Fort Custer Campground at Fort Custer State Recreation Area is a 3,033-acre park located between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. The park features three lakes, the Kalamazoo River, a campground, a swimming beach, boat rentals, more than 25 miles of multi-use trails, paddling and fishing opportunities, second growth forests and remnant areas of prairie. The trail system is popular with mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers and dog sledders. Originally farmland, the area was acquired by the federal government to establish Camp Custer, an induction and military training center for the U.S. Army during WWII. The land was deeded to the State of Michigan under President Nixon's Legacy of Parks in 1971. No alcoholic beverages allowed in park April 1 through Labor Day.

    Bridgman, Michigan

In the southwestern-most corner of Michigan, about 100 miles from Grand Rapids, Warren Dunes State Park is home to 3 miles of sandy beaches and windswept dunes on the shore of Lake Michigan. There are 6 miles of short trails for exploring the area, but the main draws to Warren Dunes camping is soaking up rays on the beach and climbing the dunes. The tallest dune, Tower Hill, rises 260 feet above the lakeshore and offers a panoramic view over the surrounding area. Park guides offer a variety of seasonal nature programs that highlight the area’s flora, fauna and natural features. Alcohol is not permitted on the beach at Warren Dunes, and dogs must remain leashed, and are restricted to certain areas only.

The campground at Warren Dunes is located away from the beach, in a wooded area near the highway. On the upside, there’s plenty of shady trees to take cover under on the warmer, sunnier days; on the downside, there’s plenty of highway noise to distract from the peacefulness. The two camp areas—Modern and Semi-Modern—offer a total of 220 tent and RV sites that vary in size and seclusion. The larger Modern area has restrooms with showers, drinking water and playgrounds for the kids; limited hookup sites are available. This area also has three rustic mini-cabins for rent. The Semi-Modern area is more spartan, with just water and vault toilets. A dump station is located between the two areas. Campsite rates range from $25–$45/night; cabins are $52/night.

    Elkhart Campground

    Worked for Us

We came to Elkhart for a week to have servicing done on our 5th wheel. The campground(CG) was easy to find and pull into just a short drive off the highway. After checking in, we proceeded to pull through site 742 with FHUs. We had a tight turn into the site due to the camper next to us sitting at the back of the site, and a Class A on the other side was close with its awning out. But we were able to get positioned on the site so that we had a few feet of clearance between our bedroom slide and their awning. The regular sites are very close together in this CG. The deluxe sites give you a cement pad and better spacing but are still fairly close together. The utilities were well placed on the pad and the water pressure was good at around 50 psi. We got 4 bars on Verizon but the CG Wifi wasn’t all that great. They have about a 1/4 acre fenced dog area plus there are plenty of areas within the CG to walk your dog including a short trail through the woods at the back of the CG. There’s a small camp store at the check-in office and a decent laundry in Rec Hall 3. Go to the Flippin Cow about 1.5 miles from the campground on Simonton Lake. The Bonnie burger is very good! If you need any obscure RV parts, check out Bontrager's Surplus in White Pigeon MI. This large RV surplus is not too far away and it's worth checking out just to see all the things they have in stock. Overall, this CG met our needs.

    Glamping Weekend 2019

We stayed for a “glamping” weekend in 2019. All women camping weekend... sounded amazing for our group of girls! We had a blast... but not because of Eby Campground. We paid an extra $25 for a wristband that was supposed to allow us into all these great activities including laser tag across the street... except it didn’t! Went to play laser tag... couldn’t because we had on tshirts with the arms cut off. So we were ok with that and were going to run back and change... then it was no the time was up and the group ahead of us wouldn’t be done before the cutoff time. Alright then... so we head to the pizza and wine dinner... except they were out of pizza and there was no wine... there were a couple other things they had planned but didn’t pan out. We were then stalked by the security guy on the golf cart the rest of the night. We were still having fun so we didn’t care about all these things... we went to check out and asked for a refund on the wristband since it was poor planning and not enough information given to the campers about times etc. they refused!! It is a nice campground for the most part with playgrounds and ponds and trails and it was clean but the customer service is seriously lacking.

