      Great lodging options and trails!

I've visited the MOC a bunch of times, and have taken training classes here also. There are campsites for tent camping, cabin stays where you can rent a whole cabin or rent a bunk in a cabin with others. There is a store as well as food options. It's a great place to visit whether you grab a meal, a bunk, or just take a hike. The Appalachian Trail crosses through here also.

      Rock Ribs and Ridges 2026

We’re here for the Rock, Ribs, and Ridges festival and what a great experience! Make sure to bring a 50’ power cord as the hook ups are grouped together on telephone poles rather than at each individual site. As far as I know camping is only available during select events.

      Lots to Love Here

We stayed at a tent platform site in Shotwell camping area. The platforms could use a little maintenance as there were a few tie down hooks that were missing or corroded. The campsites are close around this loop that includes lean-tos, but not so close that you are bothered by your neighbors normal sounds. The bathroom is close and clean. There is a bear box at each campsite which gave peace of mind. Firewood is available for sale at the park office. The staff there is very welcoming. Great Jersey getaway with gorgeous hiking trails.

      Liberty Harbor RV Park

Functional with excellent access to the City

Very plain & functional, no frills but right on the harbor & on the very edge of Jersey City, close to a ferry & the train that takes u across to New York City. Shopping & restraunts are right next door. We brought scooters & had a great stay! Plus you can see the Statue of Liberty from there!

      friendly staff at the office

Gave us a welcome folder with lots of helpful info, can walk to get food up the street, short drive to Liberty Park where we got out and walked at night to admire the city skyline and Statue of Liberty at night. They have hook ups and big laundry room.

      Relaxing weekend

There are four campgrounds that are all pretty different, we stayed at Shotwell across from the pond. For the most part, each campsite has its own porta potty or it shared with a couple other sites. At the entrance of the campground, there is a bathhouse with running water, bathrooms, and potable water. We stayed in one of the RV areas across the pond. It was peaceful to hear the frogs chirping at night, but definitely didn’t think about how many more bugs the pond would bring, probably wouldn’t stay at that specific spot again even though it’s really pretty. Most of the campsites were very rocky, but you can find some that have a little bit of grass. We came on a Friday night. Everyone was up pretty late, but was not crazy loud. The rest of the weekend it seemed like everyone’s simmered down. The campground was full of mostly families. If you wanted to shower, you would have to head to the group campsite not too far but you need to drive. We don’t typically expect to have a campgrounds with a ton of amenities. Potable water and a toilet is really all we need. Overall, it was a great time gorgeous park. Also took a few pictures of the cabins in Shotwell. I wouldn’t personally rent one, but I guess if your winter camping it has a little fireplace and will keep you dry and somewhat warm.

      Liberty Harbor RV Park

      Worth it

This is a pricey park, but options are limited. As in almost non existent. This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore. The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8.

Staff is average, as this is not meant to be high end. They are nice but a bit rough. We had some issues with our converter and they wanted to extort a 20% commission to allow our repair man in. A bit of logical conversation put that idea to sleep. Sites kind of level and very close. Power and water, and convenient dump station if staying and needing to dump. The bath house was above average and heated. The laundry was helpful and was acceptable. Having a view of Lady Liberty out your window is priceless.

Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze.

      Stokes State Forest

      Always stoked for Stokes!

Stokes is my go-to state park for unplugging and enjoying time with my family. We brought our son (23 months at time of visit) on his first camping trip this past September. He loved every minute of it.

Site T07 in Lake Ocquittunk is gorgeous and one of the few relatively secluded sites in the campground. You need to carry your gear down a narrow, rocky path that's a little steep near the road, but it's manageable. There's also a graded path into the site adjacent to a neighboring site, but you should check with those campers if they are ok with you cutting through to use it. (We opted not to disturb our neighbors and take the slope.)

I thought I would be able to launch my kayak from site 7 since it's waterfront, but there are a lot of huge rocks in the water that prevent you from getting out into the lake. We had to find a different launch spot. That was probably the biggest disappointment for us.

