Best RV Parks & Resorts near Hattiesburg, MS

Several RV parks surround Hattiesburg, Mississippi, offering a range of amenities for motorhome travelers. The Hattiesburg/Okatoma River KOA features 75 sites with full hookups including both 30 and 50 amp electrical service, making it suitable for larger RVs. Paul B. Johnson State Park Campground provides big-rig friendly sites with full hookups overlooking Lake Geiger, though some campers note the sites aren't always level. Shady Cove RV Park on Highway 49 caters specifically to RVs with full hookup sites and is designated as big-rig friendly. Love's RV Hookup offers convenient overnight stays with electric, water, and sewer connections plus the added benefit of an onsite market and propane filling station. "We found an asphalt pad with full hookups overlooking Lake Geiger for our Sprinter Camper van. Friendly staff. Good value," noted one RV camper about their experience at Paul B. Johnson.

Most RV campgrounds in the Hattiesburg area welcome pets and provide standard amenities like showers, restrooms, and trash disposal. Cell service varies by location, with T-Mobile coverage reported as adequate at most parks but sometimes weaker at more rural locations. Reservation policies differ between parks - while the KOA and Paul B. Johnson require advance bookings, some smaller operations like Cullens RV Park operate on a more flexible basis. Dump stations are available at several locations including Paul B. Johnson and Magnolia Sands RV Park (located about 40 miles south in Wiggins). For RVers needing laundry facilities, Love's RV Hookup provides onsite laundry services. The roads leading to most Hattiesburg area RV parks are well-maintained and accessible, though narrow campground roads at Paul B. Johnson can make passing difficult for larger rigs. During summer months, many parks fill quickly, particularly those with lake access, making advance reservations advisable.

    Magnolia Sands RV Park

    Magnolia Sands RV Park, Mississippi

What a great little RV park Magnolia Sands is!! Bridgett and Gary offer a rural setting in southeast Mississippi. 5 miles from Wiggins, Ms. Park has 20 sites with full hook-ups. $24 for 30 amp and $26 per night for 50 amp. Beautiful park amongst the trees with its own pond. Concrete pads are large enough to handle most “big rigs”. Open year round and monthly rates are available. The park is 40 miles north of Gulf Port and Biloxi so finding some Gulf beaches is easy. On site is a laundry, game room, meeting room and bathrooms with showers. Basketball and volleyball areas provide recreational entertainment. A strong WiFi network is available. The nearby town of Wiggins has everything you’ll need! Restaurants, grocery stores and fuel.

If you are looking for a quite, peaceful, no frills spot to stay… I highly recommend Magnolia Sands RV Park! We have already booked our stay to return in March.

Little Black Creek Campground & Park

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hidden Gem — Can’t Believe I’d Never Heard of It!

We just spent the weekend at Little Black Creek Campground in Lumberton, MS, and it absolutely deserves a 5-star review. I live less than 2 hours away and honestly can’t believe I hadn’t discovered this place sooner — it’s a massive, beautifully wooded, and incredibly well-maintained hidden gem.

We stayed at a full hookup RV site and were blown away by how spacious, level, and private it was. Most sites had wooden decks, and many had lake views or direct access, including ours, which had stairs leading right down to the water and a picnic table on a platform. We didn’t see a single “bad” site in the whole park.

The lake is gorgeous, and swimming is allowed! They have kayaks, canoes, jon boats for rent, and even a bait shop onsite. There’s also fishing, hiking trails, disc golf (two full courses!), a general store, multiple bathhouses, and cute tiny cabin rentals for non-RV guests. They even have propane filling, golf cart rentals, and a dump station. It’s a great mix of peaceful nature and plenty to do.

The campground is huge and wooded, with tons of shade and a very peaceful, quiet, and family-friendly atmosphere. There are two beaches — one near the main camp side and another closer to long-term spots and day visitors. We brought our e-bikes and loved riding around the scenic roads and loops.

