Tent campgrounds near Alden, Minnesota provide primitive camping options in natural settings with minimal amenities. Rice Lake Wildlife Management Area offers dispersed tent camping with boat access and fishing opportunities, while Rapidan Dam County Park provides more established tent sites along a river approximately 40 miles southeast of Alden. Iowa Lake County Campground sits just across the state border, offering another tent-friendly option with basic facilities.

Most tent sites in the area feature basic accommodations suited for self-sufficient campers. At Rice Lake Wildlife Management Area, campers park in a dirt cul-de-sac with grassy camping areas set into the woods, though privacy can be limited when other campers are present. Rapidan Dam County Park provides more developed sites with fire rings and picnic tables, plus access to vault toilets and water pumps. The park includes numerous tent sites along the river, though vehicle access is restricted to small cars only, making it unsuitable for large vehicles or trailers. Iowa Lake County Campground offers vault toilets and water access, creating a functional primitive tent camping experience.

These tent-only campgrounds provide opportunities for quieter outdoor experiences compared to larger, more developed facilities. Rice Lake features boat launch access and fishing paths, with an observation deck offering scenic views. Rapidan Dam County Park sites are separated by trees, creating natural privacy barriers between campsites. The park's location along a stream makes it suitable for paddleboarding and water activities. A camper noted that Iowa Lake County Campground is "a great little spot to stay bike touring through Iowa" with convenient lake access. Tent campers seeking solitude should consider weekday visits, as weekend crowds can significantly impact the primitive camping experience, particularly at smaller sites like Iowa Lake.

      Worth County Lake Park

Site are first come first reserve. Easy to pull into, large concrete pads. Stationary fire pits with grill grate attached, stationary four bench picnic tables on each site . Very quiet cozy park. Has about 10 rv sites and a few tent sites. Small pond/lake onsite and a river. Large park with some creative equipment.

White Fox Campground — Myre-Big Island State Park

      White Fox

The Nonelectric sites at the White Fox campground were very nice. Great size and mostly private. The electric sites were definitely less private. The showers were clean and the vault toilets actually had a light inside! Trails were very nice.

      Pihls County Park

      Quaint and convenient!

Neat little place right off I 90. We arrived in the dark since we had a flat to fix but happily were still able to download the campground map… Seems like people stay here All year at some of the sites because there are literally decks and gardens attached to some larger campers. Gorgeous mature trees and seems like the campground is well kept outside. The bathrooms are clean but pretty old and guessing that the water is fairly hard from the rust stains in the shower… hot water felt great and no quarters to feed. Definitely bring your flip-flops for the shower the drainage was not great. Would definitely stay here again for the convenience, maybe next time we will get to enjoy the water front area… All the sites were nice and flat and easy to back in with lots of length. We have been towing a 31 foot AIRSTREAM so had no problems whatsoever.

Big Island Campground — Myre-Big Island State Park

      Big Island

Myre Big Island was a peaceful and relaxing campground to visit. The trees are so tall and beautiful. The island had a few trails and a nice view of the lake.

It did rain while I stayed and site 17E floods a bit but dries up when the rain stops so it wasnt a big deal.

      Ochee Yahola

      Nice, private campground

Looks like it has about four sites with grill grates. It has two electrical hook up posts. They are rated for 20 Amps. The toilet situation is the only thing that is a negative. It rained today and the men’s side had standing water through most of the floor. But they are totally serviceable. Overall, I would stay here again.

      Pihls County Park

      Peaceful

We booked site 31 which is directly in the middle of seasonal campers. Not very many people around. Bathrooms are definitely old but clean. I would not waste the extra 10 dollars on a lakeside site (trees blocking view)

      Roberds Lake Resort and Campground

      Clean and quaint

As a newer resident on Roberds Lake I decided to walk my son in his stroller down to the resort. It looked like a tropical paradise. The water is treated, there were tons of kids splashing around, his age.. It was the hottest day this year so far. It was packed! Lots of welcoming smiles on the beach...I saw the sign saying "Public Not Allowed." I was like aw that's disappointing ,and I understand completeley, why they do this.  I have worked in the food and bev/entertainment industry for all of my life. Im 44...

