Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Billings, MT

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Yellowstone River RV Park & Campground welcomes campers traveling with pets throughout the year, providing designated tent sites and full hookup RV spaces for those exploring Billings with their animals. The nearby Billings KOA Holiday also accommodates pets with tent camping, RV sites, cabins and glamping options. Both campgrounds maintain clean, well-maintained grounds with access to the Yellowstone River. Tent campers with dogs should note that tent sites at Yellowstone River are situated at the rear of the park, sometimes requiring a longer walk to bathroom facilities. The campground features private bathrooms with excellent water pressure and clean surroundings, making it convenient for pet owners who need to clean up after outdoor adventures with their animals.

Acton Recreation Area offers free camping with pet-friendly policies approximately 25 miles northwest of Billings. This dispersed camping location provides a more rustic experience with toilets and picnic tables but limited amenities. Dogs particularly enjoy the hiking trails and river access points available at these campgrounds. Riverside City Park in Laurel, about 15 miles southwest of Billings, offers another option for pet owners with multiple access types including drive-in and boat-in camping. The campground sits along the river with trash service and toilet facilities. When camping with pets during summer months, owners should be aware of high temperatures and provide adequate shade and water. Most campgrounds in the area enforce standard leash policies and expect owners to clean up after their pets, with occasional wildlife sightings occurring near tent areas.

    Captain Clark

    Nice spot with boat launch

A few miles off of the highway and you will find this nice camping area along the Yellowstone River. Very windy the day we were there, but the campsites were nice with fire rings and the scenery was exceptional. This is close to Pompey’s Pillar(which is currently closed for repair), and the Little Bighorn battlefield. Also not far from Billings.

    Acton Recreation Area

Fabulous free overnight spot close to billings

One of the nicest BLMs if that’s what’s called. 30 min from Billings, easy access, nice gravel even road, well marked entrance and even leveled sites. We got some screaming teenagers passing in the car but soon they stopped. We had a restful night to continue our roadtrip.

True, dispersed camping, No Frills but beautiful

The Custer fishing access site was closed for no reason so I found this spot about 30 miles from billings. Only about seven or eight pull in sights and not very large. I have a 28 ft total length and there were only one or two spots that would work. Only two spots I could find right on the Big Horn river, but a beautiful and Serene location. One Vault toilet and a couple of garbage cans in one locale. No cellular service whatsoever.

    Billings KOA Holiday

Surprisingly nice stay (and those showers!)

We normally avoid KOA campgrounds - preferring to stay away from large campers pushed together. Our experience was not what we expected. We were the only ones in the last loop. With the way our teardrop faced we couldn’t see anyone else. This gave us a small campground feel.

There are lots of activities - from mini-golf to dog park to river access. We took advantage of the amazing showers.

Walking around was a surprise too. We followed a trail by the river and it led around a pond  it was short but away from everything.

    Billings KOA Holiday

    All around great experience

Friendly staff, clean, well maintained grounds, quiet and charming. This place had everything we needed for a few nights of work, rest and play. And to top it off the internet worked great. They have a pool, mini golf, kids play grounds, and an enclosed dog park. The laundry and bathrooms were exceptionally clean and updated. We splurged a little got the deluxe pull through with the swing, patio and fire pit, and saved a little with our AAA membership. And, after having gone through death valley and the High Sierra Valley having the lovely tree coverage was awesome. This camp ground is tucked into a residential area, and far enough off the interstate to not hear the noise, but close enough to town and all the other amenities to make it very convenient. It’s also on the river, but we didn’t have a chance to take advantage of that on this trip. I only gave four stars because we were positioned right behind the maintenance residence and there was a lot of noisy activity coming and going at all hours. I’m not complaining, they did an excellent job of maintaining and I’m sure if we were in any other location on site we’d not been bothered by this at all. We’d definitely stay here again.

Guide to Billings

Camping options near Billings, Montana range from established RV parks to secluded tent sites along the Yellowstone River. The area sits at approximately 3,500 feet elevation with summer temperatures reaching the 90s from June through August. Winter camping remains available at several year-round facilities, though seasonal closures affect dispersed camping areas from November through March.

What to do

Hiking trails: Acton Recreation Area provides multiple trail options about 25 miles northwest of Billings. "This is one of my favorite local riding spots. The trails are well used and vary from flat and easy to moderately difficult. Lots of bicyclers on the trails," notes Kathi F. about the Acton Recreation Area.

Fishing access: Voyagers Rest offers direct river access 30 minutes northeast of Billings. "It is right off the river good fishing lots of frogs!" reports Krista H. about the Voyagers Rest fishing access point.

Swimming opportunities: During hot summer days, nearby lakes provide relief from the heat. "Nice little semi secluded section of beach, soft sand and the water temp was great," shares Austin K. about Cooney State Park's swimming areas.

What campers like

Private bathrooms: The Mountain Range RV Park features newly renovated facilities. "The women's bathroom is brand spanking, new, and really cool looking which tells me this park is just gonna continue to grow and upgrade," writes iris N. about the Mountain Range RV Park.

Quiet riverside settings: Many campers appreciate the peaceful waterfront locations. "We pulled in as evening was coming on, and got one of the last of the spread-out, fairly flat sites. Although near the road, we were also near the river (site 29), and could not hear road noise much above the river water's beautiful noise," explains Andrea B. about Itch-Kep-Pe Park.

Wildlife viewing: Several camping areas offer opportunities to spot local animals. "Had two bucks stroll within 30 yards of the tent area," reports Loren W. about his experience at Yellowstone River RV Park & Campground.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Several campgrounds near Billings fill quickly during peak season. "Reserve the spots ahead on recreation.gov," advises Rita G. about planning trips to Cooney State Park Campground.

Site spacing considerations: Campsites vary significantly in privacy levels. "The sites were way too close together for my liking. There were almost no trees, which meant no privacy from other campers," warns Cullen C. about Cooney State Park Campground.

Road conditions: Access to some campgrounds requires navigating unpaved surfaces. "The road right before getting to the park was washboard like (late Sept. 2024). Can drive quite a ways down but make sure your vehicle has Clearance cause the dirt road gets rough," cautions Darnell C. about access to Acton Recreation Area.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming pools: Billings KOA Holiday offers multiple water activities for kids. "There are lots of activities - from mini-golf to dog park to river access. We took advantage of the amazing showers," shares Art S. about family-friendly amenities at Billings KOA Holiday.

Playground access: Several campgrounds include play areas for children. "This campground does have a boat ramp, a play structure for the kids and a fish cleaning station," notes Ellen L. about facilities at Cooney State Park.

Pet friendly options: Many campgrounds near Billings welcome pets but have specific rules. "Little noise due to its close proximity to I-90. Clean bathrooms with showers. Pool and other fun amenities. Friendly staff...great for just a one night stay," mentions Myrna G. about pet policies at Yellowstone River RV Park & Campground.

Tips from RVers

Electrical hookups: Mountain Range RV Park provides essential services for RVs. "Electric only site is $25, full hookup is $45/$50. Highway noise, but will probably abate at night," advises valerie M.

Length considerations: Some campgrounds have limited big rig access. "We stayed here on our way through in 2019. One night. 37' 5th wheel. Fit with room to spare. Big tree cover. Shaded. Kids loved the pool. Bathrooms are single person and locked/gated. Sites are closer together but roomy," explains Tracy O. about Yellowstone River RV Park & Campground.

Water quality issues: RVers should prepare for local water conditions. "Water was a little hard to get started, but worked," reports Allison W. about water hookups at Mountain Range RV Park.
