Plan ahead

We rolled in just at dusk. Campground sign said FULL. So we pulled down the road and stayed the night in a parking lot for hiking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reserve a spot at Amphitheater Campground in Ouray?

Amphitheater Campground in Ouray operates primarily on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons, so arriving early is recommended. If you arrive at dusk, you might find the campground already full. For the most current reservation information and potential changes to the reservation system, contact the Uncompahgre National Forest office directly. Some campers opt to have a backup plan for overflow parking or alternative camping if the main campground is full.

What hiking trails and attractions are near Amphitheater Campground in Ouray?

The area around Amphitheater Campground offers excellent outdoor adventure opportunities. A notable hiking option is the trail up County Road towards the Portland Mine, which provides spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The campground's location near Ouray gives access to numerous other trails in the San Juan Mountains. Ouray itself, known as the "Switzerland of America," features hot springs, historic downtown, and jeeping trails. The campground's elevated position also offers beautiful vistas of the town and surrounding peaks, making it a scenic base for exploring the region.

How does Amphitheater Campground compare to other Ouray campgrounds like Thistledown?

Amphitheater Campground stands out for its stunning scenic location and proximity to hiking trails, particularly the route to Portland Mine. It tends to be very popular and fills up quickly due to its beautiful setting. Unlike some private campgrounds in the Ouray area that might offer more amenities, Amphitheater provides a more rustic, natural camping experience. The campground's popularity means it can be busier than some alternatives, but many campers feel the gorgeous surroundings justify the competition for spots. For those seeking more amenities or guaranteed reservations, private options like Thistledown might be preferable, while Amphitheater appeals to those prioritizing natural beauty and trail access.

What amenities and facilities are available at Amphitheater Campground?

Amphitheater Campground offers basic facilities for campers. While specific amenity details should be verified with the Forest Service, the campground typically provides standard national forest campground features like vault toilets and designated campsites. The campground's main appeal is its gorgeous natural setting rather than extensive facilities. Water availability may be limited, so campers should plan to bring their own supply. The site's natural beauty compensates for its simple amenities, making it popular despite not being a full-service campground.
