Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Mills River, NC

North Mills River Campground welcomes pets at all campsites with spacious, tree-lined spots providing natural privacy between neighbors. Davidson River and Lake Powhatan campgrounds also accommodate dogs throughout their facilities, requiring pets to remain on leashes no longer than 6 feet when outside vehicles or tents. Asheville West KOA features a dedicated dog park where campers can let their pets off-leash for exercise and socialization. Most campgrounds in the area provide pet waste stations and water access, though pet owners should bring their own bowls and supplies. Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground maintains a small dog park, though some visitors note it has uneven terrain that may challenge older dogs or those with mobility issues.

The Mills River area offers numerous pet-friendly hiking opportunities with North Mills River providing walkways leading directly to the river where dogs can splash and cool off. Campground hosts at several locations deliver firewood and ice directly to campsites, allowing pet owners to remain with their animals rather than leaving them unattended. The nearby Pisgah National Forest trails welcome leashed dogs, providing excellent day-trip options from any Mills River campground. During summer months, the shallow sections of North Mills River create perfect play areas for water-loving dogs. Yellow jackets can be problematic at some campgrounds during late summer and early fall, requiring pet owners to monitor their animals closely for stings or allergic reactions. Most campgrounds enforce quiet hours to minimize barking disruptions.

    Indian Creek Campground

    Creekside Camping

Indian Creek offers the most relaxing creekside camping in North Carolina.

Every campsite is lush with greenery, private and well maintained after each occupancy. The bathhouse is the cleanest I have found and the campsite store carries all of your forgotten necessities, and more!

My husband and I love coming back to this campground, because how of well we and our kids sleep! The sound of the creek at night melts all of your worries away and takes you off to peaceful slumber.

This campground is always in rotation for a visit.

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Adult and Dog campground wonder

From the moment we arrived at the campground the manager "Larry"  ( a workamper) signed us in, show us our site on Wagging Tail Dr.  We arrived on their opening weekend the Owners provided BBQ meal and live music "Jose Wales" band.   It was a wonderful time.  As for the "Dog Retreat part - 18 acres of wonder open areas fenced in to keep you furry friends from running away, there is agility park, puppy park, the main dog park, a private park (single or you can invite), a Lure run, a Ball Park, and a Pond for those watery dogs.

Price for Fire wood - a little expensive and 10 lbs of Ice was reasonable.  There are fully fenced sites, a couple of sites with a fenced area.  The larges rig I saw in there was a Solitude at  38 ft.

Over all, if you want the peace and quiet in the North Carolina foot hills with your furry friend and have a good time.  This is the place to be.

One other note:  It is the only park in NC that is a dedicated dog campground.

    Asheville West KOA

Far enough away to feel like camping and still close to the city

The Asheville KOA is very pet and RV friendly. There are a number of walking trails of easy to moderate difficulty that run throughout the property. The dog park is a great place to let the pups off of the leashes for a bit. Staff pickup trash daily between 10-11AM at your site, but dumpsters are easily accessible.

We camped here in our 22' travel trailer. The back in sites are mostly level with a mix of dirt and gravel. If you're looking for a sunny spot, request one of the even-numbered back-ins. If you would prefer to be mostly in the shade, go for an odd-numbered spot. 20/30/50 amp electric, cable, water and sewer were easily accessible at each site. Camp sites are not very large, so be mindful of volume and lights with respect to your neighbors.

    North Mills River

Spacious group site near the river

This is a great campground next to the beautiful North Mills River. Hosts were very accommodating and delivered ice and firewood for a cheap price upon request. It rained quite heavily during our stay and the hosts made the rounds to make sure we were all right and if we needed anything. There is a walkway on the far end of the site that leads to the North Mills River, great for fishing, tubing, or just listening to the river babble. The private bathroom included on the group site was clean. The other shower/bathroom building that was a 5 minute walk away was exceptionally clean. The group site had ample parking for our three cars. Site also included 4 picnic tables, bear box to store food, water pump, and a fire pit with removable grill grate. Tons of extra space to play frisbee and other games. The campsite is a 25 minute drive from Pisgah National Forest, where we did some great waterfall and landscape hikes.

    The Bike Farm

    Great for any Pisgah adventure

If you’re looking for a paved place to park your 30 foot long fifth wheel this isn’t it. If what you are looking for is a great place to get out in nature and get away from the crowds you’re in the right spot. The staff here are super friendly and always down to give advice about how to experience the area, even if you aren’t on a bike. If you are on a bike there are a few trails right on site and the campground is close to mills river, Pisgah, and DuPont state forest. TLDR: Friendly staff, clean campsites, close to everything.

    Mills River Dispersed

    TEMPORARILY CLOSED APRIL 2025

FYI - this is not showing as closed on NFS site - right after the North Mills River Campground Yellow Gap road is gated and closed due to damage from Helene in Sep 2024.  A call to Pisgah Forest Service office confirmed it may be quite a bit before it is opened up as there are other priority areas they are currently working on.

Four Paws Kingdom Campground & Dog Retreat

    Awesome for dogs and people!