    AWESOME

So far this is the nicest KOA ever. Beautifully landscaped sites are very, very nice. Many sites with cement patios and grills. There's cabins and yurts too. Nice very busy pool and slide, play areas, walking trail, camp store with hot food. Not far from Lake Michigan and places to buy fresh fruit and veggies. Check it out you'll be happy you did. We were here twice this year!

    Most expensive KOA

Our site was horrid- a full hook up with a fire pit in the mud pond. We had mosquito soup for the rear of our very small campsite. It was a very expensive glorified parking spot, and the tiny pool was packed. There were a ton of kids getting into trouble, just pushing the limits of the staff. We will not return unless it's just for passing through- this was a disappointing staff for sure. They did have brand new yurts. We were next to a run down full time rv, who wasn't there for the weekend. We used their fire pit, since our was in mud and trees.

Nice up and coming campground. New Manager making it a better park

We enjoyed our stay at Bear Cave RV Campground. This Park offers reservations however sites are assigned first come first serve. We had reservations and there were some concerns when we arrived if they had a site large enough to accommodate our rig. We ended up in the loop along the river which was shaded and level. The Park has a new manager, and you can tell she is putting money into this park to make it a nice campground. There are seasonal campers, but all seemed to welcome us transient campers. We would stay again. Although we did not use the Restrooms and Showers were clean. This Park offers many amenities including a pool, clubhouse, boat dock and launch. Interesting History within this park with the Bear Cave and the Tulip Tree. It is close to the Redbud Moto Cross track, Fernwood Botanical Gardens(which offers hiking), in the heart of West Michigan’s Wine Country, Warren Dunes(Lake Michigan), Silver Beach(St. Joseph) swimming, dining, and shopping.

    Great camping experience

After camping in Maryland it was nice to have a large more inviting spot. Perfect for tent camping. Camp store has all you need. The dunes are epic and swimming in Lake Michigan was great. Have returned many times and is our go to park.

    Surprisingly nice beach area.

Fort Custer is a hidden gem in Michigan. Nobody thinks to go camping near Battle Creek, but they really should reconsider!

Never over-crowded, tons of trails, and very nice paddle board, kayak, and canoe rentals! The lake at the state park is outlined by trails and features a small island to paddle around!

    Covert Park Beach & Campground

    Lake Michigan

Cons: The actual campground was disappointing, the map was not true to date and most sites the electrical box and water hook up is on the wrong side of the site.

Bring extra line... we have 50ft hose so we were fine there ( line goes through the middle of the site) and 25ft electrical and had to re adjust the camper a few times so it would reach.

The campground allows anyone to buy daily passes for the beach so the beach can get crowded. Lots of traffic in and out.

Beach is washing away, black sand for most of it, maybe due to storm. Still plenty when we went 7/2020 for kids to play.

Pros: Lake Michigan is right there! We walked down to sunset and it was a 5 min walk max.

I’ll stay at any campground to have Lake Michigan in walking distance

They do have two separate paths to the lake, one stair case (several steps) and other was a flat path 100 yards or so then maybe 10 steps down to beach. The flat path had a lot of traffic from daily users

Play set was ok. One for smaller kids and one for bigger. Slide, few swings, nothing to big.

New wash house, rinse off after lake play.

Seasonal members were very informative and friendly, not so informative in office.

Campground was very quiet at dark.

I will give a 4 because we could walk out of our camper to Lake Michigan, beautiful!

    Our Favorite

We camp here every year with our family since it is perfectly halfway between us, in Michigan, and my family in Chicago. The kids love the activities and the pool and my family who are not necessarily "outdoorsy" love that they can sleep in an air conditioned cabin with cable! This is an amazing campground!

This is a great place to camp with young children, as there are many activities around the camp. It is family owned and operated and you can tell- warm and friendly. If you want to explore, there are six Lake Michigan beaches within 15 minutes, and it's located between South Haven, MI and Saint Joseph, MI.

    3 1/2 star campground

It is a very large older CG with a few upgrades. Clean, with decent amenities. We were placed in the rear section, which was just ok. Site needed leveling, had no shade at all and was close to major hwy. The front and side sites seemed nicer and had ample shade with some concrete sites. Laundry room, pool and bathrooms were very clean. Large dog park, but was far from our site. Was only 25 min from Notre Dame and about an hour from lake Michigan WiFi was great, no cable, but good antenna reception

    We’ve stayed many times...

