Best Cabin Camping near Minneapolis, MN

Camper cabins near Minneapolis provide heated, electricity-equipped accommodations at locations like William O'Brien State Park and Afton State Park. Most cabins feature bunk beds with mattresses, tables with benches, and screened porches for additional living space. "The camper cabins had electricity and heat, no plumbing. Excellent fire ring for cooking," noted one visitor about Wild River State Park. Baker Park Reserve and Rice Creek Chain of Lakes offer cabin options with varying levels of furnishings, while Minneapolis Northwest KOA provides more amenity-rich cabin experiences with nearby shower facilities.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins feature "four sleeping spots: 2 bunk beds, and 2 couches convert to beds," according to a review, with most cabins accommodating 4-6 people comfortably. Reservations are essential, especially during summer months when bookings fill 120 days in advance. Pet policies vary significantly between locations—Minneapolis Northwest KOA welcomes pets in designated cabins, while many state park cabins prohibit animals inside. Winter cabin camping options include heated units at Whitetail Woods, described by a visitor as "great camper cabins for spring and fall" with reliable heating systems.

Most cabins require visitors to bring their own bedding, pillows, and cooking equipment. Cooking inside cabins is typically prohibited, with outdoor fire rings serving as the primary cooking option. "No cooking is allowed inside the cabins, which can make things rough if the weather isn't cooperating," one camper noted about Whitetail Woods. Basic amenities like picnic tables, fire rings with cooking grates, and access to potable water are standard at most cabin sites. Bathroom facilities range from nearby vault toilets to modern shower buildings, with some locations offering year-round heated restrooms. Firewood is available for purchase at most parks, though prices and availability vary by season.

    Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins

Great camper cabins for spring and fall

Each cabin has four sleeping spots: 2 bunk beds, and the 2 couches convert to beds. There's a heater inside, but no AC, which makes these the most suitable during the spring and fall.

There is a fire ring outside of each cabin, along with a table. No cooking is allowed inside the cabins, which can make things rough if the weather isn't cooperating.

We enjoy hiking around the trails, but we primarily go to decompress, lounge around, and play games, read, etc. There's WiFi available, but depending on which cabin you reserve signal will be took weak for real usage. Same for mobile data -- don't plan on cell service here.

The bathroom facilities are nice. Outside water is shut off during some parts of the year, so bring your own drinking water if you are camping close to/during winter.

Cabins are accessible for those who need special assistance, which is nice. The only caveat is I don't recall there being an automatic door opener to the cabins.

While the cabins are close together, noise is not a factor once you're inside.

It's difficult to get reservations, so I recommend trying to start booking 120 days in advance, which is the farthest out you can reserve. For example, as of this review (early June), all weekends are booked for all cabins.

    William O'Brien State Park Campground

    Camper Cabin

We camped at William O’Brien State Park November 1-4, 2022. We were taking advantage of some unseasonably warm days, and we are so glad we did. This park is beautiful! The trails are well kept and cover woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands. There is a huge beaver lodge that can be seen from one of the trails, and we saw a smaller one from a different trail. We saw an abundance birds while we were there.

We stayed in a camper cabin (‘Vasa’) and enjoyed it. The cabins are one room plus an enclosed porch. Furnishings are bunk beds and a table with benches. The cabin was heated and had electricity. You cannot cook indoors. There is a fire pit and picnic table outside. There are three cabins on a little cul de sac by the Savanna campground. There are two vault toilets near the cabins. The water source was off for the season, but water was available at the park office.

    Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins

    Great Cold Weather Option

Super simple camping cabins. They each have 4 spots and have contactless entry as you get sent a code to use. There is no cooking inside the cabin so you have to use the fire ring outside. Shower facilities are really nice and match the cabins. Plan ahead as these are hard to come by.

    St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park

    Top Shelf

Beautiful, spacious, trees but open. Nice trails, clean restrooms, level sites. No alcohol allowed and no pets! Fire rings, sturdy picnic table. Electric and water.

I made reservations online and when we arrived they said I had reserved a place at Elmo Lake which was 20 miles away. Same 2 county facilities but different campgrounds. Oops my bad. Different addresses!

