Steep roads are the first thing campers mention about Mama Gertie's Hideaway Campground, and they mean it. The drive up from the entrance gate requires good traction on the way up and reliable brakes on the way down, particularly when pulling a trailer out from the upper mountain sites. That said, reviewers with rigs up to 38 feet have made the climb without issue, and staff have been known to escort arrivals to their sites by golf cart.
The campground splits into two distinct zones. Lower sites sit under a dense tree canopy, giving shade and a degree of privacy despite relatively close spacing between neighbors. Upper, premium sites trade the shade for open sightlines toward Mt. Mitchell and the Blue Ridge range. Those sites have wooden decks with porch swings positioned near the mountain edge, and several include fire pits and grill racks. "Sites, although close together, were clean and neat," notes Rodney C., a sentiment echoed across many reviews. The upper section is fully exposed, so summer campers without built-in shade should plan accordingly.
Facilities are consistently praised. The bathhouses include zero-entry showers, and the laundry room has received specific callouts for cleanliness. Full hookups, including electric, water, and sewer, are available throughout, with a maximum RV length of 60 feet. WiFi is provided, though one reviewer noted the upgraded bandwidth tier delivered speeds well below what was advertised. The campground is gated with keypad access.
A few rules catch some campers off guard: no external shelters or staking into the gravel pads, no leaving dogs unattended in campers, and no portable dog fencing. These restrictions are not always listed prominently before arrival, so it is worth confirming current policies when booking. Reservations are available and pets are permitted on-site. The location in Swannanoa puts campers within easy reach of Asheville and Black Mountain for dining, hiking, and day trips. Campers wanting a different setup can check out campgrounds around Swannanoa, including the nearby Asheville East KOA about two miles down the road.
