clean clean," notes Susan S.

Basketball and volleyball: Tappan Lake Park Campground maintains courts that stay in good condition throughout the season. According to a camper, "Volleyball courts, and basketball courts were all in good condition. Plenty of hiking trails throughout the park."

Horseback riding options: The Canton/East Sparta KOA Holiday - Bear Creek Ranch offers on-site equestrian activities not commonly found at other area campgrounds. "Took the kids on the horse ride and they loved it. All staff were very friendly," shares Bradley B.

Wildlife viewing trails: Multiple hiking paths provide opportunities to spot local wildlife including deer and wild turkey. One Salt Fork camper reported, "Just driving in saw turkeys and 'turkets' and two 6 point bucks. You can hike, swim, boat, bike and horseback ride."

What campers like

Clean, modern facilities: Berlin RV Park & Campground receives consistent praise for their impeccable bathrooms. "SPOTLESS bathrooms and I mean SPOTLESS. Lots to do for kids: Sand Volleyball, basketball court, tetherball, corn hole area and playground," writes Tara T.

Water recreation proximity: Campgrounds with direct lake access remain the most popular. A camper at Atwood Lake Park noted, "Location, location, location! Grab a lake front spot and just hang out there! The park is in excellent condition and the facilities are just as clean and comfortable."

Family-friendly activities: Multiple campgrounds organize structured activities for children. "My kids and I have been coming to Atwood for the last 10 years. We look forward to it every summer. The people are friendly and there is always something to do!!" shares Leslie C.

Amish Country proximity: Several campgrounds serve as convenient bases for exploring nearby Amish attractions. According to Kenny C. at Berlin RV Park, "Spent the weekend here while visiting Amish country in Ohio. For the most part it is just a place to park your camper in a big open area while visiting the area."

What you should know

Site differences can be significant: Not all sites offer equal experiences, especially for tent campers. "This campground is HUGE (more than 500 sites), and it's absolutely jam packed with RVs and permanent trailers... Definitely not recommended for tent campers," warns Cassandra C. about Atwood Lake Park.

Water quality varies: Some campgrounds experience water issues. As one camper noted at Clay's Resort, "The water smelled horrible, and both the shower head and faucet were caked with scum. My kids begged not to have to take a shower because of the smell."

Seasonal crowds: Popular glamping destinations near Dover become extremely busy during peak summer weekends. Amy S. at Tappan Lake warns, "It was really crowded and the campers stayed up all night talking, screaming and listening to music."

Limited services nearby: Some locations require advance planning for supplies. "Make sure you don't forget anything or need gas, not much around," advises Aloma O. about Tappan Lake Park.

Tips for camping with families

Beach facilities: Salt Fork State Park Campground offers dedicated swimming areas though timing matters. "The lifeguards shut it down every half hour or so for break instead of rotating in and out," reports Theodore C.

Kid-friendly trails: Multiple hiking options suitable for various ages exist throughout the region. One visitor to Salt Fork notes, "There are several areas to pay for camping as well as primitive camp. It's near the water and they offer several trails."

Pet-friendly options: Most glamping sites near Dover welcome pets with specific restrictions. "Pets welcome on a leash, a beach and hiking also," mentions Susan S. about Atwood Lake.

Nature programs: Several parks offer educational opportunities. At Salt Fork, "The park has several Chestnut trees which is usually a rare find these days. They are working to bring them back."

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Woods Tall Timber Resort provides comprehensive services for larger rigs. One reviewer reports, "Such a beauty, even with a large RV we were accommodated. Lots of fun activities, and the trees are tall!"

Site leveling challenges: Many campgrounds feature uneven terrain requiring preparation. A camper at Tappan Lake noted, "We stayed in area 5. Awesome place," while another mentioned, "Sites are new, clean, full hookups, with plenty of paved surfaces to park. Camper sites are level and the hookups are new and easy to use."

Seasonal considerations: Several campgrounds operate with limited services during shoulder seasons. As one visitor to Tappan Lake mentioned, "It was late October so most things were closed. We'll definitely be back in 2024."

Site selection strategy: Waterfront locations typically offer the best experiences but book quickly. Fred R. advises, "Nice to see sailboats on the lake. All new camping spots with full hookup. Grass is coming in nicely."
