    Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park

    A hidden gem...

99% off people don't even know this area exists. If you want a quiet piece of beautiful forest to truly rough it and go camping for a few days, then this is what you have been looking for. Less then 10 min drive from town, but hiking in and finding a suitable place to make camp has the feeling of the wild, with the safety of having full cell service. There is plenty of trails to explore and wildlife to enjoy, especially since these over 900 acres also back up to another huge plot of protected forests. Please enjoy Mother Nature's healing love, and leave the area cleaner than when you arrived. Always let someone know where you are headed and when you plan to return.

    Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed

A place to sleep near the gunks

This isn't a fancy campsite and has no amenities. There is a small(10 car) parking lot and a trail that runs thru 80 acres of forest. Camping is allowed anywhere 150ft from the trail. Normal LNT rules apply. Bugs are relentless. Many climbers stay there for access to the gunks.

    Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed

    Pretty cool

If you like dispersed camping, like me- this place is good. There are absolutely no amenities whatsoever & barely even a signal here, but it’s quiet & off the beaten path. The parking lot only holds about 4-5 cars, 6 if you park real tight. There’s no spectacular mountain views from above, but rather a quiet peaceful wooded area & although I only seen/stayed at one camping spot which is literally at about the required 150ft from the road, you can set up your own camp anywhere. I was the only one here & it was a very peaceful & relaxing night

The climbing areas feature various difficulty ratings suitable for beginners through experienced climbers, with approaches ranging from 20-45 minutes from camping areas.

What campers like

Accessible wilderness: Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park provides a remote experience with surprising convenience. One camper shared, "Less then 10 min drive from town, but hiking in and finding a suitable place to make camp has the feeling of the wild, with the safety of having full cell service."

Minimal crowds: The dispersed nature of these sites means solitude is often possible even on weekends. A visitor at Hemlock Ridge described, "I was the only one here & it was a very peaceful & relaxing night." Weekday camping virtually guarantees privacy at both locations.

Free camping option: Both areas offer no-cost dispersed camping without reservations, making them valuable resources for budget travelers seeking free camping near Bedford Hills, New York. Sites remain available on a first-come basis year-round, though parking limitations can affect access during peak seasons.

What you should know

Limited parking capacity: Arrive early during peak periods to secure parking. One camper noted about Hemlock Ridge, "The parking lot only holds about 4-5 cars, 6 if you park real tight." Overflow parking is not available, and roadside parking is prohibited near trailheads.

Primitive conditions: These areas provide true backcountry experiences. A Hemlock Ridge visitor remarked, "This isn't a fancy campsite and has no amenities. Tips for camping with families

Starting point selection: For families with younger children, choose sites closer to parking areas. The 150-foot minimum distance from trails still applies, but minimizing hiking distances with gear makes the experience more manageable for families.

Bug protection: Insect populations can be significant, especially in warmer months. As one camper at Hemlock Ridge warned, "Bugs are relentless." Bring appropriate repellent and consider screened shelters for meal preparation and evening activities.

Navigation tools: Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park has multiple unmarked trails. A visitor recommended, "Always let someone know where you are headed and when you plan to return." Download offline maps before arrival as many trail junctions lack clear markers.

Tips from RVers

Alternative options: For RVers seeking no-cost camping near Bedford Hills, consider authorized roadside rest areas for overnight stays. These typically permit 8-hour parking without hookups as temporary stops rather than destination camping.

Access considerations: Taconic Hereford can be reached via narrow access roads that present challenges for larger vehicles. One visitor described it as "easy to find and access" for passenger vehicles but noted the limited turning radius making it unsuitable for trailers or motorhomes.
