Panola Mountain State Park Campground

Accessible via a three-quarter-mile walk-in trail, this Georgia state park campground sits around a small pond with limited tree cover. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources manages the facility, which accepts reservations and allows pets. Campers reach the sites by parking at a designated area and hiking in with their gear.

The campground provides a basic camping experience with primitive sites positioned near the water. Cell service works well here, with T-Mobile users reporting good reception throughout the area. Wildlife activity includes active coyote packs that create nighttime sounds. "Not many trees around and no commodities," notes Jessica D., describing the open layout and lack of facilities.

Fishing opportunities exist at the pond, while hiking and biking trails connect to the broader park system. However, reaching most trail systems requires driving to different access points rather than walking directly from camp. The location provides quick access to urban areas while maintaining a backcountry feel through the walk-in requirement.

For additional camping choices in the region, campers can explore places to camp near Panola Mountain State Park. Nearby alternatives include Atlanta Glamping and The Oasis at Stonecrest. The walk-in format appeals to those wanting a buffer from vehicle traffic while staying close to metro Atlanta.

Visitors often highlighted the peaceful primitive camping experience and excellent staff service. The walk-in sites around a pond offer good cell reception but limited amenities and tree coverage.

Everything as promised

We did an overnighter to check this out after doing a separate hike on the primary trails from the other side of the park in the morning.

Getting to the campsite was simple enough and it is the quoted 3/4 mile walk in. It was great to see some families utilizing the space. There is good cell reception (T-Mobile)

Very peaceful and even had the sounds of a vibrant coyote pack.

Open space near pond

Just a few campsites around a pond. Not many trees around and no commodities. Close to a few hiking places but you have to drive to get to them. Close to the city as well.