This is one our top options when camping with tents, pop-up camper, or even cabins when we come to visit South Haven. The spots are great, a little sandy because it is Michigan. Good showers and clean bathrooms. This KOA has always been a reliable camp spot. The South Haven beaches are just a short twenty minute drive away!

Don’t forget to get Sherman’s while you’re there!

    Nice campground

Bear Cave is a nice campground. There is actually a cave in the campground that you can take a tour of while you are here. The campground is on the banks of the St. Joseph River in southwest Michigan. There is also a waterfall right next to the cave. There is a boat launch and a few docks that can be used. The sites are a bit on the smaller side. The only sewer hook-ups are all taken by seasonal campers.

    Beware big rigs

This is a smaller campground with about 20 FHU sites and a few dozen no sewer sites. Like mant TT parks, lots of seasonal residents but unlike many other parks, the full timers are not dismissive of the recreational and nomdic campers. This is a great place to get out of the cities and explore Michigan wine country or the South Bend/Elkhart areas. There are several low hanging branches and many tight sites. Call beforehand if you are 40' or bigger.

Lots to do and super friendly

This was our first outing with our camper. Coloma wasn’t far for us, and it was worth it. Everyone was super helpful when we had questions. They had a hot tub and heated pool. Mini golf and bikes you could rent. The store was nice and lots to offer and the prices were very reasonable. Showers close by. All in all we had a great first experience and would recommend this campground. Very close to Lake Michigan and the beach!

    Great place!

We spent 5 days here in June. The campground is clean, the wi-fi is great. The pool and playground area is nicely laid out. We ordered food from the store and they brought it right to our site. A tornado passed within a mile or so of the campground and the employees were out within minutes to make sure everyone was o.k. The beaches of Lake Michigan are within 15 minutes or so. Be sure to visit the "shoe tree". We will definitely be back!!!

    Clean, Friendly, Wooded, Great Location

Our first trip camping trip to Michigan and we loved Warren Dunes Campground. Although the sites were on the small side, ours was wooded and felt private. The staff was present and friendly. I was amazed at how often the staff was cleaning our bath house! They made a real effort to keep it as nice as possible given the amount of sand people were dragging in. The general store had just about anything you could need and opened early and stayed open late. We will definitely be back!

    Nice......

Nice clean campground......a good place for passing through. Super packed with people but it's the middle of summer in the midwest. The rustic sites were woodsy and secluded enough. Everyone was pretty quite by 10 pm. It's a little pricey compared to other places to camp along lake michigan. The rustic/semi-modern site was $22 a night with an $8 online booking fee plus you have to pay the daily park fee for having your car there.

The beach was clean, hiking trails were maintained, overall good for a quick trip.

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

Nice, but a little behind on trash pickup

Wrapping up our recent tour of Michigan campgrounds, we caught some sun at the beach after a quick sprint up the dunes (actually just the 8-year old climbed to the top - the parents were too hot and tired). Alas, the beach showed heavy use with sand that was just a bit grittier than shores we visited in the northern mitten.

We found a quiet site (168) near a small playground with clean bathrooms and a camp store with a woodsy fun feel selling souvenirs, shirts, snacks, and scooter rentals. Minor concerns were the heavy trash that backed up at the dumpster after a busy weekend and the thick cloud of campfire smoke that lingers at bedtime when the land breeze shifts in. But hey, it’s camping.

    Warren Dunes State Park

Warren Dunes State Park is great, I went here for the sole purpose of the dog beach. Miles and miles of it! It's a beautiful park with lots of trails, lots of dunes and beach on Lake Michigan. I think it's a hidden gem for Michiganders. I prefer rustic sites and Warren Dunes has rustic sites and a modern campground. My site had a trail head leading out off the back, it was perfect. Warren Dunes has tons of trails, dunes and beaches. The best part, dog friendly off leash beach! If you travel with dogs, it's a great campground! There are water pumps and outhouse restrooms on the rustic sites. There is also a general store on the grounds should you need anything you forgot. Also, there is no alcohol allowed on the grounds.