We camped here back in August and had a blast! We brought our two dogs and they also had a great time. This site is very dog friendly (obviously), with many sites having their own fenced in yards. We opted for a site without a fence, which we regretted once we got there. The gravel at our site was painful for our dog’s feet and they had a hard time walking on it. The dog parks made up for this! There are multiple large dog parks located at the campground. The restrooms were awesome, but are single person use only. We felt like we were the only ones using them (that’s how well maintained they were). Campsites are close together but we didn’t mind. The staff was great, they helped us find our site and even helped us back our camper in. There was power and water hookup at each site. There is tons of stuff to do around the area too. Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are right around the corner and SO FUN.

    Bent River Equestrian

Great camping near mountain biking and hiking

Great place to spend a couple of nights. Went over Labor Day weekend with 5 or 6 other groups and still felt like we had full privacy. Fire pits, an outdoor shower, and a porta-potty. Cute horses and barn cats to pet and watch

Guide to Mills River

Pet-friendly camping opportunities abound near Mills River, North Carolina, situated at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 feet in the Pisgah National Forest region. The area receives approximately 47 inches of rainfall annually, creating lush forest conditions that remain relatively cool even in summer months. Seasonal temperature variations can be significant, with winter overnight lows sometimes dropping below freezing even when daytime highs reach the 50s.

What to do

Fly fishing at North Mills River: North Mills River Campground provides direct access to some of the area's premier trout fishing. "We've enjoyed this campground mainly for the fly-fishing. The local Trout Unlimited group has also spent many hours upgrading the walkways and fence lines to protect the river," notes Shannon K. about North Mills River.

Mountain biking from Davidson River: Access the Art Loeb trailhead directly from the campground entrance. "Located right inside Pisgah National forest this campground is perfectly set for all adventures. If you're looking to ride the mtb trails you're in luck. They start literally across the davidson river from the campground," shares Travis S. about Davidson River Campground.

Winter hiking options: Unlike many regional campgrounds that close seasonally, some Mills River area options remain open year-round. "Enjoyed a winter camping trip to this peaceful area," reports Penny C. The reduced crowds and different forest perspective make off-season visits worthwhile for those prepared for cooler temperatures.

What campers like

Lake activities near Asheville: Rutledge Lake RV Resort offers fishing and boating opportunities close to town. "We had spot #10 water front. It had plenty of space for the 5 of us and 2 dogs. Nice gravel level sites," shares Donna H. about Rutledge Lake RV Resort, adding that boat rentals are available when the office is open.

Mountain views from elevated sites: Some campgrounds offer premium spots with panoramic vistas. "We stayed at the premium sites on top. The views are terrific, the sites have adequate space and the campground is very well maintained," reports Randy C. about Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground.

River access for cooling off: Multiple campgrounds feature river frontage with swimming areas. "The sites are spacious and well spaced, offering more privacy than many locations. There are numerous hikes that are on the grounds or just outside," according to Heather C. who stayed at Lake Powhatan.

What you should know

Seasonal campground closures: Not all campgrounds operate year-round. "Only one side of campground is open in winter," notes Julie T. about North Mills River. Research operational dates when planning trips from November through March, as many facilities reduce services or close entirely.

Elevation impacts weather conditions: Mount Pisgah Campground sits at over 5,000 feet, creating unique weather patterns. "While we did hit peak color, I didn't think that the cold front would be as intense. Temperature dropped below freezing and during the night it felt like gale force winds buffeting the GO. Definitely will pick a lower elevation for camping if it's in October!" warns Ted H. about Mount Pisgah Campground.

Limited cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "Limited cell service at the site. Best just up the parkway to the Mt. Pisgah picnic area parking lot," advises Ted H. Many campers report spotty reception throughout the Mills River area, particularly in valleys or densely forested sections.

Tips for camping with families

Greenway access for biking: Wilson's Riverfront RV Park provides direct access to paved paths suitable for children. "I actually loved the location of this campground because the Greenway bike Trail runs right through it," shares Tucker B. about Wilson's Riverfront RV Park.

Kid-friendly water activities: Multiple campsites offer safe water play options for children. "The mountain streams offer fun for kids and kid-wannabes," notes Meridith M. about Davidson River. Shallow sections with gentle current provide natural entertainment, especially during warmer months.

Bathroom facility considerations: Lake Powhatan campground receives high marks for cleanliness. "The showers and bathrooms were very clean. There are numerous hikes that are on the grounds or just outside. The staff was very helpful and friendly," reports Heather C. about Lake Powhatan.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookup availability: Many dog friendly campgrounds near Mills River have restricted hookup options. "No Water/Sewer Hookups on Any Site. Electric Hookup Sites Limited," notes Angela about Davidson River Campground. Reserve well in advance if full hookups are required, as these premium sites book quickly.

Dump station accessibility: Some campgrounds have challenging dump station configurations. "I rated a 4 star because the dump site is very tight, and lacking. That was the only thing on this campground I feel needed some work," shares Amurican L. about Davidson River Campground.

Site selection for privacy: RV sites vary considerably in spacing and privacy. "Some of the internal resort roads are in need of resurfacing, as there are quite a few potholes. There are a few sites along the creek on the back left that are a little wooded and have some separation," advises Ray & Terri F. about Rutledge Lake RV Resort, noting that sites can be as close as 15 feet apart.
