      Gifford Woods State Park Campground

      Gifford woods campground

Nice campground near Killington, VT. Water and dump station. Not for big rigs we have a 21 ft TT. Things were tight but doable. One of the few Vermont state campgrounds that is still open. Most close from second Monday in October until Memorial Day.

      Moose Hillock Camping Resorts

Huge sites but sloped, dirty, and pricey

We spent a long weekend at Moose Hillock in Fort Ann, New York, to visit Lake George. This is a difficult place for me to review. But I’ll do my best to share my experience.

The pool is the main attraction here and probably the largest and most ridiculous I’ve ever seen at a campground. Great for young kids.

      THINGS I LIKED:

      — The sites are enormous and private, probably the biggest sites we’ve ever seen at any campground we’ve stayed at.

      — The mature trees are everywhere, great for privacy.

      — It’s located about 25-minutes to the heart of Lake George. Easy drive away but not in the loud and busy area.

      — The camp store is pretty good and sells snacks, drinks, basic supplies, and souvenirs.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:

      — Our site(# 709) was sloped, so much that even with leveling boards under the rear wheels, rear jacks fully extended and front jacks fully retracted, we couldn’t level. That’s annoying and so easily fixed by a campground this size with this array of equipment and resources.

      — Except for the entry roads, the rest of the park is gravel and dirt, which was extremely dusty. Our vehicles and our stuff were instantly covered by this dusty dirt which was a never-ending battle to keep outside.

      — I’m ok paying premium money for a great site, but this site wasn’t matched to the price. I paid$647.38 for 3-nights. That’s$215.79 per night.

      WOULD WE COME BACK?

Probably not. For me, having a level site that’s not covered in dirt and dust is important— especially when it costs$215 per night. There’s a much nicer park about 10-minutes away(closer to Lake George) where we’ve stayed in the past. The sites are smaller, but they’re level.

      Woodford State Park Campground

      Site 73

The campground is secluded and quiet, lots of trees and the pond is pretty. There is a good hike around the pond (2.5 miles or so) with cool pull offs for wildlife spotting (we saw two loons fishing for their baby).

Site 73 itself had the camp beach access which brought some people in close proximity but they were all respectful. The beach is more of a muddy, rocky, bay but shallow enough for wading.

Fire wood seemed expensive for what we got ($9 per bundle).

      Emerald Lake State Park Campground

      Another Vermont State Park Gem!

We love camping in VT State parks and this is another humdinger of a park. Lots of room between sites, well-cared for, walkable to lovely lake… excellent camping experience.

      Crane Pond Dispersed Site

      4th of July

My partner and I went on 4th of July weekend for the first time and was greeted by a man in the parking lot who had been coming there for 40 years. The site was gorgeous with 10 different campsites to choose from. The past reviews are correct with a lifted four wheel drive vehicle being needed for this drive in if you plan on getting paddled boats/kayaks in the water. Our plan was to go in and out to explore but decided to hunker down once we took the road in to avoid driving it multiple times. There are four hike-in camps from the parking lot. All campsites are marked on AllTrails. We stayed on the East side camp, #10, which after setting up and visiting the rest of the sites, had the least views from camp of the water but was the most secluded. Many sites have a privy or a box with a hole and a lid. There were a total of four trucks/jeeps in the lot all weekend and only a few camps being used. The black flies and mosquitos were bad given the time of the year so be prepared if you come during the same time. There are some beautiful trails that connect to the parking lot that lead to other hike-in camps at other small ponds/lakes.

There are green tags on the trees marked next to the water where the camp sites are. We made the mistake of setting up our tent at a makeshift campsite someone made and found the "no camping" sign after and ended up moving. There are beaver, ducks, and loons living at the pond.

    Guide to Fort Ann

The camping sites around Fort Ann sit at the southern edge of the Adirondacks, with elevations ranging from 400-600 feet above sea level. The region has a humid continental climate with warm summers averaging 78-85°F and cold winters that drop below freezing. Sites here typically feature sandy or wooded terrain with many positioned near flowing rivers, natural lakes, and stream outlets.

