Stone Mountain Park Campground
Welcome center is nice, but the roads and asphalt sites are crumbling. We had a back in site that was fairly level. No real privacy from neighboring sites.

Sweetwater Creek State Park Campground provides a pet-friendly environment for campers near Mableton, Georgia with five walk-in tent sites and ten yurts that welcome dogs. Most visitors note the clean facilities and well-maintained grounds make it ideal for camping with pets. The park requires dogs to remain leashed while on trails and in camping areas. Stone Mountain Park Campground also accommodates pets with options for tent camping, RV sites, cabins, and yurts. The bathhouse facilities at Sweetwater are exceptionally clean with keyed access limited to registered campers. Both parks offer picnic tables at each site, with fire rings available for evening relaxation with pets.
Hiking trails throughout Sweetwater Creek provide excellent opportunities for dog walking, with 15 miles of paths that follow alongside the creek and through wooded areas. Many trails are shaded, making them comfortable for dogs even during warmer months. The nearby Sweetwater Creek RV Reserve offers an alternative with full hookup sites for RVers traveling with pets, though reviews indicate the spaces are quite close together with limited outdoor recreation space for dogs. The park's proximity to Atlanta (about 15 miles west) makes it convenient for urban pet owners seeking weekend getaways. Wildlife sightings are common in these parks, so keeping dogs leashed helps protect both the natural environment and your pet's safety when camping at pet-friendly campgrounds in this region.
"Mother Nature is sure the baddest of them all… This place have everything from hiking trails, camping and daily picnics, it’s not over crowded to where it’s uncomfortable but it’s so still and an essence"
"There's several yurts and 5 walk-in tent sites. Yes, some of the reviews here are confusing this park with another. There's NO RV or TRAILER camping here. "

Way too many rules to have to abide by. It’s not a day use area, so you HAVE to camp over night or else they threaten to ban you from all FoCo campsites. Normally not a big deal, but there was supposed to be rain during our visit and that had me paranoid. We camped out, the rain held off, it was nice. Then day 2, I wasn’t feeling it anymore, but I didn’t want to be banned from camping 🙄 so we stayed the night and packed up at 5:45am the next day. No coffee or chilling. I just wanted to get out of there! I love camping out in the wilderness…no rules, no stress, no people, no RVs. Just nature.
Honestly it was so super easy. Just reserve a spot in the recreation.gov app, pull to the entrance camp host gate, get your paper pass after checking in, and you’re good to go! Need to book longer? Go in the app and if your site is available just make a new booking and tell the camp hosts!
This campground use to be a good hold over spot or a good spot for beginner campers. The homeless in the area have taken it over and have completely destroyed it. Trash all over the place and used needles and foils scattered about. The police routinely check this area as it has become a known hideout spot for wanted people. Would not camp here. Back when I was a kid we would ride our bikes and stay out there for days at a time. Not anymore. Would avoid
Very quiet, has porter potty in parking lot, cell service, free camping.
The webpage is hokey 1990s vintage, can’t handle multi-day reservations. I gave up out of frustration.
Beautiful quiet campground. Very well kept. Free firewood which is always a plus. Misty is fabulous. Check in and check out very easy. Nice playground d for kids, small beach area (water was low when we weee here). No shade at site 16, u less you have an awning.
Over priced in my opinion and ran down and outdated but easy to get in and out. Off the hwy and management is friendly.
35$ a night for a tent

Paddle on Lake Allatoona: McKinney Campground provides excellent lake access for water activities. It is small with just 24 spots equipped with water and electric and every spot has water access," notes Kathy B., adding that "most spots provide complete privacy from your neighbors because of all the trees."
Private waterfront camping: Payne Campground offers secluded spots on Lake Allatoona. "Our site is very private... It is nestled along the shore of Lake Allatoona. Site selection matters: At Red Top Mountain State Park Campground, choosing the right site requires research. "Heavily wooded sites that are not well maintained. Very narrow roads in the campground with lots of pot holes. Not the easiest state park to pull a travel trailer in. Sites were very narrow," warns Brock D.
Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience ambient noise despite natural settings. "This park is about 30-40 minutes outside of Atlanta right off of I-75. If you are in a tent... you will hear I-75 traffic all night so keep in mind, that while it looks like country, you are not deep in nature," notes Jeff E., who mentioned a "train that blows its whistle" several times nightly.

Electric options: Many parks offer varying electric hookups. Red Top Mountain State Park provides "15/30/50A power and water hookups" although campers should note there is "no septic hookup at these campgrounds" according to Matt H., who appreciated that sites were "fairly level."
Layout considerations: For RV travelers seeking pet-friendly campgrounds near Mableton, site configuration matters. "The water pressure was good at around 55 psi...
