Custer National Forest Rattin Campground

Fishing enthusiasts will find Rattin Campground positioned along Rock Creek in Custer National Forest, where the sound of rushing water provides a constant backdrop. This Forest Service campground accommodates RVs up to 30 feet across seven sites, though the layout favors tent campers and smaller rigs. Sites 1, 2, and 3 cluster near the entrance, while sites 6 and 7 sit together further down the road with separate fire rings and picnic tables.

The campground operates as a dead-end access road to private property, generating occasional traffic through the gate at the far end. Each site includes a bear locker, fire ring, and picnic table, with pit toilets that feature motion-activated lighting for nighttime visits. Cell coverage varies significantly by carrier, with AT&T providing minimal service while Verizon users often find no signal at all.

Road conditions can prove challenging, particularly when accessing from the south where bridge outages force longer routes over rough terrain. Scott V. notes that "if your towing a trailer you will have no place to turn around if all spots are full." The campground stays open from mid-May through late September at $18 per night, with reservations available through the Forest Service system.

Campers seeking more developed facilities might consider Sheridan Campground just over a mile north.

Fee Info

The first vehicle is included in the basic fee; A second will be charged an extra $10 fee and collected at the campground, if your site will accomodate it. Firewood bundles can be purchased from the campground host.

Guests frequently mentioned the quiet, clean atmosphere and helpful hosts as major strengths. Several reviews noted the compact site sizes work best for tents and small trailers, with good facilities but limited space.

Great Experience

We had site 1. The sites are close and not too big. Really the site is small. There is one bear locker, fire ring, and picnic table per site. The pit toilets were super clean and had a motion light inside them for night time. I loved hearing the rushing water all night long. The campground is very quiet. We walked the river a bit in the morning before leaving. We had no mosquitoes but when we arrived it was 46 degrees and when we left it was raining. Would stay here again. AT&T had one bar and our Verizon had no service.

Great Campground, Small Scale

This Campground is made for the small guys, Tents and very small Trailers are perfect. Spots 1,2 and 3 are all kind of together when you come in. Then up the road to spot 4 (Host), a little further to 5, and down the road a bit more to 6 and 7 that park next to each other but have isolated tables and fire Rings. Note that if your towing a trailer you will have no place to turn around if all spots are full. This campground is on an access road to private property and does get a little traffic using the gate at the end. during our last visit, the bridge on the south end of Eastside Road was still out and we had to use the bridge at the North end over a VERY Bad road. The awesome Host was very helpful before the trip with road information, and just a great guy to work with.
