With 18 sites scattered across rocky outcroppings and mature forest, Colter Campground operates first-come, first-served from mid-July through early September at $20 per night. The US Forest Service facility sits less than a mile from Cooke City and requires hard-sided camping only due to grizzly activity in the area.
Large, level sites provide good solar access according to multiple campers, though the forest shows extensive mountain pine beetle damage with ongoing dead tree removal operations. "There are great rocky outcroppings covered with mature trees," notes N I., though warns the beetle kill creates hazards for hikers. The campground accommodates RVs up to 60 feet, but recent visitors report tight clearances around 7.5-8 feet wide and 12 feet high between trees, making navigation challenging for larger rigs.
The facility includes bear lockers, potable water, and notably clean vault toilets with decorative touches and lighting. Most campers report no cell service with major carriers. Remote workers have found success with Starlink from certain sites, particularly site 7 which offers reliable connectivity and good afternoon solar positioning.
Campers seeking different amenities might consider Soda Butte Campground, located nearby with a different forest setting.