The bathhouses were older but very clean and air-conditioned, and we felt completely safe the entire time. There’s a gated entrance at night with code access, which is a nice extra touch. The store staff were super friendly and helpful, even giving us some history on the campground. The greeter at the front gate wasn’t the warmest, but that didn’t impact our stay at all.

There’s no Wi-Fi, but T-Mobile worked just enough for us to use a hotspot to stream TV at night. Cell service is limited but manageable.

It’s also very easy to find, just a few minutes off the main road with a gas station and small town nearby, and only about 30 minutes from Hattiesburg.

We will 100% be back and have already told several friends about it. If you’re looking for a peaceful, activity-filled campground that’s off the radar but worth every mile, Little Black Creek is it. Truly one of the best surprises we’ve had camping!

    Turkey Fork Rec Area

    De Soto National Forest

This is a nice little fishing-focused area within the northern part of large national forest. The large lake has swimming, fishing, and boating so plan to be on the water all day. There is a nice shady area along the lake with picnic tables and grills. The hiking trail is very short. We spent half a day here relaxing while on a road trip and the mellow atmosphere was just perfect. Convenient to and from Hattiesburg/rt 59 as well as from Mobile.

Yay: Campground is nice and shady and all the sites are close to the water. Clean with basic facilities. Simple but nice nature setting. Close to trails in the national forest.

Nay: No complaints, but if you don’t have a boat there’s not much to do on site.

Surprise: They stock the lake with fish. Loved walking out onto the pier.

Paul B. Johnson State Park Campground

    Pleasantly surprised

We had the good fortune of finding this gem as an overnight waypoint on a recent trip to Florida. We found an asphalt pad with full hookups overlooking Lake Geiger for our Sprinter Camper van. Friendly staff. Good value. Primitive sites were still closed. The park features the Lake set in a tall pine forest and was near capacity but did not feel crowded or loud. We were only sorry that we did not budget enough time to enjoy all this place has to offer. We will not make that mistake next time!

    Big Creek Water Park

    Great overnight stay

Located between Collins & Laurel MS. Camped here in a camper van while visiting relatives in Laurel. Most sites accommodate big rigs, but there are a few tent sites as well. Popular campground; recommend reservations. We didn't have a reservation, but we were able to camp in site 18. Most sites are large with good separation between them. Wooded, but almost no privacy between sites. Quiet, secure. Good folks running it. We'll maintained grounds. The restroom/shower house was clean. There is a laundry room. Beach at lake. Folks fishing at lake. AT&T service okay. T-Mobile weaker.

    Lake Perry Campground

    Fishing, Fishing, and Fishing

Lake Perry, Beaumont, MS: We stopped for an overnight stay. Worked fine. Most sites have an unhindered view of the lake. Currently, the fallen brown leaves and leafless deciduous trees do not make this campground inviting. I imagine the scenery is much more attractive in spring and into fall. However ,must be gorgeous those two times of year. This is a very old campground. Facilities are old. To Do: Fish and fish. The host, Joey, will go out of his way for you. (Scale 1- bad, 5-Very good

(70 yr olds in 17’ trailer) Overall Rating: 3.5 Price 2023: $ 15 for seniors. Security: No gate Usage during visit: 10% Site Privacy: None Site Spacing: A few sites are closer than desirable. Most are okay. Site surface: Concrete Reservations: First-come, first-serve Campground Noise: Quiet, but one site did not try to control their dachshund’s barking. I hope this isn’t indicative of usual behavior. Road Noise: None Through Traffic in campground: No Electric Hookup: Yes Sewer Hookup: No Dump Station: No Potable Water Available: At site Bathroom: Flush. Very old, but Showers: Very ugly Pull Throughs: No Cell Service (AT&T): Okay Setting: View of lake. Host: Yes Rig Size: A large 5 th wheel had to leave as there was not a site large enough. Our site, #1, was the only site the trailer would have fit.

