Several RV parks sit within 30 miles of Cobalt, Connecticut, offering full hookup options for motorhome travelers. Aces High RV Park in East Lyme features big-rig friendly sites with level concrete pads and patios, complete with 50-amp electrical service and sewer connections. Road access to most RV parks is straightforward, though some visitors report narrow entrance roads that require careful navigation with larger rigs. Winter camping options are limited, as most parks close between mid-October and early April, with Ashaway RV Resort in nearby Rhode Island being one of the few year-round exceptions.

    Mystic KOA

Great campground for coastal CT & RI

We stayed at Mystic KOA in North Stonington, Connecticut, to be tourists in Mystic. Spoiler alert… we had a great stay!

This campground is just 15-minutes from Mystic and about an hour’s drive to Newport, Rhode Island. It’s just a few minutes from I-95 and so close to Mystic Aquarium, downtown Mystic, Mystic Seaport, and all the local spots.

It’s a well-maintained campground with 2 pools(though the larger one was closed for maintenance during our stay), lots of play areas and daily activities for little ones, and a cool“pub truck” for adult drinks. Our site(#408) was about 85’ long with plenty of room for our 45’ motorhome and toad(and then some!). It was level and gravel with a nice fire ring and picnic table. The hookups worked fine with 50-amp electric and decent water pressure. Cable TV had nearly 50-channels, but the wi-fi didn’t quite reach our part of the park.

Due to a family issue, we needed to leave about a day-and-a-half early. We called the office as a courtesy to let them know as we were pulling out and received a partial credit for a night’s stay on our credit card. Didn’t even ask, they just did it. Thanks Mystic KOA!

We’ll definitely be back. This is a great place to stay when visiting the coastal Connecticut/Rhode Island area.

    Indian Island County Park

    Great location, beautiful views

Wonderful weekend visit in the off season. Site was level, pretty spacious and easy to back into. Campsites are located close enough to the beach/marsh. Multiple playgrounds for the kids although they were closed due to Covid. No sewers sites that I could tell, and water was off because we were a week shy of the season opening. Needed to move to dump station prior to leaving (2 night visit) and had to drive to fill the fresh water tank once while there. Nice neighbors. Dog friendly. People obeyed the quiet hours. I have not one complaint. There were hiking trails and geocaching on site. 4 stars bc no sewer at the campsite and we like full hook ups and honestly I’m guessing this is a county rule but the playgrounds could’ve been open. Outside and socially distanced after dealing with Covid for a whole year and most local parks and playgrounds being open since last May... that was upsetting. All in all we had a great weekend. Close to the LI aquarium as well! Many stores and a golf course near by too!

    Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Sturbridge - [CLOSED}

    Pine lake , Sturbridge Ma.

I’m told that this used to be Jellystone.

It’s now called Pine Lake Rv and cottages.

Not knowing what the previous campground was like I can’t compare. But the new owners surely did a total revamp. There is approximately 30 cottages and many pull through and back in sites for any size RV.

The bathroom/showers were all new and very nice and clean. It seems to be very family friendly. There’s an 8 acre lake with kayaks and fishing, a basketball court,   a game pavilion and a well stocked store. The RV sites are   spacious and pretty close to near perfect level.

The problems I came across was there were very few places to dispose of camp trash, I had to actually walk around looking for one. The camp store doesn’t open until 9:00AM and closes at 4:00PM

If you can, try and NOT stay on the back upper level ( the 700 ) spots. It’s around 100 feet from a very busy road and loud !

    Wawaloam Campground

    Family friendly, great campstore, quiet

We stayed here from a Tuesday to Thursday with our 21ft travel trailer & our dog. We had site 50. It was private, a great size & has water/electric. We had good cover on our site & the area our site was in was super quiet. There are both seasonal and regular sites on this campground. The camp store has everything you might need. The front gate staff are friendly and helpful. There seemed to be lots of activities on the weekends & it's definitely a family friendly/kid friendly spot. Dog friendly too! Lots of other campers had their dogs w them. We used this as our home base to visit Newport, which is about 35 min from the campground.

