Shawnee State Park Campground welcomes pets throughout its 107 campsites, offering a mix of electric and non-hookup options for tent and RV campers. Leashed dogs are permitted at all sites, including the specialized tent-only areas tucked away in wooded sections and accessible via short walking paths. Sandy Springs Campground provides pet-friendly accommodations along the Ohio River with 50-amp electric and water hookups at all sites, plus fire rings and picnic tables ideal for camping with dogs. Bathhouses remain clean and accessible in both locations, though campers with mobility-impaired pets should note that some of Shawnee's secluded sites require climbing stairs. The campground stays remarkably quiet even when full, allowing pets and owners peaceful evenings without disturbance from neighboring sites.

Hiking trails begin directly from Shawnee State Park campground near site 86, providing immediate access for morning dog walks through the "Little Smokies of Ohio" with its rolling hills and valleys. The area features limited cell service, so pet owners should research veterinary options before arrival and bring all necessary pet supplies. Roosevelt Lake at Turkey Creek Campground allows dogs near water areas, though owners should check seasonal policies as swimming access varies. Multiple comfort stations throughout the campgrounds provide convenient locations for pet waste disposal. Trails through the surrounding forest offer abundant wildlife viewing opportunities, so keeping dogs leashed protects both local animals and pets. Winter campers should note that comfort stations close during off-season months, requiring additional planning for pet waste management.

      Cowan Lake State Park Campground

      Large Campground

Autumn is the best time to camp in Ohio. Lots of small bathrooms. Lake access. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was due to the fact there was no quick reentry. Had to wait for rvs in front of me to register.

Ohio River Campground and Marina — Shawnee State Park

      Very Peaceful, Very Clean

We stayed in Site 09. The sites are spacious with level, asphalted pads. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table.

Toward the front of the campground is a great splash pad, playground, and dog park, which includes an agility course. These are located away from the RV's; therefore, the campground was very quiet and peaceful.

Nearby was a marina, fishing access, and an archery range. The surrounding hills are pretty.

The bath house was clean. A laundry room was available.

The only drawback was the lack of shade. Because this place is relatively new, in time--as the planted seedlings grow--this problem will lessen.

      East Fork State Park Campground

      Overall great state park

Generous sized campsites, a lot of them are wooded which we prefer, with around 400 sites there are plenty to choose from! Bathroom/shower facilities are updated and usually well maintained. There is a large public beach but it's on the other side of the park so you have to drive all the way around to get to it, no short cuts. They have a camp ground beach but it's been closed the last 2 years. Lots of hiking trails, bridal trails and a bike path. Wish list for this park: Boat rental, dog park, dog beach/water access. Overall a beautiful park.

The Landing at Bear Creek RV Park

      Work in Progress

This is newly opened and a lot of work still needs to be done. Currently there is no dog park, hiking trails or bathhouses like it states. Many of the spots aren’t even finished yet.

When looking at the camp map don’t plan on having access to the creek or river. Your lucky if you can even view it.

The ground is all sand. So while if it rains you won’t get muddy, but the sand is a pain and gets everywhere.

The Landing at Bear Creek RV Park

      Family Atmosphere

This is the best campground we have stayed at. We have been here all summer and we’ve had no complaints. The owners are great people who are always here working and interacting with the campers. Splash pad, pavilion, playground, Gaga pit, and dog park are a few of the great amenities. Each lot has a fire pit and the lots are large. They do activities for the kids every weekend and also have bands! It’s a fun place.

The Landing at Bear Creek RV Park

Best full time campground on the Ohio River!

We are full-time RVers and this is by far the best park we've stayed at! It's peaceful and beautiful, everyone (especially Management) is so friendly and fun! The laundry facility is one of the greatest amenities as we've stayed other places without one, so we truly appreciate it! The splash pad is fantastic for children and adults alike! There's a dog park, and a kids kangaroo jump pad as well. The view of the river is beautiful! On weekends there's entertainment and/or cornhole tournaments to bring everyone together. The park is maintained perfectly and I've enjoyed calling it home! By far the best park in Southern Clermont County! Must see!

      Ashland Huntington West Campground

      Nice Campground Close to Interstate

      KOA Review

The campground it’s self is very clean and taken care of. We were there in early March with winter temps. The staff was extremely nice and helpful, bath house and laundry was clean. The water at our site was inoperable and they offered to move us without me even having to ask which was nice. The site could be maintained better ours had lots of tire ruts and fire pit could have been better for the price. Overall it’s a good campground with amenities in great shape. A good little dog park that was extremely clean, putt putt, and more. I would come back again in the off season just cause we like camping with less crowds.

