White Fox — Myre-Big Island State Park

    Nice state park

This is a rustic state park with limited amenities. There are no water or electric hook ups. However clean water is available in the park. The park does have flush toilets and showers. We found these to be in good condition and clean. The showers had warm water. The water stream is on a timer and so are the lights. The shower stalls are Individual stalls. The interior roads are dirt roads with a few potholes they are very narrow. The camping sites are nice sized and relatively private. There is a gravel pad on each site and some have a tent pad. Each site had a picnic table and a fire ring. There are plenty of walking and biking trails and there are walk-in tent camp sites. However, you cannot see the lake from the campground and there is no access to the lake from the campground. We were able to drive through the campground with our 40 foot fifth wheel. But just barely, be careful!

    Land of Memories Campground

Large park and campground with much to do!

The park here has a Frisbee golf course as well as soccer fields and a trail system that wraps the campground and park. In the campground, the spots are plentiful, especially if you winter camp like I do. There are accommodations for any size camper, including pull through locations for big rigs. This campground offers electric and non electric sites. The spots with the most privacy are here by the river. Other spots inside the park are more exposed. If you kayak, there's also a boat ramp! I'd recommend that anyone looking to visit minneopa come here if you have a large rig. The logistics are far easier here, and you're still close to the bison.

    Peaceful

In the middle of corn and bean fields..very peaceful! Open camp sites some shaded and pull through. Big rig friendly. Pool was closed for repair on our visit but looked like nice sized pool. Staff was welcoming and grounds were clean.  Drive over to Austin and visit the Spam Museum...who knew?

    Camp At The Woods

Nice people and ray is working hard to update!

Ray is a great guy ! He let us come in for a weekend , and let us pick our site on arrival. We had full hook up, but the sewer connection was at the front of the site and was up hill kind of . Nice concrete Pads at the site with fire rings. Mostly seasonal sites and month to month workers in here but would definitely come back if there was an open site

    River View Campground

Our LGBT family wouldn't stay here again

First of all, the good - we appreciated the campground being able to accommodate our last-minute reservation. The bathrooms and showers were small but nice, and my kids liked the playground. Full hookups. They also have a camp store that seemed well-stocked, and an activity room for weekly Bingo, etc.

The bad - while the long term sites were pretty, level, and relatively private, our site was definitely none of those. Very unlevel gravel and mud and very close to our neighbors. We were excited for the laundry room but they had to shut it down because of a leak, and the clothes we did wash didn't seem to come out clean. Finally, our LGBTQ family didn't feel very comfortable because of the amount of conservative paraphernalia displayed by both the owners/staff and some of the other visitors.

Overall, our family wouldn't stay here again.

    Rice County McCullough Park

    Quiet Campground on Nice Lake

Sites were long enough for our 40ft fifth wheel camper plus the truck and we had a large yard. Sites have crushed asphalt base and are decently level. Grounds are well maintained. Two boat/fishing docks, playground, pavilion, and hiking trails for things to do. Price is very reasonable for water and electric hookup. Just be prepared for the bugs!

Red Fox Campground — Minneopa State Park

Nice location for camping and viewing the bison

Nice spot. Quiet during the off-season. The spots are plentiful here given its the off-season, but keep in mind, if you come, the only camping spots available are the ones that have power. The "A" section is closed down, but once the season gets going again, it will open. Camping is nice here. My preference is the "A" leg of the campground as it is more wooded and you're buffered better against other campers. The "B" leg isn't quite as private. Pick the perimeter spots if you don't want a neighbor right on top of you. These spots end in even numbers. The inner camp spots are odd numbers, and they've expanded the amount of spots, so there isn't much privacy. Once the foliage grows in, it might be "ok," but looking at it now during the winter season, there isn't any privacy at all. In the park there are bathrooms and a dump station. Parking over at the trail system, there are also pit toilets and community grills, and picnic tables. It's mostly quiet here with a slight bit of road noise. It's nothing bad, though. Anything from tents to cars to fifth wheels can camp here. Any larger fifth wheel, I believe, would be better suited to the "b" leg for camping. There is power there and spots large enough to accommodate your rig. If you're coming to see the bison, keep in mind that the bison drive is closed Wednesdays! Have fun!

Bison viewing: Located about 45 minutes from Alden, Minneopa State Park features a drive-through bison enclosure. "We pulled in at sunset and saw the bison herd and it was beautiful," notes a visitor to Red Fox Campground. The park maintains approximately 20-40 bison in a 330-acre enclosure.

Hiking trail systems: Several parks offer trail networks for day hiking. At Pilot Knob State Park, "Beautiful campground. Well maintained. Nice facilities. You can't beat this place for the price. Nice hiking trails too," according to one camper's experience.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campground cleanliness ranks high in camper satisfaction. At White Fox — Myre-Big Island State Park, a visitor noted: "This is a rustic state park with limited amenities. There are no water or electric hook ups. However clean water is available in the park. The park does have flush toilets and showers. We found these to be in good condition and clean."

Quiet atmosphere: Many campers appreciate the peaceful settings. Crystal Springs RV Resort receives praise for its tranquil environment: "Very quiet, nice sites. Everyone was very friendly easy to work with. It's meant for adults no park for kids. But everyone was good with our kiddos playing outside."

Wildlife viewing: Animal sightings enhance camping experiences. "My best friend and I camp all the time with our pups! This park was lovely, it's on an island and we had a pretty amazing view!! We did a little hiking and enjoyed the semi empty campground only 10-15 people!! We saw a ton of wild life many many many deer!" shares a camper at Myre-Big Island State Park.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most RV campgrounds near Alden, Minnesota close during winter months. "We spent a few nights here before moving closer into town waiting for Winnebago service. This is primarily a long-term RV site with a few transient sites," reports a visitor to Three Fingers Campground, which operates April 1 to November 1.

Train noise: Some campgrounds have nearby railroad tracks. At Red Fox Campground, a camper advises: "A-loop sites tucked by a railway cliff; trains rumble at night—not everyone's quiet retreat."

Site variations: Campsite quality varies within the same campground. At Pilot Knob State Park, a camper observed: "Not all sites are level, and most do not have delineated parking pads (there is a small pavement indent to show where to access the site)."

Tips for camping with families

Wildlife education: Use wildlife viewing as learning opportunities. At Minneopa State Park, children can observe bison safely: "Herds of ~20–40 bison grace the 330-acre enclosure, accessible via a scenic auto-drive; brings pure awe from safety of your car."

Tips from RVers

Site selection for big rigs: Large RVs require careful site planning. At Oakwood RV Park, a visitor found: "Great campground for our overnight, would be a wonderful extended stay as well. Friendly owners came right up when we pulled in, $35 a night, no cards but check or cash were fine. No Good Sam discount. Easy access off I-35. Guided right into the site, easy hookups."

Utilities and hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement when positioning your RV. One reviewer at Myre-Big Island State Park advised: "The interior roads are dirt roads with a few potholes they are very narrow. The camping sites are nice sized and relatively private. There is a gravel pad on each site and some have a tent pad."

Overnight stopover strategy: Several RV parks serve well for single-night stays. At Green Acres RV Park-Dexter, a traveler reported: "We stopped here on our way across the country. This place is perfect if you're looking for a place to rest and hookup your rig for a night. It also has laundry, which is a nice bonus!"