    Wolf's Den Family Campground

    Perfect location central in Connecticut

This place is off Route 9 in Connecticut on the east side of the Connecticut River (major RT 9 highway is on west side). You need to cross the river via bridge to Goodspeed Opera house and past to get to the RV campground. Nearby attractions are Gillette Castle and Goodspeed Opera. The campground itself is realy nice. Cable TV at most sites. Only electric 30 or 50A, and water; but there are a few dumpstations around in the camp. Very peaceful. There are activities on Friday and Saturday (like Bingo). Great store with extended hours. The camp staff will help you with anything. Really long or tall RV will need to stay close to the front of the campground, as typical older campground is not designed for 40 foot long or 10 foot high campers.

Guide to Cobalt

RV camping near Cobalt, Connecticut provides access to several campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. Located in the Connecticut River Valley at around 500 feet elevation, the area experiences warm summers with high humidity and cold winters with moderate snowfall. Most local campgrounds operate seasonally between April and mid-October, with limited winter camping options in the region.

What to do

Explore historic attractions: Campers staying at Lake Compounce Campground can visit the adjacent amusement park. "This is attached to an amusement park but far enough away not to be a bother," notes one visitor. The park offers full-day entertainment within walking distance of your site.

Visit state parks: Several state parks are accessible from Salem Farms Campground, located just 20 miles from Cobalt. "Devils Hopyard and Gillette Castle are close and Rocky Neck State Park is about a 25 minute ride," explains a camper. These parks offer hiking trails, historic sites, and swimming opportunities.

Water activities: Many campgrounds feature ponds or lakes for recreation. At Thousand Trails Sturbridge, visitors enjoy "a cool pond for paddle boats and canoeing!" The campground offers rental equipment for water activities during summer months.

What campers like

Pool facilities: Many campgrounds maintain swimming pools as alternatives to natural water bodies. At Salem Farms, one visitor appreciated "how close it was for the kids to use the pool and facilities. Everything was clean and well kept." Pools typically operate between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Campsite configuration: Aces High RV Park receives praise for thoughtful site layouts. "Pull through sites also have lots of space between them so you don't feel like you are on top of the neighbors. Sites and roads are a pea gravel material and each site has large grassy areas around it," notes a camper. The park accommodates RVs of various sizes.

Natural surroundings: Wooded campsites provide privacy and shade at several campgrounds. "Great camping out in the woods of Salem CT," mentions a Salem Farms visitor. Many campgrounds balance natural settings with convenient access to town amenities.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the region close for winter. Lake Compounce operates from "May 1 - Oct 31," while Salem Farms runs from "May 1 to Columbus Day." Plan accordingly if camping during shoulder seasons.

Site privacy varies: Proximity to neighbors differs significantly between campgrounds. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, campers note the buddy sites configuration: "I like this configuration when camping with friends but would not like this site if we did not know our neighbors."

Bathroom facilities: Cleanliness and availability of restrooms vary by location. At Lake Compounce, visitors note "few showers for number of campsites, but very clean." During peak season, expect bathroom facilities to be busier, especially on weekends.

Tips for camping with families

Activity options: Campgrounds offer varying recreation for children. At Salem Farms, a family camper shared: "We felt safe allowing the kids to go ride bikes and go mini golfing. We will definitely be back next year!" Most campgrounds provide activity schedules during summer months.

Swimming access: Pools provide supervised swimming options. "My kids enjoyed playing tennis & swimming in the pool at the campground - there is also mini-golf, but we didn't get the chance to play," notes a visitor at Ashaway RV Resort.

Playground quality: Children's play areas vary significantly between campgrounds. Lake Compounce has "a small playground, activities, tennis court, basketball," according to a visitor, though they also noted tent sites were "small and close together."

Tips from RVers

Utilities and connections: RV hookup quality varies across campgrounds. At Sun Outdoors Mystic, a camper reported: "Our site didn't have sewer, but the electric and water were working fine. We saw maintenance people making repairs while we were there."

Site dimensions: Larger RVs require specific site considerations. Countryside RV Park accommodates bigger rigs with full hookup sites featuring both 30 and 50-amp service. Its proximity to I-395 makes it easily accessible for large vehicles.

Seasonal accommodations: Winter RV camping options are limited, with Ashaway RV Resort in nearby Rhode Island being one of the few year-round options within driving distance of Cobalt.
