Rustic cabin rentals near Bloomington include several options with varying amenities and comfort levels. Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins feature four sleeping spots with two bunk beds and two convertible couches, along with electric heating for cooler months. Baker Park Reserve offers cabin accommodations with electricity, picnic tables, and fire rings. Most cabins include basic furnishings like beds, tables, and benches, though cooking facilities are typically limited to outdoor fire rings. Camper cabins at William O'Brien State Park consist of "one room plus an enclosed porch" with "bunk beds and a table with benches," and are "heated and had electricity." "You cannot cook indoors," notes one review.

Reservations for cabin accommodations are essential, particularly during peak seasons. Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins are notoriously difficult to secure, with reviewers noting "it's difficult to get reservations, so I recommend trying to start booking 120 days in advance." Minneapolis Southwest KOA offers cabin rentals from April through October, while Afton State Park and St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park maintain year-round cabin availability. Pet policies vary significantly between locations—Minneapolis Northwest KOA and Rice Creek Campgrounds welcome pets in their cabins, while Whitetail Woods and St. Croix Bluffs explicitly prohibit pets. Cabin styles range from rustic single-room structures to more comfortable accommodations with screened porches and multiple sleeping areas.

Most cabins require visitors to bring their own bedding, towels, and cooking equipment. While electricity is common in cabins throughout the region, kitchen facilities are typically limited to outdoor fire rings with cooking grates. According to reviews, Whitetail Woods cabins allow "a slow cooker and a coffee pot" indoors, but otherwise cooking must be done outside. Water access varies by location and season, with some parks shutting off outdoor water during winter months. Several campgrounds feature on-site stores selling firewood, ice, and basic supplies, though selection is limited. One reviewer mentioned that at Whitetail Woods, "potable water in the bathroom" is available "for washing your dishes in the cabin."

Baker Campground - Baker Park Reserve

      First time

We stayed at Baker as a family for our first camping trip, and it was great. Fire pit with swivel grate for cooking, bathrooms, and plenty to explore.

      Minneapolis Southwest KOA

      Basic KOA

Nice quiet campground. It's a very basic KOA. Not a whole lot of amenities. Large playground is quite good for children. Our site is right across from the campground.

Campsite is in the middle of nature. Lots of trees cover. Not much of a breeze but well protected.

Water is clean, electrical boxes are in good condition.

      River Terrace Park

love the river views and shade

Needs alot of updates, old facility with no amenities. Shower water, barely warm, sign on mens bathroom says, bring your own toilet paper. For most part the park is quiet, shady, but again could use some improvements. There are 3 long pull-thru sites for overnight stops

      Roberds Lake Resort and Campground

      Clean and quaint

As a newer resident on Roberds Lake I decided to walk my son in his stroller down to the resort. It looked like a tropical paradise. The water is treated, there were tons of kids splashing around, his age.. It was the hottest day this year so far. It was packed! Lots of welcoming smiles on the beach...I saw the sign saying "Public Not Allowed." I was like aw that's disappointing ,and I understand completeley, why they do this.  I have worked in the food and bev/entertainment industry for all of my life. Im 44...

I went into the little eatery to ask permission from what appeared to be the owner or manager. I asked her and she replied with " NO!" in the rudest way you could say it, and pointed her finger at the door....I mean, come on. Im my opinion, I think she could have handled it a little more professionally and suggest somewhere else, offer a cup of ice water, anything kind....no. All she was, was straight up cruel and I had to rush the first 2 blocks before I lost it. My son, didn't make a peep..anyways. . .I dont like saying negative things about people but in the case, I cant hold back. If you cant be kind and hospitable to EVERYONE that walks in that door, find a new profession like a prison guard or something....

Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park

Top notch for a county park

I’m still a little miffed that this was a county campground—it’s better than some state (non-MN) campgrounds I’ve been to. Unfortunately I only had one quick night here, but it was a quiet, relaxing stay.

There is a dump station and playground, but I didn’t come across a bathhouse when walking the inner campground loop—it’s likely I just missed it. I had poor cell service with Verizon, but it was good enough to text although web browsing was a bit slow. Be aware there is also an additional $7/day vehicle fee required upon entry, which is not included in the price of your campsite. It can be paid at the visitors center and I believe there is a kiosk if you arrive after hours.

My only complaint was the 5 piles of very large dog excrement in my campsite, which says more about the previous campers, but it was prevalent enough that I found myself wishing the park staff had cleaned it up.

Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park Campground

The Bertram Park pass was an asshole

Me and my nephew came to camp at Bertram Park in Monticello and the boss came up to him and was being an ass telling him that he can’t ride his dirtbike that has the battery in it and he said it in a mean way and he said if he catches him again, he will kick us out of the park. I don’t recommend coming here. The bus could’ve been a lot nicer about it.

    Guide to Bloomington

Cabin camping near Bloomington, Minnesota operates on a reservation system typically opening 120 days in advance. The region experiences harsh winters with temperatures often below freezing from November through March, while summer brings humidity levels that can exceed 70%. Most rustic cabins in the area remain heated year-round with temperatures maintained around 58 degrees, though water access varies seasonally.

    What to do

Explore riverside trails: William O'Brien State Park Campground offers diverse landscapes for day hiking. "We loved the trails. It was easy to takes hikes of varying lengths. There were so many different kinds of birds, and the wildflowers were blooming and ferns were unfurling -so many shades of green!" reports one visitor who appreciated the variety of natural settings.

Visit water parks and amenities: Bunker Hills Regional Park features additional recreational facilities beyond camping. "Huge waterpark, miles of bike trails," notes one reviewer. Another mentions "a golf course, a restaurant is on the grounds, there is a stable with horses/ponies that you can take guided trail rides on," creating multiple activity options during your cabin stay.

Bike through tunnels: William O'Brien State Park Campground connects to regional bike paths. "We bike from St. Paul to William O. It is a nice 40 mile ride mostly on paved or limestone trails," explains one regular visitor. Another winter visitor describes "a railroad that passed above our trail with a beautiful tunnel-overpass" that creates unique landscape features even in colder months.

    What campers like

Shower facilities: Baker Campground - Baker Park Reserve maintains clean facilities. "The bathroom/showers are great," states one visitor, while another notes they are "nice and clean, some of the best I've seen at a campground!" The facilities receive regular maintenance even during busy periods.

Winter camping options: Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins provides comfortable cold-weather accommodations. "The cabins in the woods are great in winter with snow on the pine trees," shares one winter camper. Another notes they have "what seems like full-sized mattress bunk beds built into the wall. Each bunk has its own reading light."

Storage solutions: Cabin designs focus on practical space usage. At Whitetail Woods, "The storage in this place is amazing. Storage under the bed, one counter with ample storage under it, and even the windows are so deep that I was able to store most of my food on the sill," which helps manage gear in limited space.

    What you should know

Cooking restrictions: Cabin rental policies limit indoor cooking options. At Whitetail Woods, "You can use a slow cooker and a coffee pot in the cabin. Otherwise you can cook over the fire as well," explains one camper, highlighting the need to plan meals accordingly.

Reservation challenges: Due to high demand, planning ahead is crucial. For cabins at Rice Creek Campgrounds, availability is limited as "the whole campground was booked up," especially during special events like the State Fair.

Shower water limitations: Hot water can be scarce at some facilities. At Whitetail Woods, "There was maybe 2 minutes of hot water. Basically enough to wash your body quickly," warns one visitor, adding that "The shower room is also set to a cool 58 degrees in the winter."

    Tips for camping with families

Off-peak visits: Afton State Park Campground offers more peaceful experiences midweek. "Weekends have been packed and reservations scarce for months at state parks in Minnesota. Arriving on a Sunday afternoon was a dream—very few people in the campground loop," shares one camper who found greater serenity with this timing strategy.

Activity planning: Prepare indoor entertainment for inclement weather. One visitor at William O'Brien noted, "instead of enjoying marshmallows at our fire pit we watched Netflix on our tablet instead our tent," when outdoor conditions became unpleasant.

Insect preparation: Mosquitoes and flies can be intense in summer months. A visitor to Rice Creek Campgrounds reported, "To not get bite we had to run around like chickens with our heads cut off!" Pack appropriate repellents and protective clothing for summer stays.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection factors: Minneapolis Northwest KOA offers varied campsite privacy levels. "The sites are about as private as the typical state park, so not very, but that is offset by all the other positives this campground has to offer," notes one RVer. For more privacy, another suggests requesting specific sites: "be sure to call the office ahead and let them know that you want a site with trees and not one backing up to the road."

Campground accessibility: Many rustic cabins near Bloomington feature accessibility considerations. One visitor noted that cabins at Whitetail Woods "are accessible for those who need special assistance, which is nice. The only caveat is I don't recall there being an automatic door opener to the cabins."

Seasonal closures: Water systems often shut down during colder months. At Whitetail Woods, "Outside water is shut off during some parts of the year, so bring your own drinking water if you are camping close to/during winter," advises a regular visitor.
