Quiet offseason, huge park close to city

Areas of the park were closed and quiet as it was the beginning of the season.

Most of the sites are uneven, but have electric and water hookups for $30 a night. Bathrooms decent.

We biked around the huge campground and there was lots to see. About 20 mins from New Orleans! We took a Lyft and enjoyed the city for a day. You can get an RTA pass online for $3 and ride public transit including the famous streetcars. A must !

Nice park

Nice sites. Sites are spaced apart giving you some room. Some decks and picnic tables need repair. Easy in and out with 31 ft class C with toad.

Good: easy in, hard top sites, good location near NOLA, very nice staff, grounds kept clean. Bad: rough road entering campground, needs work. Ugly: nothing.

Half wild, half mild

Why we booked: It was either this or a private campground that's closer to the city but an RV parking lot that costs 4x.

Campground: Run down at best. Place needs some serious love, especially the asphalt.

Quirks: It's a good little drive into the campground. It's also CRAZY dark at night, so your choices are blasting lights and blinding campers or running over a possom.

Site: Meh.

Nearby: Riding bikes around the park was pretty sweet. Saw lots of birds and a few gators. The stroll around the campground was pretty okay, as well. But as soon as you leave the park, you're fighting traffic that's fighting veteran potholes.

Value: Probably fair.

Dirty bathrooms/site

I wanted to give this place a good review but…Site was dirty with cigarette butts and the grill was not cleaned out in what looked like a long time. Fire pit was still smoldering. Bathrooms were out of toilet paper and soap. Told the receptionist at the front gate. It was still not restocked. Bathrooms were dirty and very moldy shower curtains. Looks like it was once a nice place but not anymore. Needs some updating and someone needs to take some pride in their job and at least clean and restock the bathrooms

Clean, spacious, and Humid

Nice place to spend some time. Lots of room in the campsite. Quiet, pet friendly. Clean bathrooms and showers. Playgrounds at each of the restroom buildings. Laundry is also available $1.75 each for wash and dry. Very humid- but it is New Orleans, after all. A few trails to hike. Can also launch a boat to fish. Pool was closed while we were there (July 2022). But seemed like it would be fun.

Great base for exploring NOLA

We booked this very last minute to meet family in NOLA.

The bathrooms were kept clean. The campground was nice. Getting around was a bit confusing but the lady on the phone gave very detailed instructions since we were arriving after hours. The wooden platform on our site seemed like it was on its last legs.

Our neighbor was an employee of the park and he and his wife were absolutely a treasure!

Also, coming from camping in Gatlinburg the month before (18 degrees) to here, we were not prepared for how hot and humid and full of bugs it would still be at the end of December. Lesson learned!

Easy access but then in the wilderness

The front desk staff were knowledgeable and helpful with recommendations, maps and literature. I do also suggest taking the ferry into New Orleans. The price for a site was half price for folks 62 and older. The sites were spaced out well and there was plenty of level ground for setting up. There were a few playground areas that seemed to be enjoyed by families and walking the dog on the pathways and road was pleasant. I would recommend this park to friends.

Tired facility with excellent location

We stayed here for 3 nights in a  pop-up camper, used the bathhouse. This campground can't be beat for access to New Orleans and price, but it was badly damaged in Hurricane Ida in 2021 and has not been maintained very well. The bathhouse was clean but not ventilated, so it was always wet. One temperature for showers - hot! At least it wasn't cold. And all the nice trees in the surrounding bayou are now either down or at an angle that assures they're going to die. They cleaned up the trees from walkways and roads, but nowhere else. We heard this park is the biggest moneymaker for LA, but compared to other LA parks we stayed at, they're not using the money here. Still, sites are reasonably large and level, quiet at night despite the closeness to the city, and the price can't be beat.

Conveniently Close to New Orleans

We stayed here to restock and refresh before going to Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Nice bathrooms and showers, and nice large laundry room which even had a dispenser to buy laundry soap.

Power and water at sites, and a dump station on the way out.

Garbage bins throughout campground. No recycling bins.

The campground had a very swampy feel, water pooled everywhere and I kept an eye out for alligators though I didn't see anything other than cute little tiny frogs in the laundry room and our power pedestal.

Nice campground overall though we didn't spend much time outside due to the muggy stuffy weather when we were there in late Feb.

We arrived too early to go to the site so they had us wait in the day use area where there are playgrounds and picnic areas.

