    Walnut Grove RV Park

Close to downtown Merriam and KC

My husbands job took us to Merriam Kansas and we needed a place to stay, we made reservations at Walnut Grove. We were surprised to find it in the middle of a neighborhood. The staff were very nice and helped us into our site. The sites were on gravel and very close to each other. Walnut Grove was both short and long term campers. There were no tent sites. We had full hook-ups, cell service, and free wifi. We had a picnic table and fire ring and could purchase firewood at their store.

During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown. The park is in a walnut grove hence its name. They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups. They had a laundry mat and clean showers with good water pressure. There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call. So if you are there in September listen and you will hear them, they love the walnut trees.

    Cozy Corner RV Park

    Cozy location south of Clinton

Nice park that has flat/level sites with 50/30 full hookups. Salt water pool, play ground, camp store with onsite storage available for campers or boats, this is a great place to be if you want to do some fishing or hunting at Truman Lake.

Small pond on site and storm shelter. Cell coverage a bit shaky- park has wifi

Increase in the number of RVers has this place packed so a quick call and reservation to hold the site is recommended

    Great owners

    Peculiar Park Place

    Shakedown with old friends

This is the campground to be at if you are looking for a staging area just south of the KC area with full hookups, level sites and amazing owners.

Recently downsized our rig and selected this location for the initial shakedown. Had an easy to access pull through site that had 50/30 amp access, water and sewer. Nice landscaping, plenty of place to walk.

Accepts cask or check for payments, propane sold on site. Short drive from Flying J and grocery store

    Peculiar Park Place

    Great place!

We enjoyed it here, but it snowed so we didn’t explore the trails while we were there. Our internet worked great through Verizon and ATT, we never tried the park WiFi. Clean laundry facilities, pull through site was a little tight, but worked well. If we’re in the KC area again, we’ll definitely stay there. Only drawback, the target audience is a bit older so no playground or park for kids, but plenty of open grassy areas worked too. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. They do propane refill, which was awesome.

The Great Escape RV and Camp Resort

    Ok, not great

Stopped here for an overnight on our way home to Georgia from Yellowstone. It’s ok for a 1-night stop. I wouldn’t stay more. The sites are level, with long pull-throughs, with full hookups. But there is no shade. Also no store. There is a grill/bar that serves dinner, drinks and appetizers. Pool, playground, dog park, stocked fishing pond, laundry. Bathroom/shower facilities were ok. Several text sites did have shade.

    Basswood Country RV Resort

Clean But Dated With Lots of Long Term Renters

We visited Basswood Country RV Resort in October 2020. All in all our experience was a positive one, but prospective visitors should know that there is a large section of long term renters that you must drive through to get to the short term sites. This gave the impression that this was less a vacation park and more of a trailer park. The facilities were clean, but older. The site we stayed in was large and level.

    Basswood Country RV Resort

A lovely place to get away

We needed a place to stop over and stumbled upon Basswood Resorts on our way back from the Ozarks. What a find! It's located 20 miles north of Kansas City and had full hookups, and even wifi and cable. It was beautiful and well kept. We were lucky enough to get a site across from one of its 5 small lakes. You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish.

There was a store which had a pizza place inside, playgrounds, swimming pool, outdoor games, a game room, volleyball, trails, and even golf carts for rent. Very family friendly place. It also had a fenced dog run which was great for the pups. Wish I would have known about this place when my children were young; they would have loved it.

It was scenic and relaxing and we will definitely stop again.

    Walnut Grove RV Park

    Location = Price

When we began our fulltime journey we stayed at this park for a couple of months and learned a lot about it. The management team was very friendly and would often disclose a lot about what was happening at the park. The park was in need of some improvements but it was clean and nice. The spaces are very tight in the travelers section and more spread out in the long term section. Many sites in the park were occupied by storage and the owners never showed up. To walk your dogs at the little park at night, you had to walk through there area. We called this the storage lot. The out of state contractors often had many loud and drunk guests which was obnoxious. They often harassed females walking their dogs to the park through the narrow street, and they were in the back section.

They had reasonable rates when we first stayed there ($40/night for in the city and $500/month). Now it is much more expensive, one night for our rig is $76 according to their website.

