This is a dark sky preserve campground and the stars are the show. We stayed here at the end of the perseid meteor showers and saw several of falling meteors," shares Michelle M.
Wildlife observation: Birding opportunities exist throughout the region's parks and preserves. "This on a bay on the very western side of Lake Erie among a wildlife refuge and wilderness area. I came for the birding and wasn't disappointed," explains Dan N. at Maumee Bay State Park.

"One of my favorite things about this campground is that your spots are close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private. My grandparents were in the site next to me in their camper and I had to walk a ways to see their spot," explains Kayla H.
Clean facilities: Campers regularly mention well-maintained bathrooms. "Wifey says the bathrooms were Excellent (most important for her)," notes Daniel U. about Maumee Bay, while another visitor to Sterling State Park reports, "The shower house is clean and in good condition."
Seasonal events: Monroe-Toledo North KOA organizes themed weekend activities throughout the season. "I've been going to this campground for years, but mainly for the Halloween camping. It's a fun time of the year to go and the kids always have a blast. Most sites decorate and some site go all out with haunted houses," shares Ryan M.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Peak season bookings should be made months in advance, especially for cabin rentals. "This is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites," explains Marg B. about Lake Hudson's limited facilities.
Water quality concerns: Lake Erie shoreline swimming may be restricted during algae blooms. "I only gave this campground 3 stars due to not being able to swim (beach was closed due to algae/unsafe water)," reports one visitor to East Harbor State Park Campground.
Wildlife awareness: Proper food storage prevents animal encounters. "Typically there are a lot of raccoons so keep your food locked up tight," warns a camper at East Harbor State Park Campground.