I went into the little eatery to ask permission from what appeared to be the owner or manager. I asked her and she replied with " NO!" in the rudest way you could say it, and pointed her finger at the door....I mean, come on. Im my opinion, I think she could have handled it a little more professionally and suggest somewhere else, offer a cup of ice water, anything kind....no. All she was, was straight up cruel and I had to rush the first 2 blocks before I lost it. My son, didn't make a peep..anyways. . .I dont like saying negative things about people but in the case, I cant hold back. If you cant be kind and hospitable to EVERYONE that walks in that door, find a new profession like a prison guard or something....

    Guide to Alden

Tent camping near Alden, Minnesota offers primitive sites within the prairie pothole region, where shallow wetlands dot the landscape across a mix of public lands. The area sits at approximately 1,250 feet elevation with seasonal temperature swings typical of the Upper Midwest. Summer brings warm days with occasional thunderstorms, while spring camping often requires preparation for muddy conditions, particularly at sites near Rice Lake and Iowa Lake.

    What to do

**Fishing access: The boat launch at Rice Lake Wildlife Management Area provides direct lake entry for anglers seeking northern pike and panfish. "There is a boat launch and paths down each side of the launch you could fish," notes Skip H., who also mentions the "deck to the left, providing a scenic overlook" visible on your way into the camping area.

**Paddle sports: The stream at Rapidan Dam Co Park creates ideal conditions for water activities accessible directly from campsites. According to Nick G., "The river is perfect for paddle boarding," with gentle currents suitable for beginners and moderate skill levels.

**Cycling opportunities: The region offers routes connecting camping areas with nearby towns. Bike G. notes about Rapidan Dam: "Great primitive only sites. Cycling into sites can be difficult because some have lots of sand on the path." Bradley B. specifically recommends Iowa Lake Co Campground as "a great little spot to stay bike touring through Iowa."

    What campers like

**Natural separation: Campsites with tree barriers create privacy between tent spots at Rapidan Dam. Nick G. appreciates that there are "Lots of sites all separated by trees," allowing for more solitude than many primitive camping areas provide.

**Food options: Some camping areas feature unexpected dining amenities within walking distance. Lisa K. notes about Rapidan Dam Co Park: "Restaurant onsite is fantastic," while Skip H. mentions "at the foot of the road in there a small food/ice cream shop with friendly staff."

**Lake proximity: Direct water access ranks high among tent campers' preferences. Bradley B. appreciated that Iowa Lake Co Campground "is right on a lake, has water, and a nice vault toilet," creating an ideal primitive camping experience for tent users.

    What you should know

**Vehicle restrictions: Many tent-only areas have limitations on vehicle size and type. Skip H. specifically warns that Rapidan Dam is "Not trailer friendly. Small vehicles only," making advance planning essential for campers with larger vehicles.

**Seasonal closures: Weather conditions affect accessibility throughout the year. Kent F. reported in July 2024 that Rapidan Dam Co Park was "Closed due to flooding," highlighting the importance of checking current conditions before arrival.

**Site availability: Limited camping spots can create crowding, particularly on weekends. Skip H. observed at Rice Lake that "there aren't many spots to camp" and cautions "if there are other people, that will really complicate your life," particularly for those seeking more isolated tent camping near Alden.

    Tips for camping with families

**Beach access: When camping with children, look for sites with swimming opportunities. At Roberds Lake Resort and Campground, Jaime N. reports "the sunsets were spectacular at the private beach," providing both recreational value and scenic views for family campers.

**Smoke considerations: Campfire smoke can be problematic in certain conditions. Jaime N. notes that at Roberds Lake, "Saturday night had a very thick smoky haze due to the density and humidity," which may affect families with young children or respiratory sensitivities.

**Weekend atmosphere: Some campgrounds transform completely on weekends. Gabbie G. observed at Iowa Lake Co Campground: "There was quite a bit of people when I was there and most of them were rowdy college kids," contrasting sharply with Bradley B.'s experience of being "literally the only one there" during a weekday stay.

    Tips for RVers

**Limited RV suitability: Most tent-focused areas near Alden have significant limitations for larger vehicles. Skip H. notes that while Rice Lake theoretically has "enough room that virtually any size camper could navigate into this spot," the practical reality changes dramatically when other campers arrive.

**Hookup availability: RV camping options remain limited in the immediate Alden area. Roberds Lake Resort offers both electric hookups and sewer hookups according to their amenities list, though Jaime N. cautions that the "Hook ups [are] a bit squished together," requiring careful positioning when setting up.