Disappointed

Generally speaking, State parks have been some of the nicest places to camp and often the cheapest. This campground was very expensive, the bathrooms were not in good condition (and there was a snake in the doorway one evening). There is a laundry room but one of the machines wasn't working (out of 2) which delayed us leaving. The camp host banged on our door in the morning because we'd forgotten to put our reserved sign on the post. The park police repeatedly harassed us to leave even though we had vacated our campsite and moved into the parking area (we had been told it was no problem if we needed to do this for a few hours after check out time, and the Campground was very empty).

Urban Oasis

We live nearby so we have camped here countless times and attended many events here.  This is the first place our youngest camped, and she has asked to have multiple birthdays here.  I normally wouldn't review a state park so highly, because generally they aren't remote or secluded enough.  Yet in this case I am just genuinely glad we have this resource so close to the city.

The campsites are standard, but be cautious of water, this is a bayou after all.  We stayed in a cabin once and balked a bit at the price and the 2 day minimum, but wow.  They are more like floating condos.  They are roomy, clean and decorated much better than I expected.

In our many visits over the years we have come to know a ranger or 2.  And one thing I know is that these people care about this place alot.

Attack of the termites

We showed up to a swampy site (it’s a bayou after all) full of mosquitos. As soon as the sun went down, the termites flooded every light source. By the next day things seemed to drY up a bit and we were able to enjoy the wildlife and some great fishing. Our site was large with H2O and electricity. Our neighbors put a real damper on our stay with their 6 dogs, loud TV in the tent and fighting at all hours of the night - but that’s circumstantial.

Asphalt pad pretty level. Decent cell ATT & Verizon. OTA TV had  channels, but did't really check it out.

Highlight was Westwego Shrimp Market 2 blocks away. Great prices on fresh shrimp.

Bayou Segnette State Park, LA

Located only 15 minutes from the heart of New Orleans!! The campground is spacious and each site is separated by trees or bushes. It’s very affordable like most state parks are, which is a plus. The bathrooms and showers were heated and clean, but I did have a tree frog join me during my morning shower. The laundry room charges $1.75 per load and there is no change machine FYI. The sites flood easily due to the marshland climate so be aware of that. Our site even came with a deck which was nice. Overall we enjoyed our stay very much so!

  • very clean laundry room! Loads were $1.75
  • hot showers :)
  • stop at Joe’s Donuts for beignets :)

Cons

  • bathroom design is meh. Not sure if they have ventilation so the floor always seemed wet. Many things are starting to rust. Bathroom stalls are awkward size/position.
  • most sites don’t have privacy. Some have privacy on one side. We liked 81 and 84 for this reason and close to the bathroom’

Location and Laundry!

We stayed here to be close to New Orleans. It is still a bit of a drive into the city, but there is a ferry you can take also. You still have to drive to the ferry, but it is supposed to be closer. We didn’t use the ferry though. This is a nice state park that has pretty scenery and free laundry!! It’s a little cutthroat in the laundry room, but if you can get a machine it is pretty nice to be able to catch up on laundry for free!! The sites were level and spacious and they had trash cans at just about every site that was a nice bonus. This is our first LA state park and we are very impressed!  If you are in a RV, be careful coming in - there are some massive speed bumps!  We were ok, but our neighbor thinks he cracked his coach on one of the speed bumps.

The park is really nice, excellent sites and great amenities there’s a lot of room for bike riding. Great boat launch some of the best fishing you’ll ever find and if you go out on the boat make sure you bring some marshmallows to feed the gators. The wave pool in the summer is usually overcrowded other than that it a nice park.

NOT ALL SITES ARE EQUAL

I stayed here for two nights while visiting New Orleans. At check in I asked for a tent site and was told every site is a tent site. I arrived at the space I was assigned and there was very little grass areas and NONE FLAT. Meanwhile I look across the road at several empty sites that would have been very accommodating, lots of flat grass! Yes I should have driven back to the office, but it’s a long distance from the office and campsites and I was tired and decided to make it work. BTW I have a small backpacking tent, anything larger and I definitely would not have fit!

The second day we had a very heavy rainfall and the location I picked for my tent completely flooded. I had to drag my tent to a slightly higher very slopped spot in the rain.

Given how few tents I saw at this campground, couldn’t the registration office have a list of which sites might best accommodate a tent??
