Red Lodge KOA accepts pets at all accommodation types including cabins, RV sites, and tent camping areas. The campground features clean bathrooms, showers, a heated pool, and full hookups for RVs. Tent sites on the north side offer river ambience while the south side provides access to the playground for families traveling with pets. Hookups include water, electric, and sewer connections, with both 30-amp and 50-amp service available. "This locale epitomizes wild and scenic:  that endless Montana stratosphere, an exited mountain river, a dark and humongous mountain range (that people are still skiing on in June), low traffic from a dirt"

"We love to be off the beaten path. Right off MT- 135. It is a one way road. Entrance on one end and exit on the other. The road is dirt, so go slow."

    Basin Campground

    Excellent FS Campground

Basin Campground is just a few miles outside Red Lodge, Montana at the foot of the Beartooth Mountains. The road in is paved and passes through beautiful elk country and along the West Fork of Rock Creek, a large stream coming out of the mountains. Sites are paved and mostly level and nestled in the pine trees - gorgeous! The camp hosts are fantastic, the vault toilet bathrooms were very clean and there is water available at several pump spigots throughout the campground. The Beartooth Highway is a must when in the area as well as a visit to Red Lodge. We loved it here! P.S. We had no cell coverage with T-Mobile and so-so reception with Starlink due to the tree cover.

    Great two night getaway

Very nice place to camp and take the kids. It’s in the trees and very shady and has a lake close by that is really fun to fish with the kids. The campground is completely paved, has bathrooms, and a hand pump water well. There is no dump station or electricity but there is a free dump station in near by Red Lodge.

    Red Lodge KOA

    Pleasantness Personified

Bright, friendly, family-style situation 10 minutes north of Red Lodge. Responsive and friendly hosts make navigating the COVID pandemic easier. The north tentsite side has the benefit of river ambience, while the south side has the kid playground amenities. They were renovating the pool as of early June but looked to be making good progress. Easy to find, glorious hikes around Red Lodge, which boasts the Beartooth Mountains, home of ski runs going 9-10 months of the year (including now) and one of the nation’s highest passes. I never give 5 stars unless there is spectacular scenery in or right around a campsite, and I didn’t see them enforcing quiet hour (although it wasn’t a big deal). A good value, all things considered.

    Park Side Campground

    Gorgeous getaway

Beautiful managed campsite right on the beartooth scenic byway in Montana. No cell service (at all, no matter your provider) but you’re a quick 15 minute drive to the town of Red Lodge with everything you could need.

Perfect amount of tree cover in these campsites with gorgeous views of the Beartooths and scenic hikes every direction. There are three campsites on this main road loop (Greenough, Parkside, and Limber Pine). All have a mix of first come first serve sites and pre-booked sites.

    Pilot Creek Dispersed Camping

Open or Wooded — Your Choice

Like most people, we had hoped to stay across the street along the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River. That area has 2 pretty shaded spots, and both were taken. We headed over to Pilot and we were pleasantly surprised. Yes, there is a big open area with little privacy if it is crowded. But it’s great for groups and perfect for solar and cattle watching (our dog loves to watch cows). But there are at least half a dozen wooded spots, setback. Three have bear boxes and are right by a hiking trail. Add to this the beautiful mountains, ease of access to Yellowstone or Red Lodge, and a clean vault toilet and we would stay again.

Guide to Red Lodge

Campgrounds near Red Lodge offer access to the Beartooth Mountains with elevations ranging from 5,500 feet in town to over 12,000 feet in the nearby peaks. The camping season typically runs from mid-May through September, with July and August providing the most reliable weather. Forest Service campgrounds near Red Lodge generally don't offer shower facilities but provide vault toilets and bear boxes for food storage.

What to do

Fishing at waterfront sites: Basin Campground provides excellent access to Rock Creek for anglers. "Waterfront sites right on Rock Creek. Great fishing area makes this site ideal for anglers or anyone that enjoys being right on the water with a stunning view," notes Kayko S. from Basin Campground.

Hiking to mountain lakes: Several trails near Red Lodge lead to alpine lakes. "We used this as a base camp for heading up to Lower and Upper Timberline Lakes last year and were delighted by the quality of the sites. While staying here it's also a good idea to head up and over Beartooth Pass if you haven't already by going to Yellowstone!" reports Alan B. about Basin Campground.

ATV trail riding: The forest roads provide extensive off-road opportunities. "This is a great area to go out and ride trails for days. The campground is really forested with water running near by. Very peaceful," says Nick P. about Basin Campground.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate well-spaced sites. "The sites were all very far apart from each other," notes Tonya Y. about Basin Campground. "The site was beautiful and very close to the river (the sound was great)."

Clean vault toilets: Despite the primitive setting, bathroom facilities are maintained. "The vault toilets were very clean and there is water available at several pump spigots throughout the campground," reports Bob R. about Basin Campground.

Level camping spots: "Sites are paved and mostly level and nestled in the pine trees - gorgeous!" continues Bob R., noting the quality of the actual camping pads at Basin Campground.

What you should know

Reserve ahead in summer: Popular campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "It was summertime when we came and it was super busy. We had to reserve our spot ahead of time, otherwise we wouldn't have received a spot. Even the 'walk-in' spots were all taken," advises Sasha W. about Basin Campground.

Bring bug spray: Insects can be prevalent near water. "Tons of bugs because it's close to a river. Bring your bug spray!" continues Sasha W.

Cell service varies by location: Connectivity is spotty throughout the area. "We had no cell coverage with T-Mobile and so-so reception with Starlink due to the tree cover," notes Bob R. about Basin. At Horsethief Station Fishing Access Site, Edward R. reports "there is great service with Verizon."

Tips for camping with families

Tent sites with creek access: Perry's RV and Campgrounds offers tent camping along Rock Creek. "The tent sites at the bottom of the hill by the creek are amazing. Makes you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere," says Nick M.

Clean shower facilities: "The bathroom and shower facility is perfect and everything on the site is always well maintained. Have never had a bad experience here, always pleasant," notes Kyla about Perry's RV and Campgrounds.

Playground access for kids: "The camp sites are large and spacious," notes Shannon T. about Parkside Campground. The campground layout works well for families with children who need space to play.

Tips from RVers

RV sites with full hookups: "The hook ups are awesome, heated pool, immaculate facilities, and awesome trail off the CG," says Deb K. about Red Lodge KOA. "Sites were level, patio sites are beautiful and cabins are new or completely refurbished."

Variety of site options: "The north tentsite side has the benefit of river ambience, while the south side has the kid playground amenities," observes Bjorn S. about Red Lodge KOA, noting the differences between camping areas.
