Rock climbing for all levels: The steep cliffs at Pilot Mountain provide excellent climbing opportunities. "I've been here several times, and it's one of my favorite places for toprope climbing in the area. If you're not a climber, the views are still worth the drive," shares DrDavid P. The climbing area is accessible via a trail from the parking lot, with bolted anchors at the top of most routes for easy top roping.
Visit nearby towns: Mount Airy, just 5 miles from Mayberry Campground, offers Andy Griffith-themed attractions. "So much to do in surrounding area, especially if you are a fan of Andy Griffith. The town of Mt. Airy has a variety of fast food places as well as many varied restaurants and BBQ's as well," mentions L T. The camp sites are mostly level, well maintained and have tent pads, tables and fire rings. I chose a site that had water and electric hook-ups. The bathrooms were heated, clean and the men's bathroom had two showers," reports David B. about Stone Mountain State Park Campground.
Road noise: Some glamping locations near highways experience traffic sound. "The campground sits on a hillside with multiple gravel roads. Although the landscaping is nice, there's no trees near any campsites for shade. It's right near the main highway which is convenient, but also noisy," notes Nancy C.
Gate closure timing: Many campgrounds in the area have strict gate schedules. Shannon C. warns, "Also be aware that the campground entrance closes at 10 pm. Platforms for tents: Families with young children might appreciate the raised tent platforms available at some sites. "This was our first time setting up on a platform and it was very easy. Our site had a great view of the beautiful lake. There was a pool our kids could swim in until 7:00pm. "This campground is sloped, with rolling hills, which makes for a nice loop to walk dogs etc. Our tent pad was perfectly flat, and dry and we slept with no fly - which made for a gorgeous morning sunrise!" advises Kirsten J.
Extension cord planning: Power connections may require extra equipment. "I was excited to have a lake view spot with electric but my 25 foot cord was not long enough so make sure you have atleast 50 feet," warns libby M.
Weather readiness: RVers staying near Pilot Mountain should prepare for variable conditions. "We camped at site #5 this time - on the inside of the loop, though we usually prefer perimeter sites. We were excited to get out there and hike in the morning before it was too hot," shares Kirsten J. about Fancy Gap-Blue Ridge Parkway KOA.
