Bluff Camping Area — Fair Haven Beach State Park

This haven is more than fair

Not too far from Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany. Sunsets are amazing. Sandy beach and hilly wooded park. Basic though recently renovated facilities with electricity at a lot of the tent sits. Get a site by the buffs if you have a tent that can take some serious wind (especially in fall). Avoid Drumlin loop, it’s sandier and smaller sites. They have cabins too. Favorite park in the area and they take good care of it.

    Sampson State Park Campground

    Historic Site

Right on the water front of Seneca Lake(a Finger lake in Central NY) It was a Naval training base during WWll. About 45 minutes from Rochester and about hr and half from Syracuse. It has a Naval museum with many authentic items from that era. Very shady and ample bathroom, shower, and water facilities. If you like wild life you may run into some animals that are indigenous to Central/Western NY. There are boating ramps and nice places to fish off a wall, plus a nice public beach fully staffed with life guards. A store and rec center is located at entrance area of camp ground as well as a big playground for the children

    Canandaigua-Rochester KOA

    Camping near Canandaigua, New York

Campers exploring the Canandaigua area discover a delightful mix of lakeside retreats, wooded state parks, and family-friendly RV resorts. Just minutes from downtown, Canandaigua City Park Campground offers easy access to local shops and the lakefront beach, making it a convenient base for those who want town amenities within walking distance. A short drive farther out leads to Keuka Lake State Park Campground and the privately owned Canandaigua-Rochester KOA, both of which feature spacious sites, clean facilities, and excellent opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and fishing on the Finger Lakes. For those seeking a quieter experience, numerous backcountry and dispersed sites are tucked into the surrounding National Forest, where campers can truly unplug—though it’s essential to bring all necessary supplies and practice Leave No Trace principles. Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill and the Stay Bristol Woodlands campground blend rustic charm with modern comforts: well-maintained restrooms, picnic shelters, and on-site hiking trails that wind through hardwood forests and offer scenic overlooks, especially stunning during fall foliage season. Travel logistics are a breeze when visitors prearrange an airport shuttle from Rochester or Syracuse airports, ensuring a smooth transition from plane to campsite. And for adventurers mapping out multiple stops across the Finger Lakes or beyond, reliable multi-city transfers provide comfortable, door-to-door rides—no rental car necessary. With its blend of waterfront sites, wooded hideaways, and nearby attractions—wineries, waterfalls, and historic villages—the Canandaigua region truly has something for every type of camper. Whether pitching a tent under the stars or rolling in with an RV, visitors will find endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Letchworth State Park, NY

Letchworth State Park is known as the Grand Canyon of the East and is located in Mt. Morris New York. My husband and I visited regularly when we lived near Rochester, NY. The park is stunning and is fit for camping whether you’re in a tent, RV or choosing to rent a gorgeous cabin. There are many walking and hiking trails for adventurers of all types. Make sure you bring your camera as the views are all photo worthy. The camping price is right due to the fact that the park is run by the state. A great place to stay especially in the Summer!!

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    30+ years of great memories!

We have camped at Letchworth State Park for nearly 30 years. Recent updates to playground equipment and restroom/shower facilities have brought the amenities into the 21st century. The price is reasonable, and the park is a gem. A couple cons to consider: pets only allowed in three loops. Quite often, pet loop reservations are maxed quickly. There is a two dog limit, which excludes many campers. If you are used to private campgrounds, realize that services are limited here. Mediocre camp store and laundry; both get the job done, but leave a lot to be desired.

Last year I vacationed at this campsite with my husband. We really liked it there, the nature is very beautiful. We got there by renting a car on Rental24h.com and took a tent with us and had a great time

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Good weekend campsite

Not technically in the Finger Lakes but still one of the most beautiful parts of Western New York State. Splurge and eat at the Glen Iris Inn! Great for cycling and hiking but no swimming. I love taking visitors here in all seasons but in autumn it is exceptional. I’ve stayed in a few tent sites and all are wooded and pretty private with your standard basic amenities. This is a popular park so make reservations.

