Several tent camping options can be found within reach of Simpsonville, Maryland, with Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area offering established tent sites in a wooded setting. The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring provides walk-in tent camping with basic amenities, while the C&O Canal National Historical Park offers primitive tent camping at multiple locations along the Potomac River, including Antietam Creek Campground and Swains Lock.

Tent campsites at Patapsco Valley feature crushed stone pads with fire rings, picnic tables, and access to shower facilities. A camper noted that "the crushed stone at the sites isn't comfortable for tents, and they won't let you pitch it on the ground, so bring extra pads and alternative ways to secure the tent." Most tent camping areas in the region require campers to pack out all trash, and water availability varies by location. The C&O Canal sites typically provide fire rings and picnic tables but limited facilities, with most featuring seasonal pit toilets and iodine-treated water pumps.

Areas along the Potomac River offer tent campers direct access to water views and hiking trails. The Antietam Creek Campground provides walk-in tent sites with scenic river access, though campers should be prepared for a short hike from parking areas to reach their sites. A review mentioned that "you have to park on the road and haul all of your stuff across the field and over the fence so it's not exactly easy to get all of your equipment at the campsite." Swains Lock offers multiple tent sites with fire rings and picnic tables in a first-come, first-served arrangement. These primitive tent setups typically accommodate standard tent footprints but may become crowded during peak summer weekends. The proximity to the C&O towpath means steady daytime foot and bicycle traffic passes near many of these tent camping areas.

      Artillery Ridge Campground

Great campsite. Fire pit, picnic table, swimming pool ( not open), miniature golf course, laundromat, bathrooms, showers, dump station, gathering areas for groups, playground, and even a horse area and stalls for horses. Dog friendly. Staff was very helpful and curious.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Codorus State Park Campground

      Hurricane camping

You just can't beat a pennsylvania park. This one is not an exception. Nice clean restroom, plenty of room. Now, what cost a star. Yes, it rained like hell. When we broke camp and go dump. The dump station was overflowing with sewer. Go to the guard shack to tell them, and find another site. None there. Can I go to an unused full hookup to dump? No! I would have to pay for the site. Two hours later, we found a place to dump for $10.

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Lake Fairfax Campground

Decent campground in the middle of a urban area

Spent two nights while we saw the Avett Brothers play at Wolf Trap. Nice flat site with power. Campground was quiet and clean. The only negative is communication and signage. It took us a couple wrong turns to find our site and when we came back, after the concert around 11, the entrance gate was closed and we had to sneak in through the exit gate. Asked the next day and they said that is what campers do to access the park after 11pm.

    What to do

Hiking the Patapsco trails: Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area offers multiple trail options for hikers of varying abilities. "The hike I did was not very long but was well worth it. The trail was well marked but there was some confusion at one point on where we were supposed to go," notes one visitor. The park features waterfalls, historic structures, and scenic bridges.

River activities: Antietam Creek Campground provides direct access to the Potomac River for water recreation. A camper reports, "The Potomac is mostly flat with some 'swirlies' for experienced paddlers. I also saw some people tubing." Many sites have their own paths down to the river, though some are steep.

Nature exploration: Take advantage of the sensory trails and nature discovery centers in the area. At Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area, "There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park," according to one reviewer. What campers like

River proximity: Many campers appreciate waterfront access at several sites near Simpsonville. At Antietam Creek Campground, a visitor commented, "It is nice being on the water. I would go back. Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table and grill." These riverside locations allow for wildlife watching and water access.

Social atmosphere: Some tent camping areas near Simpsonville feature open layouts that encourage community. One camper at Antietam Creek noted, "It is nice if you're a social camper, we got to talk to many people and also got to enjoy a nearby camper playing his violin as the sun was setting."

There is a massive playground, nature play space, sensory trail, and a small nature center. There are a lot of easy, but beautiful hikes."

    What you should know

Site preparation challenges: Several campgrounds have terrain considerations for tent campers. At Patapsco Valley, "When it rains it really flushes through the grounds. We had a site on the lower end of the loop and our site was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm," reports one camper.

Walk-in requirements: Several campsites require carrying gear from parking areas. At Antietam Creek Campground, "All sites are walk-in only, which means you park on the street, cross the bridge over the C&O and towpath, and then down a little hill to your site," explains a visitor. This impacts gear planning and setup time.

Limited facilities: Many tent camping options near Simpsonville offer basic amenities only. A camper at Antietam Creek noted, "There is nowhere to leave trash, so be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles and pack everything out with you." Weather planning: Be prepared for rapid weather changes, especially in summer. A Patapsco Valley camper shared, "After the storm for the next few days we heard trees falling nearby. Where we were hiking." Pack extra tarps and rain gear during storm seasons.

Age-appropriate trails: Select hiking routes suitable for children's abilities. "Be aware that neither the hiking trails or playground are stroller friendly," warns a Patapsco Valley visitor. Many trails have uneven terrain, stream crossings, or steep sections challenging for young children.

    Tips from RVers

Limited hookup options: RV camping near Simpsonville typically means minimal hookups. At Military Park United States Naval Academy/Annapolis Naval Station Annapolis FamCamp, a visitor noted, "Military campground. Very spartan but great location. Not much to do in the campground and some long timers there. Dirt cheap." Verify electric and water connections before arrival.