Still, I love site 7 and it's absolutely worth the privacy and the views every morning.

    Guide to Middletown

Promised Land State Park's Hemlock Hill Equestrian Area provides trail access for horse riders with routes connecting to extensive trail networks. Located in Greentown, Pennsylvania at about 1,800 feet elevation, the area experiences cooler temperatures than Middletown, with summer highs averaging in the 70s-80s°F. The park's bridle paths traverse moderately challenging terrain through mixed hardwood forests, requiring horses accustomed to rocky trails in some sections.

    What to do

Trail riding with elevation changes: The equestrian area connects to trails with varied difficulty levels for different riding experiences. At Stokes State Forest, "There are 21 marked trails that cover over 63 miles within the boundaries of Stokes State Forest. Twelve miles are part of the Appalachian Trail," notes one visitor. Riders can access trails directly from camping areas in both parks.

Lake activities for non-riding days: Alternate between trail riding and water activities. "You can rent kayaks and SUP at the main office," says a visitor to Stokes State Forest. At Pickerel Point Campground, visitors mention "crystal clear" water perfect for cooling off after a day on horseback.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Morning and evening rides offer wildlife spotting chances. One camper at Mohican Outdoor Center mentioned seeing "plenty of fish, snapping turtles, and other wildlife" at nearby water features. These viewing opportunities extend to the bridle paths throughout the equestrian camping areas.

    What campers like

Spacious sites for horse trailers: The equestrian camping area provides room for both camping equipment and horse trailers. A Spruce Run Recreation Area visitor noted, "The sites are large, many have nice mix of sun and shade," which mirrors the spacious layout at Hemlock Hill.

Clean facilities despite heavy use: Bathroom facilities remain well-maintained even during peak season. A visitor to Lower Lake Campground Beechwood Area noted, "Bathrooms were clean and water was hot in the shower," reflecting similar standards across Promised Land State Park's camping areas.

Moderate temperatures: The elevation provides relief from summer heat. "Not too hot during the day and nice and cool overnight," mentioned one Beechwood Area camper, which benefits both horses and riders after active trail days.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements and timing: Book equestrian sites well in advance, especially for holiday weekends. A visitor to Mountainview Campground noted they "just bought a small tear drop trailer and have begun taking it on weekend excursions," highlighting the need to secure spots early since specialty sites fill quickly.

Water access points: Horse watering locations exist along trails, but availability varies seasonally. "Water access for horses is available near the camping area," though riders should identify specific watering points before departing on longer trails.

Trail conditions and hazards: Some trails contain rocky sections requiring appropriate hoof protection. "Some sites may be rocky," requiring appropriate footwear for horses, particularly after rain when terrain becomes slippery.

    Tips for camping with families

Children's activities between rides: Plan alternative activities for younger family members. At Ocquittunk, "The views of the lake are nice, very peaceful," offering fishing and swimming opportunities when not riding.

Choose sites with shade: Select camping spots with natural protection from heat. "Our site was on a hill and most likely not in a flood area," noted one Spruce Run visitor, highlighting the importance of site selection for both comfort and safety.

Proximity to bathrooms: For families with small children, consider sites closer to facilities. "Short walk to bathrooms, showers and lake," mentioned a Lower Lake Campground visitor, which proves helpful for families managing both children and horses.

    Tips from RVers

Power requirements for equestrian setups: Equestrian sites offer both 30-amp and 50-amp service, accommodating various RV needs. At Liberty Harbor RV Park, one visitor mentioned, "The sites had electric and water," similar to the hookup options available at Hemlock Hill's equestrian area.

Leveling challenges: Prepare for potentially uneven sites. "Only downside was fire pit area was very un-level for camping chairs," noted one Beechwood camper, an issue that can affect both camping comfort and trailer positioning.

Tank filling protocols: Water hookups are available, but dump station procedures require planning. "They do a great job of mowing the grass on the sites," shared a Spruce Run visitor, indicating the general maintenance level extends to all facilities including water and sanitation areas.
