"I love taking visitors here in all seasons but in autumn it is exceptional," notes reviewer Amber A., who recommends the scenic trails year-round.
Natural swimming areas: Stony Brook State Park Campground features a unique natural swimming pool carved from the mountain. "This park is beautiful and has a unique swimming area- a 'pool' carved from the mountain! There are lots of paths and picnic areas, as well as beautiful hiking trails and creeks to cool off in," shares Kayti D.
Creek rafting: The waterways near Portageville provide opportunities for water recreation. "One of the coolest things was rafting on the creek! There was also mini golf and multiple playgrounds," writes Stephanie B. about her experience at Woodstream Campsite.

Waterfalls and gorge views: The landscape around Portageville features dramatic gorges and waterfalls. "The gorge trail is very busy but you still can enjoy the beautiful waterfalls along with the gorge formation. We also did the east trail that goes up to the top of the gorge and is also a little further into the woods," explains Verity S. about Stony Brook State Park.
Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds offer stocked ponds for fishing. At The Ridge Campsite, Nick O. notes they have "multiple fishing ponds, swimming pool and playgrounds. They have a nice little store for necessities and a snack shop."
Family activities: Jellystone Park of Western New York provides extensive entertainment options. Kristin B. shares, "Playgrounds, beach, mini-golf, dog park, bounce pillow, basketball, volleyball, movie nights, wagon rides twice a day with Jellystone characters, lots of daily activities, water park, kayaks, SUP's, canoes, LIFEGUARDS!... What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate from May through mid-October. "Stayed at the beginning of the week in the 300 loop. A lot of beautiful campers there, perfect setup. Easy to get a reservation. Staff was great. Tricky roads but hey it's camping," reports Jay about Beaver Meadow Family Campground.
Dog friendly campgrounds near Portageville: Most area campgrounds welcome pets with proper leashing. Camper Frank B. notes at Houghton/Letchworth KOA: "My only complaint would be that the pet rules are not enforced. I would see five dogs from my site and only one was on a leash all the time."
Limited grocery options: The area is rural with minimal shopping. "The town is teeny tiny so no good grocery store around," mentions Kristin B. about the area near Jellystone Park, suggesting campers bring supplies.