Guide to Rochester

Rochester's pet-friendly campgrounds offer abundant outdoor recreation across varied terrain. The area features glacial lakes, hardwood forests, and river gorges with elevations ranging from 250 to 1,000 feet above sea level. Several campgrounds maintain dog exercise areas and pet-friendly trails that connect directly to campsite loops.

What to do

Golfing near campsites: Genesee Country Campground provides a unique opportunity to combine camping with golfing. One camper noted, "They have golfing here and tent areas back up to the 9th hole (but still separated so you don't feel like you are right on top of it) so you can easily knock around there and do a little golfing too!"

Hiking woodland trails: Monroe County Webster Park features several miles of wooded paths. As one visitor mentioned, "The sites are large and accommodating. It's clean, and that you have more privacy than other sites I've been to." Many trails connect directly to campsites, allowing for immediate access to nature.

Lake Ontario access: Hamlin Beach State Park Campground offers excellent swimming and shoreline exploration. A camper explained, "Great access to the shores of Lake Ontario from campground. Also few mile stretch of beaches. Short but pretty nature trail through the woods opposite the lake as well that goes through hard words and into wetlands."

What campers like

Secluded tent sites: Tent campers particularly appreciate the privacy at certain campgrounds. At Genesee Country Campground, one reviewer shared, "The sites for tents are amazing - so private and pretty. In fact it's so private we were able to set up our own portable toilet and have complete privacy."

Family-oriented activities: Southwoods RV Resort receives consistent praise for its kid-friendly environment. A camper mentioned, "Southwoods is a beautiful campground and accommodates campers of all ages. 2 well kept pools, playgrounds, laundry facilities, mini golf, soccer, basketball. The employees are so helpful and nice!"

Spacious camping loops: Webster Park earns high marks for its layout. As one reviewer explained, "We go to webster park family campground several times a year for the past few years... The small and large trailer sites are distributed around the loop. Nice central playground and bathroom/shower house. There is hiking in the park, lots of nice woods, big field for playing games/sports."

What you should know

Water hook-up logistics: At some campgrounds, water access requires planning. At Webster Park, "The difference is 30a power and no water or sewer, 50a power and water, and 50a power and water/sewer. There is a dump station."

Seasonal timing: Most Rochester area campgrounds operate from May through October. Check specific opening dates as they vary slightly. Webster Park runs "May 1st to October 31st" according to visitor reports.

Cell service considerations: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. One camper at Webster Park noted, "Cell phone coverage is poor by Verizon and T-Mobile, and there is no WiFi, and no camp store (but the town of Webster is nearby)."

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: Choose sites near play areas for convenience with young children. At Webster Park, families recommend, "We stay close to the playground these days in our pop up usually at site 5 so our 5 and 9 year old can walk or ride to campground."

Water activities: Canandaigua-Rochester KOA provides multiple water recreation options. One visitor explained, "We spent father's day weekend at the KOA. Our kids rented cabins and some used tents and others came for the day. The campground has so much to do between swimming, golf, bike and paddle boat rentals."

Dog-friendly trails: Many Rochester campgrounds maintain dedicated paths suitable for pet walking. At Hamlin Beach State Park, visitors note trails "through the woods opposite the lake as well that goes through hard words and into wetlands," offering pet exercise options regardless of weather.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: At some locations, site preparation requires attention. At Red's Twilight on the Erie RV Resort, an RVer reported, "Almost all of the sites are not even close to level. Not a big issue with a fifth wheel but a real hassle with a motorcoach. We changed sites three times and finally resigned ourselves to not being leveled."

Hose length planning: When booking water hookup sites, check connection distances. At Hamlin Beach State Park, a visitor advised, "Sites are electric only but with a 100' hose you can reach a spigot from most any spot to re-fill the camper."

Full hookup availability: Dog-friendly campgrounds with complete utilities can fill quickly. At Southwoods RV Resort, campers appreciate that the park "accommodates campers of all ages" with pet-friendly policies and well-maintained utility connections that work reliably even during peak season.
