Reservations are strongly recommended at Bayou Segnette State Park Campground, particularly on weekends when the roughly 100 sites fill up fast with travelers using the park as a base for New Orleans. Sites run full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, and RVs up to 60 feet can be accommodated, though campers arriving by rig should watch for the speed bumps at the entrance, which at least one visitor reported were severe enough to crack a coach. The paved, one-way loop roads keep traffic organized. A dump station sits near the exit for convenience.
The campground carries a pronounced bayou character that reviewers consistently flag as something to prepare for rather than be surprised by. Water pools across the grounds after rain, sites can flood, and mosquitoes are relentless after dark. Humidity is a factor year-round, including in late December, when at least one camper arrived underprepared after camping in cold-weather conditions the month before. Keeping tent lights off until you're inside helps reduce insect pressure. In the early morning, rabbits move through the sites and birds are audible well before sunrise.
Facilities are well-maintained overall. Bathrooms are centrally located on each loop, showers run hot, and the laundry room is free, though it can get competitive during busy periods. Caitlin R. calls it a "very clean laundry room," and Laura M. notes "power and water at sites, and a dump station on the way out." One recurring complaint is that the bathrooms lack ventilation, leaving floors perpetually wet. Sites 81 and 84 are noted for having more privacy than most and proximity to the bathhouse.
The park sits just west of Westwego and connects to New Orleans via a ferry that some campers use to avoid driving into the city. Hurricane Ida in 2021 took down many of the surrounding trees, and as of early 2022 some of that storm damage remained visible beyond the cleared roads and walkways. Boardwalks cross through camp, offering views over the bayou without walking through wet grass. For campers who want alternatives, Marrero Travel Park and Chicot are nearby options worth checking.
Book online well in advance for festival weekends, and if arriving after hours, call ahead as the park uses a secondary entrance for late check-ins that can be difficult to navigate without directions.