Little Black Creek Campground & Park

    Peace and Tranquility

Seriously one of the more relaxing parks we've been to in a while. Plenty of space between sites, lots of trees and water views! We were in site 4, which was quite level and easy to back in to. Also had full hookups!!! No loud golf carts this week either! Our site was around 35 dollars a night with taxes. Family and pet friendly.

    Forest County Multi-Purpose Events Center

    quick overnight

Was alright for a quick overnight. Really needs some better maintenance and cleaning especially restrooms. Some “long term” RVs set up, pretty quiet though. Price increased to $25.

    Sleepy Hollow RV Park

    Hidden Gem!

We were evacuated to North LA for hurricane Ida. We wanted to find something closer after the storm passed. Found this place in a Google search and called to check availability. We figured we'd be out of luck being that we were trying to book labor day weekend. Luckily, a couple spots were available for us and our friends. As soon as we pulled in Kim greeted us and escorted us to our site, helped us back in, and made sure all of our plugs and hoses were long enough to reach. She even had extras available to lend us if needed. She made sure we were all settled in and everything was good before leaving. We couldn't have been luckier to have found this great little campground! After being cooped up in the camper and leashed outside, we were able to bring all of our pups to the enclosed dog play area that had a great big shade tree to run and run and run. Poop bags and garbage cans were convenient there and throughout the park. They had a nice little pool. Nothing fancy, but just what the kids needed. It wasn't busy in there so they had free reign to wear themselves out(after being cooped up in the campers too). There was a playground area right there between the pool and dog run. Then right next to there was the bath house and laundry room. The restrooms and showers were always clean, and I like that a code was needed to get in, I felt safe going there at night by myself. Since we were evacuating for much longer than we expected, we needed to do laundry too. 4 washers, 4 dryers. We were all so upset since between the 2 campers we had at least 5 or 6 loads of laundry needing to be done(between dogs and sick kids). We asked Kim about it, and the appliance people were there the very next day to fix all of them. She did say they come out once a week to check them all, but I'm sure she had something to do with their quick arrival. The campground is only a few minutes away from the city. There's walmart, walgreens, multiple grocery stores, dollar stores, and so much more. I was even able to bring our pup to a vet'soffice to get his nails clipped. Since we were there for so long we even found specialty coffee shops, nail shops, and an RV supply store all within about a 10 or so minute drive. They also have great wifi! Many of the spots were cement and beautifully leveled. We met a few really great people there, some that were camping, others that were also evacuated, and a couple that were staying there long term for various reasons. We were so lucky to have found Sleepy Hollow to stay when we needed a place most and we can't go back! Thank you Kim for being so gracious and welcoming!

Guide to Hattiesburg

Camping in the Hattiesburg, Mississippi area ranges from state park facilities to private RV parks located within a 40-mile radius of the city. The region sits at approximately 220 feet above sea level in the Pine Belt of southern Mississippi, characterized by gentle rolling hills and pine forests. Summer temperatures typically reach 90°F with high humidity, while winter overnight temperatures can occasionally drop below freezing.

What to do

Fishing at Geiger Lake: Paul B. Johnson State Park Campground offers fishing opportunities on Geiger Lake with no license required within park boundaries. "There are so many species of birds if you enjoy bird watching like we do. We enjoyed watching geese and ducks on Geiger Lake in the morning," notes one camper.

Disc golf courses: The state park maintains two 18-hole disc golf courses for campers and day visitors. "Located on a massive lake and two 18 hole disc golf courses. We managed to make our way down the weekend of an ice storm and the park rangers made their rounds making sure everybody was okay," reports a visitor.

Walking trails: Several campgrounds offer walking paths through wooded areas. At Hattiesburg / Okatoma River KOA, "There are walking trails that look lovely. The woman who checked us in couldn't have been nicer, as was everyone we encountered at the campground."

