The southeastern corner of Mississippi surrounding Richton features a mix of established campgrounds and natural areas within the De Soto National Forest. Turkey Fork Recreation Area, located directly in Richton, offers spacious lakeside camping with both RV and tent sites, while Lake Perry Campground in nearby Beaumont provides year-round access with boat-in options. Campers seeking more developed facilities can find them at Paul B. Johnson State Park Campground near Hattiesburg, approximately 30 miles west of Richton, which includes full hookups, cabins, and glamping accommodations. The region's camping landscape is characterized by pine forests, small lakes, and a combination of federal and state-managed properties.
Most campgrounds in the area maintain clean facilities with varying levels of amenities. According to one visitor at Turkey Fork Recreation Area, "The sites were spaced further apart than many other campgrounds. It was quiet and peaceful with clean, hot showers." Many sites feature water and electric hookups, though sewer connections are less common. Cell service can be limited throughout the region, particularly in more remote forest areas. Weather considerations include hot, humid summers and mild winters, making spring and fall popular camping seasons. Campers should be aware of potential military training noise from nearby Camp Shelby, as noted in several reviews. During hunting season, additional caution is advised when exploring trails and forest areas.
Water access represents a significant draw for campers in the Richton area. Nearly all established campgrounds are situated on or near lakes, with fishing being particularly popular. One reviewer noted that Turkey Fork is "a nice little fishing-focused area within the northern part of the large national forest. The large lake has swimming, fishing, and boating so plan to be on the water all day." While hiking trails exist, they tend to be shorter nature walks rather than extensive trail systems. Campsite privacy varies considerably, with some visitors noting that certain campgrounds have sites too close together while others praise the natural spacing between sites. Most campgrounds receive high ratings for cleanliness and maintenance, though some facilities show their age with older bathhouses and amenities.

Clean and cozy campground. Lots of trees. Cement and gravel sites available. Laundry, restrooms, pool, dog park, and a pond that you can fish in.
This doesn’t exist and looks to be private property
Guys this is just a little small spot right off the highway by an old run-down not even open store. It has maybe 6 spots. It’s definitely not scenic. It looks like a “we need to stop now and not set up anything” kind of place. It looks directly out to hwy 49. Did not stay here just drove past.
There’s only one site big enough for our l shaped canopy tent and since you cannot reserve you have to get there and hope it’s open. For small tents it’s great, but make sure you have an inverter to convert to 110. The sites are also on a hill so almost all the sites are at a slant except the actual small pad area for each site. It would be a really tight fit for even small RVs
The bathrooms are single occupancy and really need updating, but they aren’t “dirty” just old. They are not climate controlled.
For small tents camping and for those very confident in the rv maneuvering skills, this is a little gem. For anything else, you might find yourself in a really tight spot.
This is a beautiful lakeside campground with lots of sites. It’s a larger campground that caters to RVs of all sizes, but is great for tent camping too! They allow tent camping in the “RV pads” but even better is they don’t make you pitch your tent on the concrete or gravel. You can pitch your tent in the grass. They also have a really really nice primitive area without hookups, but has water really close. It’s well maintained and shady all day.
The lake is beautiful. There is fishing and kayaking and boating. They do rent kayaks but idk how much. There are piers to fish off of.
This is a beautifully maintained park, but the BEST part for this tent camping gal? The bath houses ARE CLIMATE CONTROLLED!
To me this is kind of the best of both worlds. Enough nature to not feel like you’re in an rv resort, but all the amenities of one.
Paul B Johnson State Park in South Mississippi has newly renovated the RV campground with full hookups and level concrete pads. Geiger Lake is great for fishing, swimming, boating and all water activities. Plus you’re not far for a drive to the gulf.
Clean air conditioned bathrooms and showers, huge lake for fishing, boating or swimming, very quiet, friendly rangers and host, paved lots are semi-level with some more level than others, full hookups for all spaces, beach area, easy access for any size RV with both pull thru and back in sites.
Campsites located along Geiger Lake. Roads and camp pads are paved. Well spaced camp sites. Premium back in sites # 16 - 19 are directly on the lake and very desirable.