    Guide to Lynx

Camping areas near Lynx, Ohio sit within the Appalachian foothills, characterized by rolling terrain between 700-1,000 feet elevation alongside the Ohio River valley. Campers encounter significant temperature variations between seasons, with summer highs averaging 85°F and winter lows frequently dropping below freezing. Most campgrounds in this region maintain quiet hours from 10pm to 7am, with limited cell service throughout much of the forested areas.

    What to do

Canoe the Tygart River: Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground offers water-based activities beyond the traditional camping experience. "Canoe the Tygart, take a trail ride, spelunk a Cave, eat a S'more, hike the red trail, see the natural bridge, come for pioneer week, Halloween is a hoot," explains a camper who's visited for generations.

Watch river barges: Sandy Springs Campground provides waterfront camping with views of commercial traffic. "It is so peaceful to watch the river and see the occasional boat or barge go by," notes one visitor. The campground offers direct river access for fishing and unique observation opportunities along the Ohio River.

Try the archery range: The newer Ohio River Campground section of Shawnee State Park features dedicated archery facilities away from camping areas. "Nearby was a marina, fishing access, and an archery range. The surrounding hills are pretty," reports one visitor who appreciated the varied outdoor options beyond traditional camping activities.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Long's Retreat Family Resort maintains exceptionally well-kept amenities despite heavy use. "The bathrooms and laundry room are very clean. The surrounding area seeps in history and we enjoyed exploring the area," mentions a winter camper who spent five months at the facility.

Secluded tent sites: Shawnee State Park Campground offers specialized tent-only areas that provide privacy. "Several of these secluded sites (along the back edge of the campground) are up a flight of stairs. You have to carry all your gear up a hill or stairs to set up. You will not be near your car, which can get annoying," notes a reviewer who appreciated the seclusion despite the extra effort.

Dog park with agility course: Shawnee State Park-Ohio River Campground includes specialized pet recreation areas. "Toward the front of the campground is a great splash pad, playground, and dog park, which includes an agility course. These are located away from the RVs; therefore, the campground was very quiet and peaceful," explains a visitor who found this dog-friendly campground near Lynx ideal for pet owners wanting structured pet exercise.

    What you should know

Limited cell service: Multiple dog-friendly campgrounds near the Lynx area have minimal connectivity. "There is non-existent cell service (Verizon) so we were happy there was an attendant at the booth when we arrived just before 6 pm on a Sunday evening," reports a camper at Turkey Creek Campground. Download maps and research veterinary services before arrival.

Site selection matters: Turkey Creek Campground requires careful site selection for RVs. "Many of the sites had even shorter pads; these would really best be suitable for tent campers as the pad would only fit a regular-size vehicle. Sites 1-6, 15, 18-21, and 23-25, 28, 32, and 33 have longer pads."

Limited access times: Some campgrounds restrict traffic during special events. "They closed the roads from 2 to 6 so we could not drive back to our site, and when we finally could, someone was in our parking spot for the next hour," notes a visitor during Halloween festivities at Shawnee State Park Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Family-friendly planning: Long's Retreat Family Resort offers structured activities for various age groups. "The campsite is totally geared towards family fun! My kids were busy nonstop with planned fun activities! And they had things for the adults as well and a lot of things for everyone to do together!"

Activity options: East Fork State Park Campground provides numerous recreation facilities across its extensive grounds. "Many activities can be enjoyed here including mini golf (small nine-hole course), soccer, basketball, tennis, volleyball, corn hole, boating, and bicycling. Playgrounds are in several loops (I saw them in C and G)."

Crowding considerations: Rocky Fork State Park Campground gets busy during peak season. "Not much privacy and you will hopefully make nice with your neighbors...Aside from limited trailage and not much shade in the lower area, very nice. More toward water activities." Families should book well in advance for holiday weekends.

    Tips from RVers

Extra equipment needed: Shawnee State Park Campground requires additional equipment for many sites. "Most sites are only 30 amp electric, no sewer or water hookup, which can be typical of state parks...check in with outside world. The lodge at the top of the hill has a weak signal, but is better than nothing if you really need to check in with outside world."

Full hookup availability: The Captain's Quarters offers complete RV connections in a unique setting. "Semi-Private lot with outdoor bar, fire pit and firewood. Close to two distilleries and a winery just across the river in Kentucky." RVers seeking pet-friendly locations with full hookups should consider this single-site option for privacy.

Proximity to shopping: Rocky Fork State Park provides easy access to nearby supplies. "The near by town of Hillsboro was definitely worth the visit. Several cute stores, a great bakery and we even went to the local farmers market." RVers can easily restock within a short drive of the campground.