Water recreation: Beyond fishing, campers can enjoy swimming and kayaking at select locations. "Start your day by checking in and doing one of the two kayaking trips this place has to offer and end your day by the fire right next to the river. Super beautiful place to stay!" shares one KOA visitor.

What campers like

Lakeside camping: Many campers appreciate waterfront sites around Geiger Lake. "Our site was lakeside on a hill leading down to a pier that jutted into the lake. It also had a grill and wooden picnic table that was movable," reports a visitor to Paul B. Johnson State Park Campground.

Quiet rural settings: The Hattiesburg area offers peaceful campgrounds away from urban noise. At Four Seasons RV Park, "this is a small private campground. Sites were roomy and mgm't was very helpful. They have a nice 'laundry' room and can't beat $1.50/washer & $1.00 for dryer."

Pet-friendly amenities: Several parks provide dedicated spaces for dogs. "We were able to bring all of our pups to the enclosed dog play area that had a great big shade tree to run and run and run. Poop bags and garbage cans were convenient there and throughout the park," notes a camper at Sleepy Hollow RV Park.

Well-maintained facilities: Campers frequently mention clean restrooms and shower facilities. "Beautiful park. Could use just a little more space. Lots of wildlife and amenities. Cabins, laundry, pavilions, pool, propane and store," shares a KOA visitor.

What you should know

Site leveling challenges: Some rv sites near Hattiesburg, Mississippi may require extra equipment for leveling. At Shady Cove RV Park, "The sites were soft/sandy and not very level. My in-laws had their front tires of the RV off the ground after leveling."

Military training noise: Camp Shelby's proximity affects some campgrounds. "Camp Shelby is nearby, so you'll hear various noises from that (not overly distracting but I wish I would have known before arriving)," mentions one Paul B. Johnson camper.

Narrow roads: Several parks have limited road width that can challenge larger rigs. "Lots of turns so go slow and know your rig," advises a visitor to Sleepy Hollow RV Park.

Varied site quality: Older sections may offer different amenities than newer areas. "Lower numbered sites are older with newer sites being those in the 100s. The newer sites are more level and have concrete pads instead of asphalt pavement. However, the views aren't nearly as nice," notes a Paul B. Johnson visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Splash pad access: Family campers should consider parks with water features for summer visits. "There is a splash pad, lake swimming, and several picnic areas near the visitor center that would be awesome for kids and families when the weather is warmer," shares a camper about Mike's Place RV Park.

Basketball and volleyball areas: Some campgrounds offer sports facilities for children and teens. Magnolia Sands RV Park includes "Basketball and volleyball areas provide recreational entertainment. A strong WiFi network is available."

Playground availability: Several campgrounds include playground equipment. "It wasn't busy in there so they had free reign to wear themselves out (after being cooped up in the campers too). There was a playground area right there between the pool and dog run."

Safety features: Parents appreciate secure facilities. "The restrooms and showers were always clean, and I like that a code was needed to get in, I felt safe going there at night by myself," notes a Sleepy Hollow RV Park visitor.

Tips from RVers

Hookup placement: RV campers should note that utility connections vary by site. At Magnolia Sands RV Park, "Concrete pads are large enough to handle most 'big rigs'. Open year round and monthly rates are available. The park is 40 miles north of Gulf Port and Biloxi so finding some Gulf beaches is easy."

Seasonal availability: Many campgrounds with rv sites near Hattiesburg fill quickly in peak seasons. "We were driving our van to the beach with our 5 kids, by 11pm we decided to stop for the night. A very kind human answered when we called, even last minute."

Pull-through options: Some parks reserve sites specifically for temporary visitors. "Mostly filled with full-timers / trade workers they don't do reservations but they do reserve 5 pull thru sites for people passing through."

Connectivity considerations: Working campers should check internet availability. "Convenient stop for an overnight stay. Small park with Full hook-ups just off the highway. Easy in and out. Super nice owner helped us get settled late night," reports a Mike's Place RV Park visitor.
