Backcountry and primitive camping options around Munford sit at the foothills of Talladega National Forest where elevations range from 500 to 2,400 feet. The area contains several creeks and small waterfalls that create natural swimming holes during warmer months. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing at higher elevations, particularly at Cheaha State Park which marks Alabama's highest point.
What to do
Hike to plane wreckage: On the trail to McDill Point Backcountry Campground, hikers can discover debris from a 1972 plane crash. "Just past McDill, there is a side trail that takes you to debris from a 1972 plane crash site," notes Nancy C.
Gem mining for kids: Located near the lake at Cheaha, this activity provides entertainment for families. "Right across from the store they have a gem mining area that is also great fun for the children," shares Bethany M. from her experiences at the park.
Short waterfall hikes: Multiple easy trails lead to accessible waterfalls. "The short hike to the gorgeous falls is perfect for the kids. While you can continue on for miles if you wish, we prefer to stay at the water and climb the little falls," says Bethany M. about Talladega National Forest Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area.
Climb boulder trails: Several paths feature large rock formations for adventurous hikers. "Right by the lake is a trailhead that leads up to more amazing views. It a fun hike climbing over huge boulders for much of the way. The kids enjoy this too," according to Bethany M.
What campers like
Privacy in backcountry sites: More secluded camping spots exist if you're willing to hike farther. "This set of sites is a group that is further off the trail from the main Cheaha Falls camping area. You can keep going further up the creek to find additional sites," explains Asher K. about Cheaha Falls Private Backcountry Campsite.
Reliable fire pits: Many primitive sites include established fire rings. "The site we stayed at is in the area of Cheaha falls but is behind a couple of other campsites in its own secluded area. You just follow the river upstream to get there. The site is fairly large and big enough for a couple of tents with nice flat cleared out ground," writes Asher K.
Disconnecting from technology: Limited cellular coverage creates opportunities for true nature immersion. "No wifi or cell service; but we loved being disconnected. Recommend starting at Cheaha Trailhead and catch Cave Creek Trail to Pinhoti back to the parking lot... views are amazing," reports Emily C. from her stay at Pinhoti Trail Backcountry Campground.
Seasonal water access: Spring brings higher creek levels suitable for filling water bottles. "We would definitely suggest visiting in springtime since everything is magical when the plants are blooming and all the wildlife is out and exploring," notes Asher K.
What you should know
Water availability varies: Many backcountry sites lack reliable water sources during drier seasons. "One of the major things to be aware of though is that this site has no water access any time of year (unless it is actively raining) so make sure to carry in any water you will need," warns Asher K. about Pinhoti Trail.
Trail markings can be confusing: Some paths become difficult to follow when covered with fallen leaves. "Great trail, well kept up. Not very rocky or mountainous. Parking available near the railroad tracks. Backcountry camping sites and fire pits available along the trail and not commonly traversed," writes Nicolas B.
Recreation area seasonal closures: Check opening dates before planning trips. "The one major caution is to check the seasons that the site is open since it was locked up when we were there. We ended up parking at the gate and walking down the road a mile where we met up with friends who had hiked in from a different area," advises Asher K. about Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area.
Dog-friendly boardwalks: Cheaha State Park offers accessible viewing areas for those with pets. "The kids love the lake and the pool, and there is an easy walk on a boardwalk with amazing views at the end on days when the kids don't feel like hiking," shares Bethany M.
Tips for camping with families
Tent site selection: Choose locations near bathhouses when possible. "The sites for tents are very close to the road (except for the ones near the bath house! I'm getting one of those next time! 5,6)," recommends Jenni O. about camping with children at Cheaha State Park.
Hidden rocks in grass sites: Be cautious when setting up tents on seemingly smooth areas. "Some have rock beds, some have grass beds (but there are hidden big rocks in the grass making it hard to find a good smooth spot)," warns Jenni O.
Swimming platforms for older kids: Lake areas offer structures for water play. "Our first excursion was the lake. Very nice! Beach was clean with plenty of space. Park was there too. My kids loved the diving platform," shares George's F. about their experience.
Early morning lake visits: Less crowded water access improves family experiences. "We hit the lake again early the next morning. Hiked 3 trails with excellent views. All easy and enjoyable for all 3 of my kiddos, ages 6, 11 and 12," notes George's F.
Tips from RVers
Dog parks for pet relief: GrandStand RV Park offers dedicated spaces for pets. "Grandstand RV Park loves animals so be sure to bring all your fur babies. Double dog park open all hours and free treats available too!" notes Morgan about this dog-friendly campground near Munford.
Hookup options: Several campgrounds provide full connections for extended stays. "Stayed here one night while traveling west from SC to Texas. Host was very nice and drove by to check on things once I was setup. Pad was level with full hook ups," shares PJ M.
Drive-in accessibility: Many sites accommodate larger rigs without unhooking tow vehicles. "We are 43ft with tow vehicle and didn't have to unhook. Sites are large. Easy to get in. Nothing fancy," reports Kathy H. about Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground.
RV site spacing: Private areas between vehicles enhance camping experience. "Host was very nice and drove by to check on things once I was setup. Pad was level with full hook ups," shares PJ M.
