    Douglas Forest RV Resort

    Awesome Campground In The Forest

We had an incredible stay at Douglas Forest RV Resort! From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how peaceful and well-maintained everything was. The RV sites are spacious and easy to navigate, with full hookups and strong Wi-Fi— a big plus for us since we work remotely on the road. What really sets this place apart is the location. You’re literally steps away from Douglas State Forest, which made morning hikes and evening strolls absolutely magical. It’s pet-friendly too, and our dog loved the wooded trails and open areas. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the camp store had everything we needed. Even though the recreation area is still being built, the amenities already in place more than made up for it. We’re already planning our next trip for summer when the pool opens! If you’re looking for a relaxing spot that blends nature with convenience, look no further. Douglas Forest RV Resort is a true hidden gem!

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

    Aces High RV Park

    Peaceful

Well organized campground with both water front back in sites as well as large pull throughs. Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it. It was a quiet area with ponds and creeks and a generally relaxing setting. It has a clean playground and well maintained pool as well as some walking paths, large grassy areas, pavilion and volleyball court. All sites but one (#67) are full hook up. Some seasonal sites but all were tasteful and not trashy looking. We enjoyed the shade trees on our site (#3) and noticed many sites had similar trees, but the owner keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site. There is also a creek area for dog swimming. Our two labs loved it! Local kayaking areas and about 30 min to Foxwoods Casino, even closer to Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium are also not too far. Nearby (5min drive) is also a fun looking place for mini golf. Will definitely be back!

Guide to Windsor Locks

Camping options near Windsor Locks, Connecticut, extend throughout the central New England region with elevations ranging from 100 to 1,200 feet across various campgrounds. The area experiences humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, creating camping conditions that vary significantly from May through October. Most RV parks in the region handle moderate-sized units with some accommodating rigs up to 40 feet in length.

What to do

Fishing access at Rudd Pond: At Rudd Pond Area — Taconic State Park, visitors can catch largemouth bass from shore or by boat. "There is plenty of fishing access from shore and you can rent a boat for the whole day to fish on the water," notes Rosie R., who caught "2 decent-sized largemouth bass" during her stay.

Hiking trails and wildlife management areas: Multiple trail systems surround the RV camping options near Windsor Locks. "Had we had more time I would have ventured into the adjacent wildlife management areas as well," mentions Becca A. about her experience at Camp Coldbrook. At Taconic State Park, "There's a trailhead at the end of the campground that connects to the other trails in Taconic State Park," reports Katherine P.

Golf opportunities: Some campgrounds offer on-site recreation beyond typical camping activities. Though experiences vary, several RV parks feature golf amenities. Just be aware that maintenance quality fluctuates between locations.

What campers like

Spacious pull-through sites: At Aces High RV Park, campers appreciate the well-designed sites. "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," explains April L., who stayed at this East Lyme location.

Family-friendly activities: Prospect Mountain Campground and RV Park offers numerous amenities for families. "They have activities every weekend such as dances, bingo, hayrides. They also have a great pool, playground and pond for fishing. They also have a nice little store and snack bar. There is also a mini golf course and a mining area where kids can 'mine' 'gems'," reports Sandra S.

Natural water features: Many campgrounds near Windsor Locks feature ponds or lakes. "Beautiful pond and natural setting with lots of ducks, geese, chickens, and wild birds," notes Matt S. from Aces High RV Park. At Prospect Mountain, campers enjoy "a great pool, playground and pond for fishing," with waterfront sites available.

What you should know

Seasonal campground schedules: Operating dates vary significantly across the region. Most campgrounds open from early May through mid-October, with some extending slightly longer. At Countryside RV Park in Griswold, the season runs "May 1 to Oct 15," providing a typical window for camping in the area.

Cell service and connectivity challenges: Internet access varies widely between campgrounds. At Sturbridge RV Resort, one visitor noted connectivity issues: "First main issue was how bad the cell reception is. Normally, I'd say that's a perk for camping but we're full-timers and work on the road so it is important for us."

Site leveling requirements: Terrain at some campgrounds requires preparation for leveling RVs. Some locations feature concrete pads while others have more natural surfaces requiring blocks or levelers.

Tips for camping with families

Look for dedicated children's activities: Several campgrounds organize regular events specifically for children. "Very friendly and a great place for kids. Nice pool with time for adult only swim time," reports Gale S. about Prospect Mountain Campground, highlighting the balance between family and adult amenities.

Consider playground quality and location: When selecting a campground for family trips, evaluate playground offerings. "The playground was a hit for our kids!" shares alissa T. about her stay at Sturbridge RV Resort, indicating the importance of this amenity for younger campers.

Evaluate swimming options: Water features provide important recreation for families. At Douglas Forest RV Resort, "The pool is well-maintained and enjoyable," according to one reviewer, though they note that "the playground equipment shows its age."

Tips from RVers

Check electrical systems before booking: Some campgrounds have reported electrical issues. At one location, a reviewer warned about "electrical system needs" and "power fluctuations...during warm weather, causing frequent breaker trips." Consider bringing a surge protector for equipment safety.

Confirm site dimensions for larger rigs: While many campgrounds advertise big-rig friendly sites, actual conditions vary. Some RV parks have tight turns or low-hanging branches that can challenge larger vehicles. At Aces High RV Park, the owner "keeps them trimmed to not interfere when parking on your site," making navigation easier.

Verify bathroom and shower facilities: Bathroom quality and maintenance schedules differ significantly between campgrounds. "The bathrooms were clean and showers had nice hot water if you wanted it. No coin operation here!" reports Becca A. about Camp Coldbrook, highlighting an important amenity for RVers who prefer not to use onboard facilities.