We never felt like it was genuinely part of the RV Community, it was more of a stop through or people were staying in the area for a job or to finish a house. It didn’t house many fulltime RVers that would continue traveling. They love to host NASCAR fans and know they are one of the closest parks to the Speedway.

Ammenities: Laundry Small Store Showers/Restroom Facilities Little dog park on the north end. Occasional BBq They were putting in Google Fiber internet when we stayed there in 2017 so I’m not sure if they completed it. Dump Propane Trash Mail

This location was the closest to our family’s homes so we have stayed there three times all together. There is a lot to do nearby and the main draw of this RV Park is definitely the location. You’re not far from downtown Kansas City, and still in the suburbs of Kansas City.

What to do

Fishing access: Lake Paradise Resort, located 15 miles southeast of Odessa, offers fishing opportunities without requiring a license. "We camped here in September 2020. There are nice spots right by the lakes with big trees for shade. Roads going up higher past us were a little rough but made for great walks with kids. Kids found tons of frogs and snails to play with," notes reviewer Brandi D.

Short drives to attractions: Campus RV Park in Independence positions campers for regional exploration. "Just 30 minutes to downtown Kansas City and maybe 15 minutes to arrowhead stadium, this campground is ideal for being close to everything that Kansas City offers," explains Wendy T. The park includes concrete pads and full hookups.

Movie nights and holiday events: Seasonal activities create social opportunities at some parks. "We went to a movie outside there and fireworks for Memorial Day weekend. The pool was open for the first Saturday but it was rainy and of course cold. It was still so much fun. Can't wait to be back for 4 of July!!" shares erica B. about her experience at Lake Paradise.

What campers like

Market selections: Country Gardens RV Park (also known as Owl Creek Market) receives praise for its store offerings. Kirk H. notes, "Great camp store with selections of sausage and cheese. Also, small selection of wine." Another camper added, "The cheese shop is very well appointed and included some lovely local wines which was a life saver as it was too hot to cook."

Pool facilities: Several campgrounds feature swimming options. At Worlds of Fun Village, "The camp ground pool is huge and fun for the kids on non park days. The campground is all paved and perfect for scooters and bikes for the kids," according to Jennifer H. The park connects directly to the adjacent amusement and water parks.

Affordable rates: Budget-conscious travelers appreciate the value at smaller parks like Mayview RV Park. "Stayed here for 2 weeks, clean cut and straight forward park. Functions like a campsite with a registration box. Can't beat $20 a night for full hookup," reports Rocio C. Another camper confirmed the excellent value: "$20/night including full hookups! Town population only 600."

What you should know

Traffic noise levels: Highway proximity affects some campgrounds more than others. Kris M. observes about Trailside RV Park, "Noise. Mostly from the highway, but also trains and air traffic. Situated between two neighborhoods, the highway, and an RV dealership. Did I mention noise?" Campgrounds further from I-70 generally offer quieter environments.

Site spacing considerations: Many parks feature tight spacing between units. At Country Gardens RV Park, one visitor notes, "I'm not kidding when I say they're narrow." Another shares, "The spaces are very close but all in all good place to stay while passing through."

Seasonal occupancy patterns: Availability varies throughout the year. Worlds of Fun Village operates March 1 through October 30, and summer weekends fill quickly. One visitor advises, "Pay more for the pull through you'll have tons of parking even if your rig is big. Our rig is 44 ft and we parked two 2500's on the pad no problem."

Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Many sites require adjustment. A visitor to Country Gardens RV Park advises, "This was a good overnight stop. It's not the prettiest spot but we got a spot under the trees. Laundry and bathrooms were clean. The road in camp was rough so drive slow."

Connectivity considerations: Internet access varies between rv campgrounds near Odessa. At Walnut Grove RV Park, approximately 40 miles west, "The Wi-Fi is working well as I am working online from this location," according to Bob M. Other travelers report adequate cell service at most parks, though signal strength varies.

Registration procedures: Self-registration systems operate at some locations. Phil R. explains about Mayview RV Park, "Payment is self serve, no reservations. Couldn't get WiFi to work but cell connection (T-Mobile) was fine." This process allows for more flexible arrival times than staffed offices with limited hours.
