RV campgrounds near Fairmount Heights offer several full hookup options within driving distance of Washington DC. Cherry Hill Park in College Park provides premium RV sites with 50-amp service, water, sewer connections, and level gravel pads with brick patios. Prince William Forest RV Campground features pull-through sites with water and electric hookups, though only back sites include sewer connections. Greenbelt Park Campground offers more basic accommodations with no electric hookups but includes water and sewer facilities for RVs. Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp provides big-rig friendly sites with full hookups including 50-amp service. "Cherry Hill Park may be the greatest campground we've stayed at yet! Our site was level and the full hookups all worked fine. Beside our gravel site, there was a small brick patio with cafe table and chairs in addition to the picnic table, fire ring, and grill."

Seasonal considerations affect availability throughout the region, with several parks operating year-round while others close during winter months. Most campgrounds require reservations, particularly those closest to DC attractions. Bull Run Regional Park accommodates large rigs with both pull-through and parallel back-in sites, offering a mix of water/electric and full hookup options. Camp Meade RV Park permits alcohol and fires while providing comprehensive amenities for extended stays. Cell service varies by location, with campers reporting better connectivity near College Park than at more wooded sites. Dump stations are available at most parks, though locations like Prince William Forest place them near the entrance rather than throughout the campground. Navigation can be challenging after dark at some facilities, as one camper noted: "Do not try and come in after dark. Very tight and very dark."

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

      Gambrill State Park Campground

      Great Camp Spot

This is a great camping spot. The sites aren’t too close together and the hosts are very friendly. The only reason I gave it four stars is because we are near a highway so you can hear cars throughout the night. But the crickets make up for it by being as loud as possible. With the fees, it cost $25 for a non-electric site and with access to showers after a long trek I was happy to pay.

      Redemption Springs

      Pleasant Stay and Hosts

We stayed at Redemption Springs to get relatively close to Baltimore without bringing our 30ft travel trailer into the city. Seth and the other gentlemen I spoke with were all extremely accommodating. Enjoyed learning about their approach to restorative farming and purchasing a variety of treats at the farm store. Beef, pork, chicken, seasonings, baked goods, and more. We booked on Hipcamp and recommend following his driving instructions. Our rig fit fine by tuhe main barn and they kept an eye on us going in and out to make sure we didn't have issues making any of the turns. Lots of farm life!

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

    Guide to Fairmount Heights

Camping options near Fairmount Heights, Maryland provide access to outdoor recreation while remaining close to Washington DC's urban amenities. The region features wooded sites within an hour's drive of the capital, with elevations ranging from 50 to 400 feet above sea level. Most campgrounds in this area maintain year-round or extended seasonal operations despite the mid-Atlantic climate's humidity and occasional summer thunderstorms.

    What to do

Hiking trails and nature exploration: Bull Run Regional Park offers extensive trail networks through forested areas. "Bull Run Regional Park is absolutely beautiful. So much to do and centered around many historical sites. It's a gem," notes one camper who visited this Virginia park.

Historical site visits: Prince William Forest RV Campground provides access to notable landmarks. "Prince William Forest National Park is accessible for awesome day hikes. Civil War National Parks nearby. DC just up the road. National Marine Corp Museum just around corner," reports Kenneth H.

Water activities: Lake Fairfax Park includes options for fishing and boating. "There's a water park, paddle boats, playgrounds, trails, skate park, sports fields, and the bathrooms are the nicest I've ever seen," according to Brittany V., highlighting the diverse recreational offerings.

    What campers like

Clean bathroom facilities: Bull Run Regional Park receives high marks for its restroom maintenance. "I'll go again just for the showers. Best review I can give us of the bathrooms. They're with staying again alone. Locking doors, individual stalls. Hot dog. Best camping showers I've ever had," writes Yvonne B.

Proximity to Washington DC: Greenbelt Park Campground offers convenient urban access. "This is an urban oasis. Traffic can be heard but not seen. Weekdays are pretty quiet in this campground... The American Discovery Trail (ADT) passes through the park," explains a camper named Becky.

Site privacy and layout: Smallwood State Park provides more secluded camping areas. "Sites are very well spaced out and there are only 15 in the only camp loop. There's a marina and beautiful views just a short walk away. Sites are private with most having thick foliage and trees between them," reports Laure D.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. Some sites fill quickly despite higher prices than rural alternatives.

Traffic noise considerations: Greenbelt Park Campground maintains a natural feel despite urban proximity. "There is plenty of space between camp site clusters. The park itself is safe, quiet, permitting some nice treks through the woods. The other great thing about it that you can spend entire days at the always-free Smithsonian museums and still fall asleep in the woods," explains one reviewer.

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds have terrain issues. "Caution though, the back row is steep. We were unable to get our Super C level. The rain created red clay mud so the dogs were a mess - actually became sort of comical," notes Cheryl D. about Prince William Forest RV Campground.

Military status requirements: Certain rv parks near Fairmount Heights, Maryland restrict access. "You need military credentials" to stay at Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp, according to Mike H.

    Tips for camping with families

Recreational amenities: Lake Fairfax Campground offers numerous child-friendly options. "A lot to do: mountain bike trails (horses and walking, too); wooded hikes with water along the trails (great for dogs in the summer heat), skateboard park, BMX park, Water Park near the campground, fishing, & canoeing," reports Amy B.

Educational opportunities: Historical sites provide learning experiences for children. "Our family stayed here in a cabin on a long weekend trip to DC. This campground was full of stuff to do and we didn't even get to do a lot of it. The campground had a climbing wall on one afternoon. There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt. You even get a prize when you finish," shares Bridget H. about Bull Run Regional Park.

Budget considerations: While most rv parks near Fairmount Heights cost more than rural alternatives, Greenbelt Park offers lower rates. "It is not free but very reasonable considering the area. The other great thing about it that you can spend entire days at the always-free Smithsonian museums and still fall asleep in the woods."

    Tips from RVers

Transport planning: Cherry Hill Park provides dedicated transportation services. "Plan and reserve you DC tours right at the campground. No need to drive anywhere, the tour buses pick you up at the park!" says Jason E., highlighting the convenience for motorhome travelers.

Site selection strategies: Request specific loops or areas based on needs. "Try and reserve row E if you need full hook up," advises Cheryl D. regarding Prince William Forest RV Campground.

Leveling preparation: Pack additional leveling equipment for uneven sites. "Our site was perfectly level. Most sites appeared fairly level. Sites 10-14 were our favorites and ones we'd try to get if we go again," notes a camper at Smallwood State Park, while another mentions, "My site was level and the full hookups all worked fine" at Cherry Hill Park.

Storm readiness: Heavy rain can cause drainage problems at some facilities. "The mouths of the metal culverts in our loop were bent downward from campers driving over them, which obstructed the flow. Result was lots of standing water at our campsite," reports Stuart O. from Bull Run Regional Park.