    Ham Lake Resort

Well Rounded RV Park and Campground

My partner and I scheduled a 3 day / 2 night stay in a new Vintage Cruiser RV for $39.99, in exchange for attending a presentation on private membership.

We checked in Wednesday evening, and the nicest staff I've ever met helped us acclimate to RV living. We are new to this game. They patiently described how to utilize the grey and black water tanks, as well as encouraged us to check-out the canoes, row boats, bikes, horseshoes, ladder golf and many other entertainment items - for FREE!

The map provided was accurate which made locating the cruiser a breeze. There were further instructions inside as well. The RV was immaculate. Provided for our use were all linens (a public very clean bath and shower was just across the road), dish soap, dish towels, paper towels, flat wear, plates, bowls, mugs and pans.

The campground has a couple of ponds, as well as access to Ham Lake where the watercraft is launched. There is a petting arena with goats, ponies, and a llama who gave my partner the stink eye, but fell in love with me rubbing the fence and giving me all googly eyes!

The clubhouse sells bundled wood, ice, snacks, cold drinks, ice cream and provides 24-hour fresh coffee. There is also a small resupply area, and gift shop.

There are pull-through sites, back ups, 50 and 30 amp hook ups, and tent sites, covered pavilions, picnic tables and fire pits.

The campground itself seems remote, secluded and peaceful, however, you are conveniently located to two well-stocked convenience stores, as well as Wal-Mart about 15 minutes away. It's also only about 45 minutes from the Minnesota Twin Cities.

One note: We visited in August and needed gallons of bug spray.

We very much enjoyed our get away!

Baker Campground - Baker Park Reserve

    Great First Time w/Travel Trailer

Clean gravel sites with electric hook up surrounded by well maintained grass, picnic table, and fire pit. Central water spigot and dump station. Great signage throughout. Showers and restrooms available. A couple disc golf baskets, sand volleyball court and well maintained grass fields were available for play. Lake independence is a 5-10 minute walk along a newly paved trail. Lake offers two swimming beaches, a water equipment rental area, new restroom facilities, and a playground that was under construction at this time. Simple online reservation process at $26/night our one night total cost $36.03 all fees included. Morning of our reservation, camp staff called to communicate a change of site due to our reserved site having issues with its electrical. All amenities functioned appropriately. My wife, two young boys, and I had a great first time experience with our Bambi 19CB Airstream!

    Wild River State Park Campground

Wild River State Park Camper Cabin

The camper cabins at Wild River are located just above the St. Croix River. Our cabin seemed to be at a trailhead to the river, which we took advantage of. The camper cabins had electricity and heat, no plumbing. Excellent fire ring for cooking. The park itself has many trails.

    Wild River State Park Campground

One of the better state park campgrounds we've stayed at

We were at site 93. It's a large site with plenty of room for a huge tent or a few tents. It was very buggy so we got a screen tent. Nicely shaded site as well. Not far from the water station and pit toilet. For a bathroom with running water it's a long walk and there's not close parking either. The campground is a long drive into the park from the main entrance. 12x10 screen tent fit easily over the 8' picnic table.

Guide to Minneapolis

Cabin camping near Minneapolis, Minnesota offers visitors access to year-round outdoor recreation within an hour's drive of the metro area. The region features a mix of prairie lands, wooded river valleys, and glacial lakes with elevations ranging from 700-1,100 feet above sea level. Winter cabin temperatures can drop below zero, while summer temperatures typically range from 60-85°F with frequent afternoon thunderstorms.

What to do

Hiking trail networks: Baker Park Reserve provides extensive trail options for day hikers. "The sites are good sized, and the bathroom/showers are great. With great fishing, playground, swimming, and biking trails very nearby, the kids were kept as busy as they wanted to be," notes Bryan S. about the park's activity options.

Beach swimming: St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park offers river access for cooling off. "The beach was very nice to swim in, but was a bit crowded no surprise in mid July," shares Lizzy Z. about the park's summer water options.

