Martha's Vineyard Family Campground sits on forested grounds in Vineyard Haven, offering the island's primary camping option for visitors arriving by ferry. The wooded sites provide natural screening between neighbors, with most campsites surrounded on three sides by trees and shrubbery despite their proximity to one another.
Campers consistently note the facility's cleanliness standards, particularly in the restroom and shower buildings. Zack found "clean level campsite with hard sand base" during his stay. The campground maintains both indoor facilities and outdoor shower options, with several reviewers preferring the roomier outdoor showers on hot days. A camp store stocks essentials from postcards to air mattresses, and staff keep an air pump available for walk-in campers without vehicles.
The seasonal operation runs from mid-May through mid-October, accommodating RVs up to 40 feet with full hookups alongside tent sites. Family activities include a playground, game room, and community fire pit area supplementing individual fire rings at each site. During peak summer months, organized activities range from tie-dyeing sessions to weekend live music events. The island bus system stops directly at the campground entrance, connecting campers to towns across Martha's Vineyard without requiring a vehicle.
Wildlife encounters are common, particularly with skunks that have grown accustomed to human presence. Staff recommend securing food storage carefully. The campground operates under family ownership with strict quiet hours that reviewers say are consistently enforced. Ferry reservations coordinate with campsite bookings, making the island accessible for mainland visitors planning multi-day stays.
Book early for summer dates, as this remains Martha's Vineyard's sole camping facility and fills quickly during peak season.
Description
The Martha’s Vineyard Campground began as a vacant wooded lot in 1968. The land was purchased by Charles and Jeanne Feeney from a retired doctor living in Vineyard Haven. Charles “Chuck” Feeney was an aerospace engineer at the time and was always taking his kids camping. His dream was to have a place for the family to camp and call it their own. So together with his wife and five children he converted a bus into a camper and carved out a site amongst the wild blueberry bushes and scrub oak trees. Our family fell in love with the island. We discovered all the island has to offer and found it irresistible. We were the tourists of yesteryear and what attracted our family back then still exists today: beautiful beaches, fabulous fishing, quaint villages and amazing sunsets. From the rolling hills of Aquinnah to the dunes of Katama, there is no place on earth like it.
