Several RV parks surround Oxon Hill, Maryland, providing convenient access to Washington DC and Baltimore attractions. Cherry Hill Park in College Park stands out with full hookup sites featuring 30/50 amp service, level gravel pads, and brick patios with picnic tables and fire rings. This highly-rated RV resort accommodates big rigs and offers pull-through sites with ample room for tow vehicles. Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp, located in Virginia but within easy reach of Oxon Hill, provides big-rig friendly sites with 50 amp hookups and full sewer connections. Bull Run Regional Park, open year-round, features spacious pull-through sites along the main road with water and 50 amp electric service. "We stayed in one of the transient sites with 50-amp FHU. The electric worked fine and we were able to reach the sewer with our 20' hose," noted one RVer about their experience at a nearby park.

Advance reservations are essential for RV camping in this region, particularly during peak tourist seasons and fall foliage periods. Most campgrounds offer sanitary dump stations, with Cherry Hill Park and Fort Belvoir providing full sewer hookups at individual sites. Cell service varies by location but remains generally strong throughout the area, with Cherry Hill Park reporting good WiFi near the office. Prince William Forest RV Campground offers water and electric hookups with 30 amp service, though it's not considered big-rig friendly. Pet owners will find most parks accommodate dogs, with Cherry Hill Park featuring off-leash dog parks and walking trails. Some campgrounds like Cedarville State Forest operate seasonally (April to October), while others including Bull Run Regional Park remain open year-round. Road navigation can be challenging at certain parks - one reviewer noted that "some roads in the park are tight and hard to navigate with the trees and with two-way traffic."

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Burke Lake Park Campground

      Amenities good

The park is very well maintained, and the campsites have clean fire pits and cooking grills. The restrooms are clean, spacious, and well maintained, and my campsite was large enough to comfortably fit a 6-person tent and a canopy.

However, there were a few concerns during our stay. Despite the campground’s quiet hours policy starting at 10:00 PM, many campers continued to make noise well past that time. I did not notice any campground staff or maintenance personnel making rounds to enforce the quiet hours.

I also felt concerned about security. One of my neighboring campers, who was visiting from South Carolina, told me that his generator had been stolen during the night. He reported the theft to the police, and an official report was filed. Incidents like this made me feel unsafe while camping.

I recommend increasing staff or security patrols, especially during the evening and overnight hours, to enforce quiet hours and improve the safety and security of campers and their belongings. With better enforcement and security, Burke Lake Campground would provide an even better camping experience.

    Guide to Oxon Hill

Camping areas surrounding Oxon Hill, Maryland offer a mix of wooded sites, urban-adjacent locations, and riverside camping options. The region features moderate rainfall throughout the year with humid summers and mild winters. Most campgrounds operate within a 20-mile radius of the Capital Beltway, providing varying levels of tree cover and terrain.

    What to do

Military history exploration: 7 miles. At Prince William Forest RV Campground, visitors can access significant military and historical sites nearby. "Prince William Forest National Park is accessible for awesome day hikes. Civil War National Parks nearby. DC just up the road. National Marine Corp Museum just around corner," notes Kenneth H. The park's location makes it ideal for history buffs.

Fishing from dedicated piers: 0.5 miles. Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp offers riverside recreation with direct Potomac River access. "There is a pier out into the river to fish on. The outdoor recreation center has bait, snacks, and drinks," writes Jack R. The camp also provides rentals for water activities through the base outdoor recreation center.

Hiking and biking trails: Connected network. Burke Lake Park features multiple trail options with minimal elevation change. "The trail around the lake is a bit under 5 miles, but it's all trail. There is almost no elevation gain, and it is not very technically rigorous," explains Daniel P. The park combines overnight camping with extensive day-use facilities.

    What campers like

Clean, hot showers: Available at all hours. Campers consistently mention the quality of facilities at Bull Run Regional Park. "Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. The best review I can give is of the bathrooms. They're worth staying again alone. Locking doors, individual stalls. Hot dog. Best camping showers I've ever had," reports Yvonne B.

Private, wooded sites: Limited visibility between campsites. Smallwood State Park provides more secluded camping options than many area campgrounds. "The sites are well spaced, and while on the smaller side they're very private with woods between each one. Bathrooms were clean and well stocked," writes Caitlin A. The park layout supports campers seeking more isolation.

DC accessibility with outdoor amenities: Under 1 hour. Cherry Hill Park offers the most developed facilities with direct metro access. "The park is close to Washington DC and you are able to ride the metro bus right from the campground. This campground is by far one of the best I have ever stayed at," shares Jonathan B. Multiple transportation options connect campers to urban attractions.

    What you should know

Military credentials required: ID verification. Some of the most convenient campgrounds have restricted access. "This campground is aboard Fort Belvoir, a US Army base in Northern, VA. You need military credentials," explains Mike H. Civilian campers should verify requirements before attempting to book these locations.

Seasonal operation: Limited winter availability. Cedarville State Forest operates on a limited schedule. "Forested campground with fairly lengthy but level (and thus beginner friendly) hiking just a short distance away from Washington, DC. If you've forgotten anything you can pop on by the Target or Costco right outside the forest," notes moonbeans. The forest is typically open April through October.

Hidden fees: Budget accordingly. Several reviewers mention unexpected costs at regional parks. "We have found municipal campgrounds in Northern Virginia are a bit spendy for being government sponsored. There are occupancy AND transaction fees that really add up if you're only there a few nights. But the real kicker is a 2-night minimum stay. Even mid-week," warns Stuart O. about Bull Run Regional Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Train and carousel access: Additional cost. Burke Lake Park includes special attractions for children beyond standard camping. "Nice spot with plenty to do with a little one. Train, carousel, fishing," mentions Glen W. The park's design accommodates both overnight camping and day activities.

Organized activities: Scheduled events. Multiple campgrounds provide structured entertainment. "The campground had a climbing wall on one afternoon. There are miles of trails and my gkids enjoyed the nature scavenger hunt. You even get a prize when you finish. They had a campfire complete with s'mores followed by hayrides," shares Bridget H. about Bull Run Regional Park.

Urban convenience: Emergency supplies nearby. Cedarville State Forest combines natural surroundings with suburban conveniences. "Just bring your own starters and kindling (or a small hatchet/saw). Planes do occasionally fly over the area so consider bringing earplugs if you are a sensitive sleeper," suggests moonbeans. Major retailers located minutes from the campground provide forgotten essentials.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Request specific locations. When RV camping near Oxon Hill, Maryland, experienced campers recommend careful site selection. "Sites are really staggered/set back from each other so feels like you have more space. Average lot size in general, but the set back feels like you have more space. Look at the park map and try to get a site at the end of a row," advises Megan K. about Prince William Forest RV Campground.

Level site preparation: Bring equipment. Harbor View RV and Camping Resort requires additional preparation for some sites. "Gravel site pad could definitely use some maintenance and fresh material added. Had to put down boards to park our travel trailer because about a third of the pad had just turned into mud," notes Nick E. Many reviewers mention bringing leveling blocks to address uneven pads.

Dog accommodations: Designated areas. Multiple campgrounds accommodate pets with varying facilities. "Pet friendly... kinda. No veteran discounts," mentions Katia G. about Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp. Camp Meade RV Park also permits pets but with specific restrictions and designated exercise areas.