Winter cabin activities: William O'Brien State Park maintains winter-accessible trails. "I visited William O'Brien in the middle of February with two college roommates. The moon was very bright that night so visibility was excellent. We walked some trail through a frozen marsh landscape and happened upon a railroad that passed above our trail with a beautiful tunnel-overpass," reports David K.

Wildlife viewing: Bunker Hills Regional Park's diverse habitats support bird watching. "I was immediately enthralled by the scenery as we drove into the park. It truly felt like a state park, and it's definitely bigger than some of them (for instance it is 8x larger than Carley State Park)," notes Krista T.

What campers like

Bathroom facilities: Rice Creek Campgrounds maintains well-serviced bathroom buildings. "Level private sites, lots of trees, Showers were clean. Would definitely camp again," writes Corey P. Many campers appreciate accessible facilities when staying in non-plumbed cabins.

Site spacing: Campers frequently mention the importance of privacy between cabins. "The sites are decently private and there are nice bathrooms/showers. We camped here while our friends used a camper cabin and they loved it too," explains Bryan S. about Bunker Hills Regional Park.

Family entertainment: Minneapolis Southwest KOA provides additional entertainment beyond cabin stays. "The staff is helpful and friendly," notes Sheryl, while another camper mentions "It has a pool that stays open late, and it's got some playgrounds."

Group gathering spaces: Many cabin sites offer communal areas. "Our site has a large picnic shelter with 6 picnic tables two grills and its own volleyball place," describes Lizzy Z. about St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park. The park's group sites accommodate 20-50 campers with ample space.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular cabin sites fill quickly, especially during peak seasons. "The campgrounds are grouped, well maintained, and always have firewood(etc) stocked for their guests," notes Alison O. about Baker Park Reserve.

Seasonal access issues: Some parks close certain areas during construction or seasonal maintenance. "The east part of the park was all closed for construction. Everything on the east side of the highway was closed so we could not hike a lot of the trails or use the beach which was a challenge with kids," Tim mentions about William O'Brien State Park.

Wildlife encounters: Raccoons frequently visit cabin areas. "We had raccoons both nights so be sure to clean and put away food AND garbage before calling it a night," warns Lizzy Z. Another reviewer notes, "Raccoons will visit your site at night. We had everything secured but they still tried and plenty of racket until we chased them away."

Site-specific conditions: Researching individual cabin locations helps avoid disappointment. "Sites that I loved: 3, 8, 10," recommends Krista T. when describing Bunker Hills. Another reviewer notes, "The lower loops are definitely better for tent campers, even though quite a few spots could support an RV."

Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: Choose cabin sites near play areas for convenience. "There is a gorgeous beach area with tables, a pavilion, changing rooms and a well equipped playground," shares Kristin C. about Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park.

Space for multiple activities: Consider how much room your family needs. "It was clean and separated from the other campers. I liked this spot because there is so much space to spread out, we had 5 tents set up and room to spare," reports Lizzy Z. about group sites.

Water access options: Check if beach areas require hiking. "But beach isn't motor vehicle accessible so expect 5-10 min walk. Campgrounds are nearby beach and require further walk," warns Alison about Afton State Park.

Off-season cabin benefits: Winter and shoulder season visits offer different experiences. "I plan on going back to experience the park with more time on my hands in the future," notes David K. about William O'Brien's winter cabin availability.

Tips from RVers

Electric hookup locations: RVers using cabins as supplemental lodging should note electrical options. "The upper loop (sits 45-64) is definitely more geared towards RVs, so not what I would consider an ideal tent site," explains Krista T. when describing Bunker Hills campground layout.

Arrival timing strategies: Late arrivals should plan accordingly. "Easy late check in with campsite hosts. Lots of site options from open field options to pretty tree covered areas," Lynsey M. mentions about Bunker Hills Regional Park.

Weather contingency options: Consider nearby activities during inclement weather. "Nearby horseback riding. Quick trip to Afton for lunch at Afton House Inn. Quick trip to Prescott for bloodies at Muddy Waters," suggests Rikki I., highlighting off-site options when cabin camping conditions aren't ideal.

Water and waste management: Note water fill stations when planning cabin stays. "Water fill stations readily available so we loaded up prior to continuing out west," Lynsey M. points out about facilities important to RVers even when using cabins.
