The Amsterdam area sits on the northern edge of New York's Mohawk Valley, offering camping access points to both southern Adirondack foothills and riverfront locations along the Mohawk River. With elevations ranging from 270 feet near the riverfront to over 1,000 feet in the surrounding hills, campers experience varied terrain within short driving distances. Summer temperatures typically reach 80-85°F during day with cooler evenings around 60°F, while spring and fall camping requires additional layers for temperature drops into the 40s.
What to do
Archery practice: Lake George Escape Campground offers archery activities popular with visitors. "There are SO MANY activities in this area. Archery was awesome!" noted Kimberly S., making this an excellent option for trying a new outdoor skill.
Waterfront recreation: Alpine Lake RV Resort provides lake-based activities including paddleboarding and kayaking. "Bring your boats and SUP boards for lots of fun! Staff is friendly and helpful. Grounds are large and well maintained. Hikers and water enthusiasts will live this place!" shares Deb V.
Dog park facilities: For campers traveling with pets, Lake George RV Park offers an exceptional dog area. "Our favorite part was the dog park. What campers like
Level sites: Arrowhead Marina & RV Park receives high marks for site quality. "Our site was back-in and had plenty of space. There's a lot of green space in this campground and it's right on the river. We were next to a little fenced in area for dogs that our dog loved," reports Tina.
Clean facilities: Ledgeview Village RV Park maintains exceptional cleanliness standards. "Bathrooms very clean. Pool was nice. Campground nice for younger families," notes Lauren. Another camper, Cecilia K., adds, "The pool was very cold but spotless, which was surprising since there's pine trees all around."
Family entertainment: Lake George Escape Campground offers numerous activities beyond just camping. "Great Camper camp ground! This place is great for families, it has different activities, a waterslide, peddle carts, kayaks and boats for rent, dancing, and teen specific activities too!" explains Meag F.
What you should know
Site selection considerations: Alpine Lake RV Resort has varied site options but requires careful booking. "Booked an 'Elite 50amp' site but had no realistic map to go by. Many of these types of sites are parallel to the water, but the map makes them look like back in sites. If your site neighbors are in their spots already when you arrive it will probably be hard to navigate unless you have a 20' rig," warns April L.
Accessibility challenges: Some campgrounds have limited accessibility features. At Alpine Lake, one camper noted, "I was hoping to be able to use the bathrooms and showers since I broke my foot...But not only were they yuk there were absolutely no handicap stalls in the closest bathroom."
Trolley transportation: Ledgeview Village RV Park offers a convenient location near Lake George attractions. While not directly on Lake George, this park provides a quiet base for exploring. "Big sites, grounds were very clean, level sites, quiet, staff was very pleasant," notes ERIC C.
Tips for camping with families
Water activities: Lake George Escape Campground offers multiple water options. "Great location with a few pools, arcade room and even some tubing trips! Sites are pretty spacious and encompass that camping feel without roughing it," recommends Meag F.
Entertainment options: Lake George RV Park provides structured entertainment. "Free shows every night at the playhouse kids loved. Animal shows kept daytime events going strong. Water park was great, kids spent all day there," Michael C. reports from their family trip.
Quiet environment: For families seeking a peaceful camping experience, Pine Lake Campground and RV Park offers a more relaxed setting. "This campground has a variety of offering including tent sites and RV, great swimming locations at many of the sites and there is a public beach with life-guards on duty a stones throw away!" shares Kimberly R.