    What to do

Hiking trails nearby: The Inman Pond Trail provides an easy outdoor activity option approximately 15 minutes north of Moose Hillock Camping Resorts. One camper described it as "a nice easy walk in the woods which takes you to a pretty pond good for fishing and a great place for my dog to swim." Other trails like Pinnacle Trail and Buck Mountain offer more challenging terrain with lake vistas.

Boat rentals and river recreation: Enjoy paddling along the Schroon River at Lake George Riverview Campground where you can rent kayaks and canoes or bring your own equipment. A reviewer noted that "the river is the attraction at this Campground that provides hours of entertainment." The campground includes a convenient boat launch area with a small beach.

Island camping adventures: For a unique experience, boat camping on Long Island Group in Lake George offers complete immersion in nature. A visitor mentioned, "We had a great spot on Long Island! Beautiful view, chill atmosphere, easy boat parking on the slip." Each site includes a platform for a tent and direct water access.

    What campers like

Spacious, private sites: Many campers appreciate the well-designed spaces at campgrounds near Fort Ann. At Lake George RV Park, visitors enjoy "large sites, virtually all blacktop roads, bike trails, dog park, indoor pool, outdoor pool and another (new) water park with zero-entry pool." The sites provide enough space for multiple camping setups.

Clean, modern facilities: Campgrounds in the area maintain high cleanliness standards. One reviewer at Moreau Lake State Park Campground commented, "Bathrooms and Showers are clean. Over 20 miles in hiking trails, this is one of the nicest parks I've visited." The park features updated shower buildings that are maintained daily.

Access to bike trails: The region offers excellent cycling opportunities. At King Phillip's Campground, campers value the convenient bike path location: "We road the bike path each day to and from Lake George. It was downhill on the way there and a little bit of an uphill battle on the way back but totally worth it! Bring your bikes!!"

    What you should know

Site selection matters: Carefully review campground maps when booking. At Rogers Rock Campground, "Look carefully at the map when choosing your site. Many of them are near the main road. Sites aren't particularly level or large." This helps avoid disappointment with location, noise, or space constraints.

Early reservations recommended: Most campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. For popular sites, booking well in advance is necessary, especially for waterfront locations or special accommodation types like yurts. Some locations begin accepting reservations 9 months ahead.

Highway noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience traffic noise from nearby highways. Lake George Campsites sits close to the Northway, where one camper described the experience: "Nice sites, way too close to Northway. I'm longing for home, for peace and quiet...it's hard to have a conversation without the need to shout or repeat what you said over the traffic."

    Tips for camping with families

Yurt camping Fort Ann, New York options: Families seeking comfortable yurt accommodations near Fort Ann should consider Lake George Escape Campground, which offers yurt rentals with modern conveniences. The campground provides numerous activities for children, including "different activities, a waterslide, peddle carts, kayaks and boats for rent, dancing, and teen specific activities too!"

Kid-friendly entertainment: Many campgrounds schedule regular activities for younger visitors. One parent shared that their campground had "family activities each day like limbo, scavenger hunts, movie night at the pool (in summer months) and a great pool to swim in with two water slides."

Beach access considerations: When camping with children, beach access provides hours of entertainment. Rogers Rock Campground features a supervised swimming area where "The beach has a lifeguard to watch over the swimmers. Dogs are not permitted on the beach." Water toys and flotation devices are typically allowed within designated swimming zones.

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling preparation: Many RV sites in the region require leveling equipment. At Moreau Lake State Park, "Our campsite was spacious but required some maneuvering to avoid scraping trees with our RV. Campsites are spacious, shady, and had good separation between the neighboring sites."

Full hookup availability: Several campgrounds in the Fort Ann area provide complete RV services. King Phillip's Campground offers full hookups with cable TV, though one RVer noted, "The site pad was packed gravel and slightly unlevel. We have a 27 foot camper and was slightly difficult to maneuver into the site."

Dump station locations: Not all campgrounds with RV sites have sewer hookups. Rogers Rock provides a sanitary dump station for RVs without direct connections. For extended stays, identify campgrounds with on-site sewer connections or nearby dump facilities to avoid relocation during your stay.
