Tent camping options within a 20-mile radius of Hempstead, New York are primarily concentrated in nearby county and national recreation areas. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage offers several tent sites set back from common areas, providing privacy not typically found in urban-adjacent campgrounds. Sandy Hook at Gateway National Recreation Area, while technically in New Jersey, provides tent campers with a unique beach camping experience within reasonable driving distance from Hempstead.

Most tent sites require campers to be self-sufficient with essential supplies. Battle Row Campground features well-shaded sites but lacks fire pits—campers must bring their own fire containers to keep flames off the ground. Sandy Hook offers walk-in tent camping only, with gear needing to be transported about a quarter-mile from parking areas using provided wheelbarrows. A recent review noted that "there are 20 tent sites spread across four loops" at Sandy Hook, with some sites featuring wooden shelters covering picnic tables. Both locations provide access to restrooms, though amenities are basic, with limited or no shower facilities available.

Tent campers at these locations enjoy unique access to natural spaces despite their proximity to dense urban areas. According to one visitor, Battle Row is "clean, the bathrooms are well maintained, and there is a playground for kids." The tent sites at Sandy Hook feature fire pits and picnic tables, with metal storage units provided to protect food from wildlife—particularly the raccoons that multiple reviews describe as "numerous and bold." Weekend reservations fill quickly at both locations, especially during summer months. Primitive backcountry tent camping options are more limited near Hempstead, with most visitors needing to travel farther north to find true wilderness tent camping experiences in areas like Harriman State Park, which offers more secluded tent camping opportunities.

      Cheesequake State Park Campground

Park uses county cops to shut down park by 9pm.

On Friday, September 4, 2026, I rented a trailer and brought my family to Cheesequake State Park to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary over the extended Labor Day weekend. Around 9:20 PM—well before the park's designated 10:00 PM quiet hours—we were sitting inside our canopy, playing Jenga, and listening to low background music. Two officers from the Matawan Police Department approached our campsite. They were polite and courteous, simply offering a standard reminder to wrap things up by 10:00 PM. Before they could leave, however, a third, senior officer intervened. Wanting to"show them how it's done," he made the two polite officers return and stand by to watch as he demonstrated how to aggressively harass campers. Flashlight in hand, the senior officer approached with an immediate hostile attitude, treating us like criminals as he demanded to know who rented the site. He began reiterating rules and claimed we had too many vehicles. We had three cars, one belonging to my brother-in-law's girlfriend, who was visiting with her daughter. She had paid the$10 visitor fee at the main office and was instructed by staff to obtain the gate access code from us, the primary renters, if she got locked in. No staff member ever informed her of an 8:00 PM visitor departure deadline, leading us to reasonably assume visitors were permitted until quiet hours began at 10:00 PM. The officer rudely snapped that she had been given wrong information. The senior officer then used profanity in front of three small children, aggressively telling her to ("get her shit and get the fuck out!") in that manner or use profanity, the officer went from hostile to furious. He angrily declared that these were official violations and threatened that he could be issuing us tickets instead. Desperately searching for anything and everything to throw at us, he demanded that we turn off our idling car—which was supplying power to our campsite—and instructed us to make sure the campfire was doused before shutting down for the night. He then proceeded to shine his flashlight into our private setup—including our canopy, tents, and the inside of our trailer—searching for any other possible violation while the two polite officers were forced to watch. What was supposed to be a special 10th wedding anniversary celebration with my family was completely ruined by a senior officer misusing his authority to put on an unnecessary display of intimidation. Worse than just ruining our night, he spent that evening teaching those two police officers how to be bad cops. He corrupted two officers in real time, demonstrating firsthand exactly why most people have lost faith in the police force. The next day we was ready for them. We turned off our lights and  quietly by the fire while they went next door to harass an asian family that had just set up camp and had their leds lights on.

Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park

      Bare bones

No hookups. It was wooded, quiet and dark at night. I used the dump station on my way out. The first time I ever saw a poop fountain. The sewer opening sticks up above ground level. The cover swivels away, so I couldn't put it on top of my hose. And then, when I tried to rinse it, there was nowhere for it to go, because the inlet is elevated.

      Heckscher State Park Campground

      Beginner Camper Friendly

To start, Andrew was phenomenal. I arrived at 6:40 PM and he was able to hook us up with the last campground and was so patient and friendly when answering our questions. Overall staff was great, I saw someone picking up trash after campers checked out. Bathrooms are clean, 1 mile walk from campgrounds to beach area. Very spider and tick heavy if you don’t stay on the walking trail. Campers were very respectful and friendly, overall an amazing first time camping trip. Paid about $32 for a night. Drinking water on site.

      Cheesequake State Park Campground

      Clean and basic

Basic clean older campground. No hookups. Water dump flush toilets and showers available. Very limited on campsites allowing dogs. Nice setting but traffic noise can be heard. Calms down later in evening. Generators ok and our quieter than road noise. Lots of mosquitos and bugs so bring your spray!

Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park

      worst campground

This was by far the worst campground we have ever stayed at. First of all, the campground is basically just a large open field where everyone is on display. There is absolutely no privacy. If that's not enough and you want even more attention, choose a site near the playground, where you'll have a constant audience. The bathrooms were also extremely dirty and poorly maintained, which only added to the overall disappointing experience. The biggest issue, however, is the complete lack of quiet hours enforcement. Until at least 1:00 AM, there were screaming children, loud groups of intoxicated adults, and nonstop noise. It felt more like a chaotic party zone than a campground. There seemed to be no rules, no supervision, and no consideration for people who actually came to relax. The sites farther back in the woods offer a little more privacy, but don't expect peace and quiet there either. This campground may be fine if your goal is to drink and party outdoors, but if you're looking for a relaxing camping experience, I would strongly recommend staying elsewhere. The only positive part of our stay was seeing a few baby deer wandering through the campground. They were adorable and ended up being the highlight of our trip.

      Ward Pound Ridge Reservation

      Secluded sites

Beautiful campsites! Lots of lean to sites with fireplaces in them. You have to go in person to make a reservation and pay. The camp area is beautiful, especially in the fall. Pet friendly and kid friendly with a playground available. Our favorite site is #25. Up a hill, totally private and has a lean-to.

    Guide to Hempstead

Tent camping options near Hempstead, New York center around county and state parks within 1-2 hours of the area. Most sites are seasonal, operating from April through October, though a few remain open year-round. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F during peak camping months, with moderate humidity making early spring and fall ideal for more comfortable camping conditions.

    What to do

Hiking trails: At Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, over 40 miles of trails accommodate various skill levels. "The property and hikes are magical. No car noise or nonsense," notes one visitor. Multiple difficulty levels suit everyone from families to experienced hikers.

Water activities: Watch Hill Fire Island Campground offers direct beach access with swimming opportunities. "Beautiful location steps away from the beach. Listen to the waves crashing as you sleep and stargaze over the clear ocean," reports one camper. Swimming is limited to designated areas with lifeguards present.

Urban exploration: Staten Island campgrounds provide unique historical features. "There are abandoned buildings here and you can do urban exploring," notes one reviewer. Rangers occasionally lead guided treks through these structures, offering educational context about the area's military history.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: The tent sites at Battle Row Campground offer surprising seclusion. "Each site is set back off a common area so there is plenty of privacy," explains one camper. The wooded surroundings create natural barriers between camping areas.

Unique accommodation options: At Mountain Lakes Park, visitors can rent yurts instead of traditional tent sites. "A fun option available at Mountain lakes is to rent a yurt to camp in," notes one reviewer. This provides a middle ground between tent camping and cabin rentals.

Beach proximity: Campers appreciate the quick access to sandy shores. "Short walk to the beach," notes a Sandy Hook visitor. Several campgrounds offer beach access within walking distance, allowing campers to easily split time between wooded sites and shoreline activities.

    What you should know

Wildlife considerations: At Sandy Hook, food storage is a significant concern. "Sites also have metal storage units for locking up foodstuffs to protect them from being pilfered by the numerous and bold raccoons," warns one camper. Several sites require proper food storage containers.

Transportation logistics: At Sandy Hook — Gateway National Recreation Area, "No cars are permitted in the campground, so you will have to lug your gear to your spot so choose wisely," advises a visitor. Some campgrounds provide wheelbarrows to transport equipment from parking areas.

Limited facilities: Many sites have minimal amenities. One visitor to Croton Point Park notes, "Dumpster and water near sites. The site was very loud (dance music) until after 11pm. Quiet time at 10pm." Most campgrounds lack full hookups, with many offering only basic toilets without shower facilities.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Croton Point Park features family-friendly facilities. "There is a playground within sight of our camper," mentions one reviewer. Several campgrounds include playgrounds centrally located near tent sites.

Insect preparation: Watch Hill campers warn about persistent insects. "It was nearly impossible to enjoy ourselves because we were getting attacked by mosquitoes and horseflies the entire weekend," reports one visitor. Bring insect repellent and consider mesh shelters for eating areas.

Educational opportunities: Several parks offer ranger-led programs. "There are park rangers on site and have excellent programs for kids," notes a Watch Hill camper. These structured activities provide learning experiences about local ecosystems and wildlife.

    Tips from RVers

Limited RV accessibility: Many campgrounds near Hempstead restrict RV access or have very few suitable sites. At The Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center, "No RV and campers allowed. The parking for your car is 1/4 mile away but they allow you to unload and give you a wagon to take stuff to your site."

Backup power needs: Most sites lack hookups for RVs. One reviewer at Battle Row notes, "There are lots of RVs but not close to tent sites." When RV spots are available, they typically offer only basic water connections without sewer or reliable electrical service.

Reservation requirements: RV sites fill quickly during peak season. Plan at least 2-3 months in advance for weekend reservations, especially between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Some campgrounds require in-person reservations rather than online booking systems.
